  • Patent number: 4345637
Abstract: Die castings are made from metal compositions that are fully liquid or as a preferred embodiment contain between about 10 and 85 weight percent degenerate dendrites. The composition is injected into the cavity of a die at a mean die temperature which is as near to ambient temperature as possible and usually less than about 400.degree. F. The die is formed of a material having a thermal diffusivity of at least about 0.5 cm.sup.2 /sec. The castings are ejected and the die surface is sprayed with a liquid to bring the die surface temperature back to the mean die temperature or below in the shortest possible time. The time between injection and ejection is less than about 1 minute and the time between ejection and spraying is less than about 30 seconds.

  • Patent number: 4345638
Abstract: A foundry molding machine of the horizontal stack type such as shown in Hatch U.S. Pat. No. 3,958,621 employs a programmable solid state electrical control system operating in conjunction with a closed-loop hydraulic servo-system to obtain greater flexibility of set-up and higher mold uniformity and precision with fewer reject molds. Each of four of the major moving components of the machine may be provided with an encoder or position, velocity and direction monitoring device, such components being the two opposed squeeze rams, the mold traction device, and the pusher. Such monitors not only measure the final position of one squeeze ram, but also enable the calculation or measurement of the mold thickness so that the pusher cylinder can be controlled during its movement to contact a formed cake at a null condition and to move that cake into contact also at a null condition with a horizontally formed stack.

  • Patent number: 4342609
Abstract: A method is described reducing remaining tensions and corrosion resistance in welded joints by explosion finishing thereof, comprising disposing over the axis of the weld seam an explosive charge in the form of a periodic curve, the axis of which is substantially co-extensive with that of the weld seam with the amplitude thereof extending from one side of said seam to the other, and then detonating said explosive charge. In one embodiment an auxiliary explosure charge is disposed substantially linearly over the axis of the weld seam to assure complete detonation of the charge disposed in the form of a periodic curve and comprising the main charge, and then both charges are simultaneously detonated.

  • Patent number: 4341259
Abstract: A method for controlling a casting and rolling mill by measuring the speed of a cast strip between the casting machine and the first following rolling mill and regulating the speed of the casting machine directly proportional to the measured speed of the cast strip. It is thus possible to avoid auxiliary equipment required in prior art systems such as pinch rolls and a continuous furnace between the casting machine and the first following rolling mill. Furthermore no loop on the cast strip is required. As a result, great reductions in capital expenditures, the energy required to operate the line and the necessary space can be obtained.

  • Patent number: 4341257
Abstract: In order to be able to locate stuck rollers of a roller way as early as possible, with longer operational interruptions being avoided and the demounting of constructional parts of the roller way being not necessary, an arrangement for this purpose includes a supporting body which is movable along the roller way and carries a frictional head. The frictional head is pressable against the surface areas of subsequently arranged rollers. Means are provided for recording and measuring a difference between the velocity of the supporting body with which the latter is moved along the roller way and the velocity of the frictional head getting into contact with a roller.

  • Patent number: 4338764
Abstract: The disclosure is of a novel closure for air evacuated tubular containers and comprises a tubular body having flexible, elastic sidewalls, an open end, a closed end formed by a cannula-pierceable, flexible, elastic end wall having a concavo-convex configuration in cross-section and a flange disposed radially about the periphery of the open end. The novel closure structure takes advantage of the vacuum force in the container to maintain a gas-proof, hermetic seal, reduces the thickness required of the closure to maintain the hermetic seal and is easier to assemble in an air evacuated container. The disclosure is also of a novel method of assembling the closure of the invention in an air evacuated tubular container.

  • Patent number: 4330026
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling an injection process in cold-chamber die-casting machines which work on a three-phase system whereby an automatic initiation of the third phase without delay is possible. Beginning with the plunger of the apparatus in a certain starting position, the time is measured which elapses until a pressure in a working cylinder ahead of the plunger has reached a predetermined value. The time delay of the valve system which releases the pressure medium feed in the third phase is subtracted from the time measured so as to arrive at a time differential. At the end of the time differential, which elapses when the injection process begins with the plunger in its original or starting position, serves as a starting signal to trigger the valve system.

  • Patent number: 4330024
Abstract: The specification describes a method and apparatus for deoxidizing steel. Molten steel is tapped into a ladle in which a preliminary deoxidizer of ferrosilicon or the like is added. From the ladle, the molten steel is poured into a runner which is interconnected with a plurality of molds and a deoxidizer chamber. The molten steel flows toward the molds through the deoxidizer chamber dissolving a final deoxidizer. The final deoxidizer is aluminum or a mixture of aluminum with silicon, calcium, magnesium, or their alloys. The molten steel with the dissolved deoxidizer flows into the molds. The deoxidizer chamber is configured and the final deoxidizer is formulated in such a manner that the final deoxidizer is dissolved at a substantially constant rate by the flowing molten steel.
