Abstract: A computer object access control graphical user interface allows a user to set computer locations where a computer object may be accessed and other users who may access the computer object. The computer object may be a computer file, a computer message, person contact information, etc. The access control user interface may operate, for example, to save a computer object to one or more computer locations, and also to specify sharing of the computer object with one or more other users so that they can access the object. Saving a computer object and setting the sharing of it are together referred to as controlling access to the object, the former referring to where the object may be accessed from and the latter referring to who may access the object. This provides, therefore, a unified interface for selecting and displaying destinations that can be either a file store or a person, thereby unifying the control of access to a computer object.

Abstract: A system facilitates the secure access, transfer and update of patient record information and the creation and navigation of image menus supporting the location and access of desired patient record data by a user. A system provides a user interface for use by a portable processing device for accessing and navigating patient record information. The system receives user identification information for use in authorizing user operation of the portable processing device and initiates display of an image including a plurality of links to a corresponding plurality of individual patients. The system also initiates display of a patient record content index image including a plurality of links to a corresponding plurality of items of patient record information in response to user selection of a link to one of the plurality of individual patients.

Abstract: Methods and arrangements are provided for use in multiple user computing environments. These methods and arrangements can be configured to allow for a plurality of separate and concurrent desktops and workspaces within the shared computing environment. One method includes creating a separate desktop thread for each user that is authenticated during a logon process, creating a separate desktop associated with each desktop thread, and maintaining a list of desktop threads that are created. In this manner, several users can be logged on simultaneously. In certain implementations, the method further includes establishing a separate user environment associated with each desktop and launching a separate user shell associated with each desktop. The list of desktop threads allows for selective and/or automatic switching from a first desktop to a second desktop without terminating a desktop thread associated with the first desktop. The methods and arrangements are also applicable to remote process logon and switching.

Abstract: A system and method for navigating within a graphical user interface without using a pointing device is described. A set of one or more keyboard shortcuts is defined, including at least one key. Each keyboard shortcut specifies an action effecting a graphical user interface, which is executed upon input of each key in the keyboard shortcut and at least one key corresponding to a semantically-meaningful hyperlink within Web content. The graphical user interface is navigated. The Web content is provided on a view within the graphical user interface and a graphical pointer indicating a location within the view is included. At least one key input by a user is intercepted and the intercepted key to one such keyboard shortcut is mapped. The action specified by the keyboard shortcut is executed and the view within the Web content is updated relative to the graphical pointer.

Abstract: Methods and systems for browsing video content are described. Video content is accessed. Metadata from a content analysis that is performed on said video content is generated. A portion of said video content based on said generated metadata is presented for display.

The graphical user interface (32) is a layered multimedia environment having a background movie (248) played beneath substantially all of a plurality of screen application regions (220-230). A interactive control movie (240) is displayed in one of the screen application regions and includes control tabs (242) and dynamic button controls (244). A browser application (250) may be embedded in the background movie (248) as part of the layered media environment.

Abstract: The hierarchy of an operation screen of a digital PPC (scanner device) used as an image fetching device is set to correspond to the hierarchy of a directory in a file server for recording a scanned image file. That is, the hierarchy of the operation screen and the hierarchy of the directory are set to have a correspondence relation with respect to each other and changing points of the respective hierarchies reflect on the opposite hierarchies.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system of pinning and displaying pinned items. Pinned items are displayed such that they are visually distinguishable and prioritized higher than related non-pinned items. For example, pinned contacts are displayed at the top of the contact list and are visually distinguishable from the other contacts. A special icon is used to show an item that is “pinned.” contact. A pinned item is a copy of a contact. The copy helps a user quickly access the items they most commonly communicate with and use and provides an importance to an item.

Abstract: An object is associated with one or more controls in a software application. An object associated with a control determines the operation of the data entry user interface when the data entry user interface is being employed to enter data into that control. More particularly, the object may communicate interface characteristics to a component that is responsible for providing the user interface to the user. Such a component may be, for example, a shared software module that renders the user interface on a display, receives input data from the user through the user interface, and routes the entered data to a designated destination. Alternately, the object itself may create a user interface having the specified characteristics.

Abstract: A data processing device capable of rapidly processing data through simple operations by the user without requiring a tape editor to be already executing when capturing data from a Web browser and supplying that data to the tape editor and without requiring the user to start up the tape editor. Abstract: A user interface system and method of displaying lists of information using a squeezed/semi-collapsed state of the group that shows, for example, a portion of the group (e.g., only the first few items of the group) is provided. The squeezed/semi-collapsed state takes up less room on the screen than an open state but gives the user more information about the group than the closed state, allowing more groups to be visible simultaneously while still providing detailed information about the contents of the group.

Abstract: This invention provides systems and methods for displaying and controlling the content of a second graphical application window while in a first graphical application window in a windowed computing environment having a voice recognition engine. The present invention enables a computer user working in a graphical application window to use speech commands to open, view, retrieve, and control help, Internet, and other information in a second graphical application window. Thus, the invention allows a user to keep a first graphical application window open and in focus while simultaneously viewing a second graphical application window; thereby allowing a user to proceed with his/her work while actively opening, positioning, viewing and controlling the content of a second graphical application window containing help, Internet, or other information.

Abstract: Methods, systems and computer program products for manipulating components in a browser document having multiple browser components. A display device visualizes the browser document. The display device indicates at least one editable browser component. A selection of a selected editable browser component is received. The display device indicates at least one target browser component for the selected editable browser component. When a selection of a selected target browser component is received, the browser document is modified accordingly.

Abstract: Systems and methods for providing a user-definable multimedia or digital library are disclosed. Also disclosed are systems and methods for selecting and playing multimedia or digital files from within the library. The selection and playback systems and methods involve a limited number of user activated buttons, which are implemented both for mapping directly to storage locations of particular multimedia or digital files, and for accepting and playing a multimedia or digital file once selected. The limited number of buttons required for the various features of these systems and methods provide vehicle operators, such as automobile drivers, with a safe mechanism and procedure for retrieving and playing customized play lists and particular songs while driving.

Abstract: A method and system for automatically displaying content of a window on a display that has changed orientation is described. The content of a window, such as a dialog box, that has been authored for a particular size is repositioned and resized such that the window is viewable in its entirety when the display screen orientation is changed (e.g., from portrait to landscape.) A scroll bar is added to allow full access to content that is not visible within the display screen when necessary. Likewise, the scrollbar is removed when the scrollbar is no longer necessary in the new orientation. The repositioning and resizing of the window, as well as the addition or removal of the scrollbar occurs without interruption of other operating system applications.

Abstract: Systems for creating and rendering skins are described. In one described embodiment, a system is configured to provide multiple skin elements that comprise part of a user interface and synchronize a property of at least a first of the skin elements with a property of a second of the skin elements such that a change in the property of the second of the elements causes a change in the property of the first of the elements. The system synchronizes properties by describing synchronization between the properties using an XML data structure.

Abstract: Systems for creating and rendering skins are described. In one described embodiment, a system is configured to provide multiple skin elements that comprise part of a user interface that is executing under the influence of a software application. The system synchronizes a property of at least one of the skin elements with a state associated with the software application such that a change in the state of the software application causes a change in the property of the one skin element. In one embodiment, synchronization takes place using an XML data structure.
