  • Patent number: 7321784
Abstract: A method for providing configuration information for use in installing a new wireless station to a wireless network that minimizes errors is presented. The configuration information is distributed by storing the configuration information onto a device with a memory and then distributing the device to the users interested in installing new wireless stations. The device is attached to a computer to which the wireless station is coupled, initiating a transfer of the configuration information. The computer uses the configuration information to configure the wireless station. The method also provides a way to limit access to the configuration information through the use of encryption and limiting the number of times the configuration information is retrieved. The method is also an effective way to distribute security keys for encryption systems whose purpose is to secure communications in a wireless network.

  • Patent number: 7321582
Abstract: Disclosed is an algorithm for dynamically changing an RTS threshold, which is a threshold for RTS-CTS frame exchange, depending on the traffic load in the BSS so as to maximize the MAC throughput of an IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN system. The present invention defines a new performance index based on the total time taken to transmit a frame and the time taken to successfully transmit a data frame. The RTS threshold is dynamically increased/decreased in a predefined range depending on the change in the new performance index.

  • Patent number: 7319865
Abstract: In a cellular telephone terminal having increased storage capability, ease of entry and access for data stored therein is provided through utilization of a computer equipped with a modem, a wired telephone network and the cellular telephone network. A user utilizes the ease of data entry implicit to modern computers through dedicated or existing personal information organizers to input data into a database, such as a personal dialing directory, at the computer. For the entering of data at the cellular telephone terminal, first the terminal, also equipped with a modem, is configured in a data download mode where data can be received from the computer and entered into on-board storage. The computer then places a modem telephone call to the terminal, either directly or through a network translator, and transfers the data into the terminal. The data is then accessible through standard data recall techniques using a display and interface keys on the telephone terminal.

  • Patent number: 7317918
Abstract: In a wireless ad hoc network comprising a plurality of nodes, a primary node receives a domain name service (DNS) query from a node. The primary node determines whether the query can be resolved based on cached information. If the DNS query can be resolved based on cached information, the primary node sends a response to the node. If the DNS query cannot be resolved based on cached information, the primary node sends the DNS query outside the ad hoc network for resolution.

  • Patent number: 7308261
Abstract: A system, apparatus, and method is directed towards managing a quick registration of a mobile device over a network. The quick registration is directed at enabling an end-user to conveniently register a mobile device to be useable for such communications sessions, as an instant messaging (IM) session, and the like. The invention employs a pre-determined extension to a short code that instructs a server to register the mobile device sending the message. The message includes an account identifier along with a password to the account. The message may be a single message line, thereby providing a quick and convenient mechanism for registering the mobile device. The server receives the message along with a mobile device identifier, and stores a mapping relationship between the account identifier and the mobile device identifier after validating the password. In one embodiment, the message includes a command that the mobile device also be logged into an IM session.

  • Patent number: 7308253
Abstract: An apparatus and methods are disclosed for enabling a telecommunications terminal to notify its user of the arrival of a message via a ringtone whose properties are based on information from one or more call logs. A network infrastructure element (e.g., a switch, a server, etc.) receives a message directed to a terminal and establishes property values for a ringtone (e.g., tempo, volume, pitch, rhythm, etc.) based on information from a call log (e.g., how many times the caller has called today, whether an earlier call from this caller was returned, etc.). In a first illustrative embodiment the network infrastructure element sends the message and the instantiated ringtone to the terminal, while in a second illustrative embodiment the network infrastructure element sends the message and the property values to the terminal, and the terminal plays a locally-stored ringtone in accordance with the property values.

  • Patent number: 7302258
Abstract: The present invention relates to a communication environment where calls are established with a single mobile terminal through either a cellular network or a packet network via a local wireless adaptor, which is capable of wirelessly communicating with the mobile terminal. As such, the mobile terminal may facilitate traditional cellular calls via the wireless network, or packet-based calls via the local wireless adaptor. When the mobile terminal is involved in a call and within a communication zone of the local wireless adaptor, the packet-based call is facilitated via the local wireless adaptor. As the mobile terminal approaches the outer limits of the communication zone, the call to the mobile terminal is transferred to another connection which is established through the cellular network. As such, the call may continue via the cellular network when local wireless communications are no longer available or not desired by the user.

  • Patent number: 7302265
Abstract: A mobile station in an idle state is associated with a current sector-carrier that has a current pilot channel at a current carrier frequency. In response to a request to originate a call, the mobile station compares its current sector-carrier with one or more candidate sector-carriers that have pilot channels at carrier frequencies distinct from the current carrier frequency. The mobile station measures received signal strengths of the current carrier frequency and the one or more candidate carrier frequencies and measures pilot signal levels of the current pilot channel and the one or more candidate pilot channels. If a candidate sector-carrier has a carrier frequency with a received signal strength that exceeds that of the current sector-carrier, and has a pilot channel with a pilot signal level that exceeds that of the current sector-carrier, the mobile station uses that candidate sector-carrier to transmit a call origination message.

  • Patent number: 7295817
Abstract: A wireless data communication unit (700) shares a data communication resource with a plurality of other data communication units. The wireless data communication unit (700) receives channel status information from a wireless serving communication unit on an outbound channel (100) and transmits data to the wireless serving communication unit on an inbound channel. The wireless communication unit includes a processor (708) for monitoring channel status symbols inserted on the outbound channel, such that the processor (708) regulates time intervals between successive data transmissions (480) on the inbound channel dependent upon the monitored channel status symbols inserted on the outbound channel. A method of sharing a communication resource is also described.
