  • Patent number: 4327602
Abstract: An emergency release device for the strap of a toe clip for a bicycle pedal. The release device comprises a release member pivotally mounted on free end of the toe clip. One end of the strap is attached to the release member and the other passes through an aperture in a buckle associated with the release member. In one embodiment the buckle consists of a buckle lever, and a passageway is provided through the release member itself. In another embodiment the release member is releasable attached to the buckle. The release member includes a latching member and in response to the pivoting of the rider's foot in the pedal the force exerted on the strap displaces the latching member to its inoperative position. The release member pivots relative to the toe clip thereby permitting the rocking of the buckle lever in the first embodiment or the release of the buckle through a hooking member in the other embodiment.

  • Patent number: 4326433
Abstract: A hydraulically controlled transmission for vehicles such as heavy-duty, high horsepower, off-highway trucks, the transmission having a plurality of selectively engagable change speed gears and hydraulically actuated friction type clutches for selectively engaging the gears to provide various speed ratios for the vehicle. The transmission includes a hydraulic control circuit in communication with the clutches and a rotary range selector valve is located in the circuit and driven in step-by-step increments by a geneva wheel drive means. The arrangement insures that the transmission can be shifted at only one speed range at a time and that an engaged speed range will be released before another speed range is engaged.

  • Patent number: 4324151
Abstract: A control lever 10 is restrained in a neutral position through the interaction of a perforated hinged plate 24 with a horizontal rod 16 extending from said control lever 10. The hinged plate 24 is provided with a spring 44 to urge the plate into engagement with the upwardly extending end portion 20 of the rod 16 attached to the control lever 10. The hinged plate 24 is provided with a cutout 48 having a depth greater than the diameter of the control lever to prevent transverse movement of the control lever 10 when the plate 24 is in a restraining position. The spring 44 also urges the hinged plate 24 into disengaged over center position when the lever restraint is in a disengaged mode.

  • Patent number: 4320671
Abstract: Mechanism for counterbalancing a crankshaft, connecting rod and piston assembly. Carried by the shaft are the typical or conventional counterbalancing mass means. The invention provides additional counterbalancing mass means which are rotatable relative to the shaft and relative to the regular counterbalancing means in a manner to counterbalance through 360.degree.. The additional counterbalancing means are driven by a gear means coaxial with the shaft and additional driving planetary gear means mounted on a shaft which planetates, the planetary gear means not rotating about their axes. The additional counterbalancing mass means are driven at a speed twice that of the regular counterbalancing masses. The conventional counterbalancing masses and the additional counterbalancing masses take relative positions throughout the 360.degree. to counterbalance at all positions.

  • Patent number: 4318309
Abstract: A torsional vibration damper of the type having an inertia ring coupled to a hub by an elastomer member. The inertia ring is formed of two axially spaced ring parts. Each ring part carries an annular groove. A radially extending disc locking element (in the form of a flat washer) carries an axially extending key, the ends of the key being deformed towards a radially extending position by pushing the two ring parts together, the deformed key ends thus holding the two ring parts in assembly. The disc locking element also is compressed and thus exerts an axial force urging the two ring parts apart. In an embodiment, the disc locking element carries a second axially extending key, radially spaced from the first key and is similarly deformed into a second annular groove. In still another embodiment, one inertia ring part carries an integral, axially extending locking key. This key is received by a complementary annular groove in the other ring part, the disc locking element being optionally omitted.

  • Patent number: 4317385
Abstract: A geneva mechanism has a slotted geneva wheel and a driving cam wheel engageable with the geneva wheel to impart stepwise rotation thereto. The geneva wheel carries rollers, two of which are simultaneously engageable by a first part-cylindrical surface on the cam wheel to lock the geneva wheel against rotation. This simultaneous engagement imparts a slight resilient stress to the parts and thereby prevents backlash movement during the locked condition. Additionally a second, parallel part-cylindrical surface on the cam wheel co-operates with the first such surface and with two of the geneva wheel rollers to maintain the geneva wheel under control of the cam wheel as the latter starts and ends its driving engagement.

  • Patent number: 4308763
Abstract: A longitudinally mounted drive train for an automotive vehicle usable with either a manual transmission or an automatic transmission. A housing encloses a clutch in the manual drive train or a torque converter in the automatic drive train. The housing is fastened, in the manual drive train, directly onto the housing of the manual transmission or, in the automatic drive train, by means of a bearing support housing to the housing of the automatic transmission. The housing can be formed of two parts. In both drive trains a shaft having a differential bevel pinion can be provided to couple the transmission to a differential to permit front wheel drive or four wheel drive. The use of common components for the manual drive train and for the automatic drive train results in greatly reduced production costs and lower parts inventory.
