  • Patent number: 6135839
Abstract: A field emission display having element including a first electrode, and a second electrode laminated to the first electrode through an insulating layer. The first electrode has an opening; the second electrode has a hole of a planar shape corresponding to that of the opening at a position matched with the opening; and the insulating layer has a through-hole continuous to the opening and the hole. An upper edge portion of the hole is formed into a cross-sectional shape having an edge angle in a range of 80 to 100.degree., and at least part of the upper edge portion of the hole is exposed in the through-hole. In this element, electrons are emitted from the second electrode through the upper edge portion of the hole exposed in the through-hole by applying a specific voltage between the first electrode and the second electrode. With this configuration, a distance between the gate electrode and a field emission portion of the cathode electrode can be accurately controlled with a simple structure.

  • Patent number: 6132278
Abstract: Diamond microtip field emitters are used in diode and triode vacuum microelectronic devices, sensors and displays. Diamond diode and triode devices having integral anode and grid structures can be fabricated. Ultra-sharp tips are formed on the emitters in a fabrication process in which diamond is deposited into mold cavities in a two-step deposition sequence. During deposition of the diamond, the carbon graphite content is carefully controlled to enhance emission performance. The tips or the emitters are treated by post-fabrication processes to further enhance performance.

  • Patent number: 6129603
Abstract: A flat panel display and a method for forming a flat panel display. In one embodiment, the flat panel display includes a sealed interior region formed by heating a low temperature glass frit in a vacuum. The low temperature glass frit is placed between a faceplate and a backplate. The low temperature glass frit is heated such that it melts, forming a sealed interior region between the faceplate and the backplate which is hermetically sealed. The low temperature glass frit allows for melting of the glass frit at a temperature lower than that of prior art processes. The resulting sealed interior region is in a vacuum. Therefore, evacuation tubes are not required and process steps associated with evacuation through an evacuation tube are eliminated.

  • Patent number: 6127776
Abstract: A method and apparatus for securing a deflection yoke onto a cathode ray tube includes forming pockets having deformable, resilient inner walls along a circumferential surface of the deflection yoke. When the deflection yoke is mounted on the cathode ray tube, the inner walls deform slightly to conform to a contact portion of the cathode ray tube. The position of the deflection yoke with respect to the cathode ray tube it then adjusted into proper alignment. Once the deflection yoke and cathode ray tube are properly aligned, fast curing epoxy is poured into each of the plastic pockets, wedging the deflection yoke permanently into its desired orientation on the cathode ray tube. The pockets can either be integrally formed with the deflection yoke or they can be manufactured and attached to the deflection yoke in a separate operation.

  • Patent number: 6116975
Abstract: A field emission cathode manufacturing method is provided which comprise the steps of forming a cathode electrode on a substrate; forming an insulative layer and gate electrode, each having fine holes formed therein, in this order on the cathode electrode; thereafter immersing them in a solution in which particles of an electron-emitting substance is dispersed; and electrically depositing particles of the electron emission substance on the cathode electrode facing the fine holes by an electrophoresis using the cathode electrode as a positive or negative electrode, thereby forming an electron emitter. The wet method is adopted to form the field emission cathode, which permits to considerably reduce the plant and equipment investment and manufacture even a large-screen FED with an improved yield. Also, since the electron missive substance particles are fully exposed, a very low accuracy is allowed in producing the electron emitter.

  • Patent number: 6116974
Abstract: A display device, and a method for making and operating the display device are described. The display device comprises a base plate containing at least one emitter, a display screen, and a spacer located between the base plate and display screen, where the spacer has a high concentration of an emitter-cleaning material. The spacer may comprise a xerogel or aerogel material and the emitter-cleaning material may comprise hydrogen. The spacer and a method for making the spacer and using the spacer to clean an emitter are also described. The spacer material cleans the emitter by absorbing gases during fabrication of the display device and desorbing emitter-cleaning gases during operation of the display device. By keeping the emitter clean, the spacer retains the work function of the emitter at a low level, thereby prolonging the usefulness of the display device.

Ceramic material is also extruded so as to form seal material bars. The seal material bars are placed between the backplate and the faceplate and glass frit slurry is placed between adjoining seal material bars. Alternatively, seal material bars having joining features are used by mating joining features of adjoining seal material bars. A heating step melts the seal material so as to form a sealed interior region. Alternatively, the bars of seal material are used to form a seal material frame that is disposed between the faceplate and the backplate.
