  • Patent number: 6470812
Abstract: Method and apparatus to recover energy from waste by means of combustion of such waste in industrial furnaces, particularly of the rotary type, that has an external calciner, feeding such waste into the tertiary air duct of the calciner and burning the waste inside the duct itself, to efficiently make use of the energy produced by such combustion, as a contribution of the total cost of fuel necessary to operate the industrial furnace. The method and apparatus permit the elimination of hazardous wastes that are efficiently disassociated when burned sufficiently to produce effluents that are typically non-toxic, producing greatly reduced or even no atmospheric pollution nor environmental damage.

  • Patent number: 6470593
Abstract: The present invention relates to an ejector device for vacuum drying having at least first and second passages for connecting a first chamber with a second chamber, wherein the chambers are arranged substantially at right angles with respect to each other, and the ejector is adapted to vacuum dry the inside of the second chamber by means of high speed air flow toward the first chamber. The flow toward the first chamber preferably travels through the second passage from the first passage, on the side opposite the first chamber, to induce a negative pressure in the first passage. This way, the change in kinetic energy draws the stagnant air and steam existing in the second chamber into the inside of the first chamber.

  • Patent number: 6463864
Abstract: A gasification and melting furnace for wastes has a vertically movable furnace center lance disposed along the axis of the furnace and adapted to blow off a combustion sustaining gas downward into the furnace. One or more stages of upper tuyeres are disposed so that the angle at which the combustion sustaining gas is blown off into the furnace is displaced from the furnace axis direction, and one or more stages of lower tuyeres projected into the furnace so as to blow off a combustion sustaining gas or both combustion sustaining gas and fuel toward the furnace axis. Formation of a low temperature region in the furnace are prevented and a fire spot is concentrated on the combustion of wastes. As a result, molten slag and various metals, as well as an energy gas, which are high in added value, can be recovered stably.

  • Patent number: 6457425
Abstract: A system for combustion and removal of residual carbon within fly ash particles in which the fly ash particles are fed into a particulate bed within a reactor chamber. The fly ash particles are subjected to heat and motive air such that as the fly ash particles pass through the particulate bed, they are heated to a sufficient temperature to cause the combustion of the residual carbon within the particles. The fly ash particles thereafter are conveyed in a dilute phase for further combustion through the reactor chamber away from the particulate bed and exhausted to an ash capture. The fly ash is then separated from the exhaust air that conveys the ash in its dilute phase with the air being further exhausted and the captured fly ash particles being fed to a feed accumulator for re-injection to the reactor chamber or discharge for further processing.

  • Patent number: 6453830
Abstract: Nitrogen oxides, NOx, resulting from the excess air combustion of solid fuels in a combustor or burner in a furnace are reduced. By introducing sufficient additional fuel to the combustion gases in the furnace downstream of the primary combustion zone, a fuel rich gas zone is created in a temperature range that favors the conversion of NOx to nitrogen, N2. Further downstream sufficient additional air is added to complete the combustion of any unburned fuel. Alternatively, the fuel rich gas zone can be confined to a central region of the furnace. In that case, final combustion takes place when the fuel rich gas mixes with the untreated gas further downstream in the furnace. The preferred embodiment of this invention is to introduce the additional fuel in said downstream combustion zone as solid particles dispersed in aqueous droplets of varying size that vaporize throughout the furnace gas zone being treated. The dispersed solid fuel particles burn as they evolve from the droplets.

  • Patent number: 6446357
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the drying cycle of a dryer by utilizing fuzzy logic control. Control is accomplished by first monitoring the moisture level of a clothes load in the dryer. From the monitored moisture information, variables such as the elapsed time from the start of the drying cycle to a point when no significant moisture is detected for a specified time period and the number of times higher moisture registrations occur during another specified time period are determined. Based on the determined variables, fuzzy logic is used to determine characteristics particular to the clothes load being dried, such as size of the load. Using the determined characteristics in conjunction with user settings more accurate control of the time of drying heat application, reduced drying heat application and cool down time can be accomplished.

  • Patent number: 6443077
Abstract: The system for producing combustion ash of cellulose-containing wastes, provided with a kneading device 3 for kneading cellulose-containing wastes with a prescribed amount of liquid fuel oil, a molding device 5 for molding said kneaded mixture, and a combustion furnace 7 for burning said moldings, is characterized in that the humidity conditioning furnace 6 for adjusting the water content of said moldings is arranged between said molding device and said combustion furnace. Since the water content of said moldings is adjusted by the humidity conditioning furnace at the time of burning said moldings, the organic substances (cellulose or the like) are burned almost perfectly. Consequently, the present invention has the advantage of being able to produce combustion ash of good quality without generating such combustion residue as graphite and black smoke.
