  • Patent number: 3976174
Abstract: This specification discloses a transmission clutch brake for use in a torque delivery gear system. A rotatable clutch disc driven by an input shaft and selectively engageable by a pressure plate carries a pair of plates. The plates embrace a brake plate carrying friction material on opposite faces thereof. Upon disengagement of the pressure disc from the clutch plate one of said plates of said pair is moved axially relative to the other thereof in a clamping manner to grip the brake plate against rotation. The latter brake plate is connected to a stationary splined hub utilizing a snap ring. The ring acts as a torsion spring and permits limited slight rotation of the brake plate and clutch disc clamped thereto as well as the input shaft to facilitate meshing of gears of the transmission.

  • Patent number: 3975969
Abstract: A composite gear device having a large toothed wheel and a smaller toothed wheel axially offset with respect to each other. A link chain is provided having the same number of tooth engaging openings as the number of teeth on the larger toothed wheel. The chain is secured to the large toothed wheel, preferably by straining it within its elastic limit, so that the chain engages the teeth in an essentially nonflexible configuration free of any articulative movement. The smaller toothed wheel also engages the chain thus allowing the transmission of power in essentially an axial direction.

  • Patent number: 3974719
Abstract: A mechanical power transmission assembly for starting Stirling engines has a power input shaft driven by a starter motor and a plurality of power take off devices comprising at least two one-way clutches coupled to the shaft, one of which includes a reduction gear. A further power take off device comprises a third one-way clutch coupled to transmit torque from the second power take off device to the first power take off device. Thus a blower may be rotated at the same speed as the starter motor, and a starter gear at a lower speed until the engine speed increases, so that the blower motor can then be driven by the Stirling engine and the starter motor switched off.

  • Patent number: 3974718
Abstract: A torque absorbing carrier for the pinions in an epicyclic gear train which comprises a pair of flanges between which the pinions are mounted to mesh with the sun wheel and the internal gear ring. When the pinions function as planetary gear wheels, one of the flanges operates to transmit the torque moment and is connected to a drive shaft; when the pinions function as star gear wheels, the other flange operates to transmit the torque moment and is firmly anchored in the gear housing. The pinions are pivoted on shaft pins which are resiliently mounted in the torque transmitting flange and fixedly mounted in the other flange to prevent angular motion of the pinions and to maintain the parallel axial alignment between the pinion shafts, the sun wheel shaft and the internal gear ring.

  • Patent number: 3973660
Abstract: A transmission device includes a housing having a clutch assembly therein interposed in controlling relation between an input shaft and an output shaft. The clutch assembly, preferably a wet pack, includes a plurality of driver clutch elements splined to the input shaft, and a plurality of driven clutch elements connected with the output shaft. A non-rotatable axially shiftable force applying plate is operable for shifting a pressure plate axially along the input shaft to shift the clutch assembly into and out of driving relation with respect to the output shaft. A clutch actuator assembly includes a revolvable cam connected with the force applying plate for shifting the same axially of the output shaft. Springs normally urge the clutch actuator assembly and the force applying plate in a de-clutching direction, the spring pressure being absorbed substantially entirely by the input shaft.

  • Patent number: 3971265
Abstract: The fork rod is provided with a step. A force tending to disengage engaged gears produces a moment which causes pivotal rotation of the fork rod, so that the step engages with an abutment formed on one of the fork rod supports preventing gear disengagement. A spring-biased detent ball disposed within the support restrains vibration of the fork rod and maintains the rod in proper position as well.

  • Patent number: 3971461
Abstract: An axially compact clutch and brake mechanism. Inner and outer concentrically mounted clutch and brake drums intermittently coupled respectively by packs of interleaved friction discs and plates are operated by a pressure plate disposed intermediate the clutch and brake disc and plate packs and responds to an annular hydraulic piston to alternately engage the clutch or engage the brake. Brake and clutch packs are axially spaced along the length of concentric input and output shafts while the piston is located radially inwardly of one of the packs and is not axially spaced therefrom so as to reduce the axial length of the assemblage. The mechanism further includes structure whereby the piston is not forced to rotate within its cylinder to thereby lengthen the life of the same.

  • Patent number: 3969957
Abstract: A vehicle transmission employs a pair of coaxial input shafts, one driven at fixed ratio and the other driven at an infinitely variable ratio through a hydrostatic transmission which relatively reverses direction of rotation. A single input-dual input planetary gear assembly couples the coaxial input shafts to an output shaft. The planetary gear assembly is made up of a reverse and low forward speed planetary gear set and a high forward speed planetary gear set connected together to provide a four element planetary gear assembly synchronously shiftable between low and high ranges and which provides torque multiplication throughout the speed range and produces the same direction of rotation of all four elements at substantially or at the same speed when operating at the maximum forward speed condition.

  • Patent number: 3968707
Abstract: A hydraulic speed-changing system for an automotive transmission includes a clutch K2 actuatable by a control valve with associated damper which delays full operation of the clutch to smooth the cut-in. The same clutch is used in third gear and in reverse, its actuation being accompanied in the latter instance by that of a brake B2. Fluid pressure used to control the operation of this brake is also utilized to exert upon the control valve of clutch K2 a supplemental force reducing the delay period of the damper.
