  • Patent number: 7283814
Abstract: A method and apparatus for scheduling data transmissions is disclosed that reduces the delay variability in transmissions of data. A scheduling metric is calculated as a function of a TCP throughput rate for each mobile terminal in the system. The relative value of this metric for a user is used to schedule data transmissions from that user. As a result, TCP time-outs are reduced or avoided and the throughput and the predictability of system performance are increased.

  • Patent number: 7283834
Abstract: An invention is disclosed whereby a wireless network node, equipped with two or more radio transceivers statically tuned to non-interfering frequency channels, can make decisions regarding which channel to use when communicating with a neighboring wireless node. A multi-radio unification protocol implemented in a wireless node coordinates the use of multiple wireless network interface cards and provides a virtual layer that hides the multiple physical network interfaces from higher layers of a node's network protocol stack. The invention is applicable to wireless networks generally, including those in which some nodes do not have multiple radios or do not recognize the multi-radio unification protocol. The invention makes possible simultaneous transmissions using available channels, thereby reducing interference and delay while increasing the overall capacity of the network.

  • Patent number: 7277707
Abstract: In the method provided, test transmissions between the mobile user terminal and base station antennas are made, and the received test transmissions processed to determine respective signal path quality for each of the base station antennas. Upon the determined signal path quality exceeding a first predetermined threshold, but being less than a second predetermined threshold higher than the first predetermined threshold, the mobile user terminal is connected to the corresponding base station antenna by control channels but not data channels so as to be time synchronised. Upon the determined signal path quality exceeding the second predetermined threshold, the mobile user terminal is connected to the corresponding base station antenna by both control channels and data channels so as to be call connected.

  • Patent number: 7274907
Abstract: A wireless instrumentation system enables a plurality of low power wireless transceivers to transmit measurement data from a plurality of remote station sensors to a central data station accurately and reliably. The system employs a relay based communications scheme where remote stations that cannot communicate directly with the central station due to interference, poor signal strength, etc., are instructed to communicate with other of the remote stations that act as relays to the central station. A unique power management scheme is also employed to minimize power usage at each remote station and thereby maximize battery life. Each of the remote stations preferably employs a modular design to facilitate easy reconfiguration of the stations as required.

  • Patent number: 7272402
Abstract: Methods and systems for obtaining the location of a caller during an emergency or other telephone call. Before or during a call, a phone system can obtain from one or more sources a subscriber access line identity associated with a subscriber location record that includes a subscriber access line identity attribute and a subscriber location attribute. A phone system can send a query that includes the subscriber access line identity to a subscriber location query system that returns a subscriber location record or a subscriber location to the phone system. The phone system can then display the caller location information to a phone system, an agent or operator so that emergency services can be quickly and accurately dispatched. Using similar procedure and a memory, phone systems can also determine if a subscriber phone has or is changing location. • Patent number: 7269423
Abstract: A QoS-based call admission system and method for a mobile communication system. To establish a call for a mobile station according to the QoS of the call, upon request of setup of a call requiring a QoS guarantee, a base transceiver station determines whether a channel element is available. In the presence of an available channel element, the base transceiver station determines whether a remaining bandwidth can support a data rate required to guarantee the QoS. If the data rate is supported, the base transceiver station assigns the channel element and connects its intra switch to a base station controller. Then the base transceiver station transmits a call accept response signal to the base station controller.

  • Patent number: 7262719
Abstract: Methods and systems for improving performance of data decoding using apriori information about the data steam. In one aspect a decoder may determine the degree of lossiness inherent in the data or in the application of the data as a maximum resolution of data to be decoded and may thereby streamline entropy decoding of the data. For example, in DCT-based image data compression coupled with Huffman or other entropy encoding, apriori data may be analyzed to determine the maximum required resolution in bits of the DCT encoded data so as to simplify the entropy decoding. Other aspects optimize DCT decoding computation with faster approximations where the quantization values indicate a higher degree of lossiness or noise in the DCT encoded data. Apriori information may generally comprise values in the quantization table of a DCT encoded image and may be analyzed to determine the maximum symbol size and/or degree of lossiness.

  • Patent number: 7263381
Abstract: A system and method is described here for discovering capabilities of nearby telephones using a secondary communication channel. The secondary communication channel can use various media that can include infrared, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g, or any other medium that is not used for the purpose of primary telephone communication. Usage of the secondary channel isolates this feature from the state of the art system and at the same time provides for a common method of interoperability for various telephones. Infrared communication for the secondary channel is preferred, due to its cost, and easy of usage.

  • Patent number: 7259702
Abstract: The present invention provides a memory device including a serial-parallel conversion section that converts serial data into parallel data, a parallel-serial conversion section that converts parallel data into serial data, and a parallel-parallel conversion section that changes a bit width of the parallel data. This memory device connects one external terminal to the serial-parallel conversion section and another external terminal to the parallel-serial conversion section when access using a serial interface is performed. On the other hand, the memory device connects a plurality of external terminals to the parallel-parallel conversion section when access using a parallel interface is performed, thereby enabling the memory device to occasionally realize parallel transfer of data while using a conventional package.

  • Patent number: 7260384
Abstract: A method for dynamically selecting a voice mail system to receive a call on behalf of a cellular wireless subscriber. A radio access network (RAN) receives a voice mail call request, and a policy server determines which of a plurality of voice mail systems should receive the call from the media gateway system. The policy server can make this determination based on user profile logic and/or by voice interaction with the caller. In one embodiment, the determination may be whether to set up the call to a voice mail system provided by the subscriber's wireless carrier or rather whether to set up the call to a voice mail system provided by an enterprise that serves the subscriber.
