Abstract: In an apparatus for manipulating workpieces in an electron beam drilling machine, workpieces are mounted on rotatable disks which in turn are mounted on a housing which is rotatable and translatable. Each disk, as a fixture holding the workpiece, is unlocked, rotated, and locked in a new position by the motion of a single driving member and associated elements. The single driving members associated with each workpiece indexing assembly are driven through a system of gears from a single central shaft which passes through the vacuum chamber wall to externally mounted actuators and controls.

Abstract: A differential case has a spider assembly within the case. The spider assembly has a plurality of shafts with each carrying a pinion. The end of each shaft is aligned with a port in the periphery of the case. A rigid retaining band is mounted to the case, and it surrounds the case and covers each of the ports. The band prevents a shaft in the spider assembly from leaving the case whenever the shaft breaks from the assembly.
Abstract: A thrust piece having a cylindrical, thin-walled portion is associated with the rack biasing device of a rack and pinion steering gear. The thin-walled portion is slotted and urged into contact with the gear housing by a spreader element to dampen movement of the biasing device which is slidably supported in the housing.

Abstract: An infinitely variable traction roller transmission has traction rollers arranged pivotally between two toric traction discs with which they are engaged at variable pivot positions for transmitting motion at a variable transmission ratio. The toric discs are provided with flanges along which the traction rollers are guided in their pivotal end positions.
Abstract: A stroke self-adjusting mechanism for a control cable comprising an adjusting member, such as adjusting lever or cam plate, having first and second locking pins and pivotally connected to the inner cable by a movable pin, and a lever provided with first and second surfaces; and therefore while the adjusting member is freely moved against the lever in the rest state of the lever to adjust an expansion or contraction of the inner cable, the first and the second locking pins being contacted with and being pressed against each of the above lock surfaces by the rotation of the lever to lock the adjusting member to the lever so as to be able to enoughly operate the inner cable.
Abstract: In a power take-off a spring engages a hydraulically actuated clutch-activating pressure plate to force the same into a neutral position. In one embodiment of the invention a hydraulically operated spring-loaded piston for arresting the rotational motion of an output shaft engages the pressure plate upon shifting thereof into its neutral position and consequent uncoupling of the output shaft from an input or drive shaft. In another embodiment of the invention an annular friction disk slidably connected or splined to the output shaft for stopping the same is clamped between a brake housing and a hydraulically actuated piston. The pistons automatically retract under the action of respective springs upon shut-off of the vehicle engine driving the input shaft and energizing the hydraulic system actuating the plates and the pistons, whereby the angular position of the output shaft may be manually adjusted.
Abstract: The fundamental principle of this invention is based on the fact that the moment of force or torque is equal to the product of a force and a distance through which the force acts from the fulcrum. The pedal of a bicycle comprises a pair of freely rotatable treads together with a pair of inner and outer plates around a spindle connected to a crank, the spindle, a center tube covering the spindle, and minor parts. The force of man's leg onto the pedal per unit time can be conserved or increased by securing one of the rotatable treads to the spindle by means of a one-way clutch means provided in the space between center tube and spindle in order to enlarge the distance from the fulcrum to the point of action of the force.
Abstract: Rack segments are formed with teeth to mesh with drive gears of a mining machine to propel it along a conveyor. The drive gears are spaced apart and mounted on a drive shaft with a sleeve member therebetween to engage the top surface of a rack segment. The rack segment has a rectangular body with arch-shaped upper and lower surfaces. Opposite end portions have a vertical hole to receive a support member which is anchored in place by a pin passed through an opening transversely thereto and arranged along a horizontal plane of symmetry. Attachments forming gear teeth project at uniformly-spaced intervals from opposite lateral sides of the rack body. The attachments have involute-like flanks extending upwardly and downwardly from the horizontal plane of symmetry such that a worn rack segment can be continually used by inverting its position 180.degree..

Abstract: A reversible mechanism including a driven member with a rim having drive surfaces on its opposite sides. An elongate driving member is flexibly engageable with either of these surfaces at a predetermined position. The mechanism is useful in conjunction with a manually operated motor for controlled winding or unwinding of strands or yarns. It is also adaptable for reversal of movement by providing an extremity or extremities on the rim which, upon movement to the predetermined position, allow the driving member to disengage from one surface of the rim and to engage the other surface.
Abstract: A hydrostatic-mechanical drive for a load, e.g. a self-propelled machine such as a concrete mixer comprising a hydrostatic motor which can be connected to the load via a mechanical transmission. According to the invention, the shaft of the hydrostatic motor extends into the control plate or cover thereof (through which hydraulic communication is made with the drum carrying the axial pistons of the motor) and is provided with an inductive sensor on this plate to form a pulse generator (with a metal gear on the shaft) whose output represents a parameter of rotation of the motor.
Abstract: A fluid pressure control system for controlling an automatic transmission which includes a gear transmission mechanism and several fluid pressure actuated friction engaging mechanisms, selective engagement of which provides various speed stages from the gear transmission mechanism. A line pressure valve produces a line pressure which increases from a base pressure by an amount proportional to engine load. A throttle pressure valve produces a throttle pressure which is proportional to engine load. A shift valve selectively switches supply of an actuating pressure to one of the friction engaging mechanisms via a passage, according to the operational condition of the vehicle. The actuating pressure is supplied by a fluid pressure control system which receives supply of line pressure and which outputs a pressure which, when engine load is medium, is approximately equal to line pressure, but which, when engine load is small or is large, is substantially lower than line pressure.

Abstract: A ratchet bearing is provided for mounting the slats in a shutter frame which incorporates directly into the bearing, by virtue of a trunion pin having a ribbed surface which rotates within a bearing collar having inwardly directed detents, a multiple detention action such that when the slat is rotationally opened or closed, the bearing will seat in one of a multiplicity of detent positions so that the shutter will not sag shut or otherwise move after it has been set.
Abstract: A chain tensioning device comprises a pair of arms 2, 3 which are pivoted together and urged apart so that the arm 3 applies a tensioning force to a chain by means of a spring loaded cam block 5. A catch disc 9 and rod 8 arrangement is provided to prevent return movement of the spring loaded block and hence collapse of the arm 3 under load reversals of the chain.
