Patent number: 6611861Abstract: A method of providing Internet hosting and access is described. A database is used to store hosting and access descriptors. The hosting and access descriptors describe the configuration of Internet services such as HTTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP4, and FTP for a hosted site. When a client over the Internet, or other network, requests a service from the hosted domain, the DNS system is interfaced to the database to select a computer to use to support the requested access. The database can also be used to store load information about the computers available for providing Internet hosting and access. Once the DNS system selects a computer and returns the IP address of the computer to the client, the subsequent communications are between the client and the selected computer directly. The selected computer can access the database to retrieve configuration information to respond to service requests from clients.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1999Date of Patent: August 26, 2003Assignee: XO Communications, Inc.Inventors: David Schairer, Jourdan Clish

Patent number: 6606657Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for gathering and disseminating detailed information regarding web site visitation. A server system is connected to the Internet and receives, processes and supplies detailed information from subscribed users. In response to user queries, the server system provides detailed information regarding the sites that have been visited, the duration and times of such visits, the most popular web sites, the most popular jump sites from a particular web page, etc. Such information is gathered and transmitted to subscribers who have downloaded a client-side reporting and communicating software application that is compatible with the server system. In addition, since users submit profile information about themselves, much demographic information is known about the users. Demographic information as to the popularity of visited web sites may then be easily determined, stored and updated by the server system.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1999Date of Patent: August 12, 2003Assignee: Comverse, Ltd.Inventors: Moshe Zilberstein, Gaby Matsliach, Avner Ronen, Ronen Ventura, Benny Rousso, Shai Buber

Patent number: 6571280Abstract: A file request is received by the operating system, and the appropriate IFS driver for the file is called. The IFS driver remaps the drive path based on a drive location list contained in a file redirection table in the IFS driver. Drive or server redundancy is ensured by simultaneously broadcasting writes to each drive on the drive location list. Redundancy is ensured for read operations by sequentially traversing the drive location list in the event of a non-responsive drive or server.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1999Date of Patent: May 27, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Kenneth Hubacher

Patent number: 6539420Abstract: A method for reuse of image data in a distributed computer network is operative at a web server in response to a request from a client browser for a web page. At the web server, a determination is made regarding whether the web page includes a given object reference. If so, a template defining a composite image is retrieved. The template identifies at least one image object to be retrieved from another location, typically from a host remote to the web server. Once the image object is retrieved, a given transform is applied to the image object to generate a transformed image object. The given transform, for example, is selected from a group of transforms such as: scaling, mirroring, cutting, cropping, inverting, flipping, reversing, rotating, color shifting, and combinations of the above. Thereafter, the transformed image object is mapped into the composite image according to the template. After the composite image is created, it is served within the web page originally requested by the client.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1999Date of Patent: March 25, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Duane Kimbell Fields, Thomas Preston Gregg, Sebastian Daniel Hassinger, William Walter Hurley, II

Patent number: 6532493Abstract: A method for routing a data request received by a caching system is described. The caching system includes a router and a cache, and the data request identifies a source platform, a destination platform, and requested data. Where the source and destination platforms correspond to an entry in a list automatically generated by the caching system, the data request is transmitted without determining whether the requested data are stored in the cache.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1998Date of Patent: March 11, 2003Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: James A. Patent number: 6526448Abstract: A pseudo proxy server is provided for a host network when the host network experiences periods of congestion. The host network determines whether an arrival rate of data requests exceeds a predetermined threshold. If so, the host network adds an address of a pseudo proxy server to a list of servers aliased to the host network. Thereafter, data requests are routed to the pseudo proxy server on a round robin basis. The pseudo proxy server may be engaged without first loading information content from the host network on the pseudo proxy server.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1998Date of Patent: February 25, 2003Assignee: AT&T Corp.Inventor: Charles Douglas Blewett

Patent number: 6502137Abstract: Upon the receipt by an HTTP server over the Internet from a web browser for title information for audio or video data, the HTTP server retrieves the title information and sends it to the web browser along with a passcode particularly associated with the requested title information. Then, when an application server coupled to the HTTP server receives a request for the audio or video data from a viewer application associated with a web browser, the audio or video data will only be sent from a video server to the viewer application over the Internet if the request for the audio or video data is accompanied by the passcode. After sending the audio or video data to the viewer application, the passcode is invalidated. If the request for the audio or video data requests titles other than those associated with the passcode, the request is denied.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1997Date of Patent: December 31, 2002Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Lynn Erich Peterson, Mack Edward Phelps, Gary Roy Shippy, John Douglas Wright

Patent number: 6502127Abstract: Office workers are equipped with a telephone and a desktop computer, the latter including an email system which allows telephony applets to be included in email messages. Thus the recipient of a message which includes an applet might typically be presented with a call back button. When this button is selected, it automatically provides the recipient with a telephone connection through to the sender of the message. This is accomplished by the applet using JTAPI to interact with the appropriate telephony equipment in order to form the desired connection.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1999Date of Patent: December 31, 2002Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Michael John Edwards, Amir Nathoo, David Seager Renshaw

Patent number: 6463461Abstract: A system is described that can be used to communicate information among a group of participants. A participant may create an electronic form specifying a list of network addresses corresponding to other participants intended to receive the communication. A server receives the form and delivers a message associated with an electronic medium. When the participant opens the message, the electronic medium is produced by the server and includes static and dynamic content. The participant can add content to the dynamic content. The dynamic content regions can be asynchronously dynamically updated in the server to indicate a then current content of the electronic medium, and can be accessed by other participants in the group.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1999Date of Patent: October 8, 2002Assignee: Zaplet, Inc.Inventors: Mike Hanson, Graham Miller, Brian Axe

Patent number: 6457045Abstract: A method and system are described that can be used to support making choices, such as in a schedule, invitation, or poll, among a group of participants connected to a network. A participant creates an electronic form specifying the subject matter of a choice topic and a list of network addresses corresponding to other choosing participants. A server receives the form and includes resources for delivering an electronic mail message associated with an electronic medium providing various choices. When the participant opens the message, an electronic medium is produced by the server that includes static and dynamic regions. The participant can input a choice using an interaction region. The dynamic regions are asynchronously updated in the server and indicate the current content of the electronic medium that can be accessed by other participants in the group.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 2000Date of Patent: September 24, 2002Assignee: Zaplet, Inc.Inventors: Michael Hanson, Graham Miller, Brian Axe, Steven Richard Evans
