  • Patent number: 5105694
Abstract: A machine tool has a main slide movable along a first path and a cross-slide assembly movable perpendicular to the path of the main slide. The cross-slide assembly has a first slide unit which is directly driven by a primary servo control. The cross-slide assembly has a second slide unit driven by the first slide unit through a spring-loaded follower acting against a cam which can transmit numerically-controlled offset to the second slide unit such that both slide units will follow identical paths. The cam is adjustable to enable correction of the offset. Each slide unit carries a cutting tool. The invention is applicable to multiple spindle machines having two or more spindles.

  • Patent number: 5101699
Abstract: A light-weight, highly rigid tool slide for a machine tool is provided which may be machined with a high degree of precision, whereby lateral play or "wobble" of the tool is reduced. The tool slide comprises an elongated slide member slidingly carried in a substantially cylindrical channel formed in the surface of a base member. A cover member covers both the channel and the slide member, which has a flat surface machined therein so as to conform to the shape of the covered channel. The channel in the base member may include an enlarged middle portion to reduce surface contact with the slide member and to provide space for lubricating material. A through-bore may be formed in the slide member to reduce its weight. An encoder monitors the rotational angle of a workpiece and drives a numerical controller and servomotor to move a cutting tool inward and outward in synchronism with the rotation of the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5074720
Abstract: A cutting insert for chip forming machining of metal workpieces, especially for milling, has an upper face, a lower face and edge faces intersecting the upper face to form cutting edges. A chip upsetting face extends inwardly from the cutting edge and a concavely curved chip face extends inwardly from the chip upsetting face to form a transition edge therewith. The upper face is provided with a number of depressions which are spaced apart along the transition edge. The depressions intersect the transition edge and extend inwardly therefrom. The depression extend non-perpendicularly relative to the cutting edge to form an acute angle with a line perpendicular to the cutting edge. The acute angle is in the range of 5 to 45 degrees. During a cutting action in the depressions cause runners to be formed on the chip bottom, and the runners tend to climb up the sides of the depressions.

  • Patent number: 5074176
Abstract: A rotatable chuck for supporting a plastic coated workpiece in a power driven threading machine is disclosed comprising workpiece engaging jaws mounted on the machine spindle for rotation therewith and for pivotal movement relative thereto radially inwardly and outwardly of the spindle axis. Each jaw pivotally supports an insert holder provided with a pair of inserts for engaging the outer surface of the workpiece. Each of the insert holders pivotally supports a centering link associated with an adjacent jaw so as to be actuated in response to pivotal displacement of the jaws radially inwardly of the spindle axis to control the attitude of the insert holders so that the inserts are directed radially inwardly of the spindle axis to assure a uniform gripping action by the two inserts of each holder upon engagement with the workpiece. The centering links also displace the workpiece to a centered position coaxial with the spindle axis during inward displacement of the jaws.

  • Patent number: 5062742
Abstract: A shaper cutter includes a body having teeth formed around its periphery and further includes a thin wafer disposed against a conical face of the body and formed with peripheral cutting teeth which lie against the teeth of the body, the teeth of the wafer serving to cut a workpiece and being backed by the teeth of the body. As the wafer is clamped to the body, it is flexed from a flat condition to a deflected condition in which the wafer lies against and conforms to the conical face of the body. To hold the deflected wafer in a rigidly fixed angular position on the body, a pin which is anchored to the body projects into a hole in the wafer.
