  • Patent number: 5181853
Abstract: An electrical connector wherein fluid pressure (pneumatics or hydraulics) is used to actuate an expandable bladder located within the housing of the connector to exert force against two flexible circuit members also located substantially within the connector's housing to cause these members to move toward each other and for highly dense arrays of electrical contacts thereon to engage each other in a predetermined manner. A first alignment means (e.g., pin and corresponding aperture) is used to provide initial alignment of the two flexible circuit members perior to contact being made. Once such contact occurs, and the expandable bladder is expanded further, the bladder is able to provide additional alignment for the engaged contacts so as to prevent movement thereof relative to each other. Such precise alignment is critical in highly dense arrays of large numbers of small contacts as required in many of today's information handling systems (computers).

  • Patent number: 5171158
Abstract: An underwater electrical connector of the plug and socket type intended for use in underwater environments, including a dielectric fluid-filled bladder having a sealed port with a movable dielectric stopper that moves from the first position of sealing the port to a second position of exposing electrical sockets to a probe having multiple electrical contacts. The probe is moved through the port and against the stopper, pushing the stopper to a retracted position where the electrical contacts electrically mate with the sockets. A plurality of wipers are positioned in the bladder with at least one between each of the electrical sockets, which wipers seal against the outer surface of the probe forming separate sealed, wiper chambers enclosing the electrical connection between each of the contacts and sockets. The outer diameter of the stopper is smaller than the inner diameter of the wipers, providing dielectric fluid communication passage between the several chambers.

  • Patent number: 5167176
Abstract: A tool for use with a tool holder has a body to which at least one blade such as a circular saw blade or milling cutter is clamped to prevent the blade from turning when a selected tooth is brought into cutting or grooving contact with a rotating work piece, the blade is of a type having its teeth so spaced and arranged that each tooth is spaced 90.degree. from another tooth. The body of the tool has first and second parallel clamping surfaces through which a straight slot opens. A first or front clamping member has a hub on which a blade is rotatably mounted and which fits the slot and is held thereby against turning. The two clamping members are connected by a threaded member by which the clamping members are drawn towards each other to clamp the blade against the first clamping surface. The slot is disposed and dimensioned so that, in use, it is normal to the axis of the work piece with one end above and the other end below that axis.

  • Patent number: 5156501
Abstract: A face mill having one or more cartridges for adjustably supporting cutter inserts on the end face of the rotating tool body. Each cartridge has a convex arcuate surface seated against a concave arcuate seat surface formed on or in the milling tool body. A torsion bar is integrally extended from the cartridge parallel to the axis of the concave seat surface. Also, a manual adjustment screw is located perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the cartridge for applying an adjustment force to the cartridge in opposition to the action of the torsion leaf spring. The torsion bar applies a pre-load force to the cartridge. The manual adjustment screw exerts an opposing force that rotates the cartridge to a desired position for proper orientation of the associated cutter insert.

  • Patent number: 5154635
Abstract: A coaxial cable has a plurality of insulated beads threaded onto an inner conductor and individually having an exterior shape such that a gap exits between each adjacent pair of beads with the gap increasing in width radially. A conductive flexible braid ensleeves the beads with that braid having interstices ventive of air but preclusive of the passage of plasma. An insulative covering ensleeves the braid and also is ventive of air but preclusive of passage of the plasma. A connector includes a termination having a barrel-shaped body fitting over the outer cable conductor. An outer connector element projects outward from the outer end of the body with that element having longitudinal slots that define a circumferentially-spaced series of flexible fingers. Those slots are ventive of air but have a size sufficiently small to preclude passage of a plasma. An inner electrical connector element projects outwardly from the inner cable conductor beyond the body.

  • Patent number: 5154105
Abstract: A pick off attachment for use with automatic multiple spindle machines includes a spindle and housing to be mounted within a sliding workholder, which is moveable along the longitudinal slide of the workstation of the cutting machine. The spindle is mounted upon a splined shaft which is mechanically linked to the spindle via a collet at one end and connected to the machine gear box at the other. The shaft extends partially into the spindle where it is connected to an ejector. The face of the ejector rests inside the shoulder of another collet. This collet is mounted on the interior of the spindle and serves to hold the part to be machined during the machining cycle. Two adjustable nuts on the shaft allow the positions of the part holding collet and the ejection mechanism with respect to the part to be machined to be varied.

  • Patent number: 5144772
Abstract: An indexing mechanism in a machine tool for selectively positioning plural pin portions of a crankshaft at the machining position aligned with the work spindle, wherein a indexing member engaging with the crankshaft through an engaging pin is rotated by an indexing motor through a gear train. The crankshaft is initially rotated in a first direction until a selected pin portion engages with a rest shoe of a rest device provided on the bed in order to be positioned in a reference angle position, in which the selected pin portion is located at the machining position aligned with a work spindle. The crankshaft is then clamped on the chucking device. After that, the indexing motor is rotated in a second direction opposite to the first direction until the load of the motor exceeds a reference level, so that the influence of a backlash in the gear train and a clearance between the engaging pin and the crankshaft is eliminated.
