  • Patent number: 3962935
Abstract: A variable speed winch including a uni-directional drum rotatable initially by the clockwise motion of a handle in a clockwise sense only. The winch also includes a gear selector including a control plate rotatable with respect to the drum into an extreme clockwise position wherein a first gear ratio is selected. The gear selector further includes ratchet structure, splined to a shaft rotatable by the handle. The ratchet structure is slidable axially with respect to the shaft under the influence of a cam structure responsive to the relative angular displacements of the handle with respect to the control plate. The control plate has recesses engageable by respective spring-loaded balls captively supported by the ratchet structure. The balls are adapted to enter and lock within the recesses in response to an anti-clockwise rotation of the handle sufficient to cause axial sliding of the ratchet structure, with respect to the shaft, under the influence of the cam structure.

  • Patent number: 3960036
Abstract: G,1 A torque converter for inclusion between a driving shaft and a driven shaft has a driving gear rotatable about a primary axis and in mesh with planetary gears rotatable about second axes parallel to the primary axis. The planetary gears are coupled to eccentric weights also rotatable about the secondary axes in a predetermined phase relationship. The planetary gears and weights are coupled to a driven gear with which there may be selectively meshed either one of a pair of pinions. Each pinion is provided with a unidirectional clutch engagable with a torque shaft having limited rotation and essentially fixed. The clutches work in opposite directions. Preferably, both the driving shaft and the driven shaft, as well as the torque shaft, are provided with torque cushions to smooth out variations in torque. Special inertia relationships are maintained.

  • Patent number: 3960246
Abstract: A spring power device is provided which includes a multiturn coil spring having its inner end anchored to a rotatable shaft and its outer end anchored to a large drive gear which is mounted to rotate freely on the shaft. An electric motor is connected to rotate the shaft. Whenever the coil spring winds down, a microswitch senses the radial outward movement of the outermost turn thereof and connects a battery to energize the motor to wind up the inner end of the coil spring at a fast rate. The drive gear is controlled to release the power stored in the coil spring to drive a load.

  • Patent number: 3960035
Abstract: A speed shifting mechanism for a pneumatic wrench or nutsetter comprises a planetary gear arrangement in the drive mechanism of the wrench in which the planet gear carrier is connected to the driver clutch member of a torque responsive clutch and the planetary ring gear is mounted in a one way clutch to provide for unidirectional rotation of the ring gear. The torque responsive clutch is of the sloping tooth type and the driving clutch member is connected to a piston having opposing faces and fitted in the tool housing to form opposed fluid chambers. Pressure fluid is admitted to one of the chambers at a controlled pressure to act on the piston for holding the clutch in the engaged condition. Movement of the driving clutch member at torque causes pressure fluid at the controlled pressure to be vented and the opposite chamber to become pressurized thereby acting on the clutch to disengage and enable the planetary gear arrangement to become operative to reduce the output speed of the wrench.

  • Patent number: 3960253
Abstract: A heavy duty dog clutch has co-axial driving and driven shaft elements each with a toothed connection to an intermediate sleeve that is axially displaceable to make and release one of said connections. The toothing of the releasable connection is helically formed so that a given direction of driving torque tends to screw together the helical toothing. One of the shaft elements is capable of axial displacement by the reaction to said torque in the helical toothing and this causes a pair of abutment surfaces on the shaft elements to bear against each other to engage the clutch fully.

  • Patent number: 3957145
Abstract: Clutch controlling apparatus which may be utilized in industrial-type vehicles, such as for example, forklift trucks, for controlling the vehicle during inching operations includes a source of fluid pressure, a fluid pressure-type clutch fluidically connected to the pressure source, an inching valve disposed within the fluid circuit connecting the fluid pressure source and the clutch mechanism which controls the degree to which the clutch mechanism is actuated and which in turn is actuated to a degree which is dependent upon the depression of the vehicle brake pedal, and limiting means for selectively inactivating the inching valve such that the inching valve is inoperative independent of the brake pedal. In this manner, when the vehicle is being operated on level ground, the inching operation is performed by intermittently depressing the brake pedal which actuates the inching valve which in turn deactivates the clutch mechanism thereby terminating driving torque to the vehicle transmission.

  • Patent number: 3955444
Abstract: An epicyclic change-speed hub for a bicycle has a driver which overlaps both the planet cage and gear ring in the axial direction of the hub and is connectable with such planet cage and gear ring by respective pawl and ratchet couplings. A spring-loaded coupling sleeve is provided which is movable axially of the hub and such sleeve serves to control, according to its axial position, the operation or otherwise of the coupling between the driver and the planet cage. The coupling sleeve is in two parts, one part being intended to control the coupling between the driver and the planet cage and the other part being co-operable, according to position, with a pawl and ratchet coupling between the gear ring and hub shell to control the operation of such latter coupling. The spring loading is applied to the coupling sleeve parts between the sleeve and a fixed datum and also between the individual parts of the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 3951244
Abstract: A clutch release bearing mounted about a slidable clutch actuating sleeve. The clutch release bearing comprises an inner race ring rotatable about the sleeve, a plurality of roller means, and an outer race ring. The outer race ring is mounted so as normally to be non-rotatable, by an annular dish-like washer secured to the sleeve and having radially extending spokes, the outer ends of which enter into an annular groove formed in the inner surface of the outer ring. The outer ends of the spokes are normally held securely by frictional fit within the groove but are flexed so as to disengage from one surface of the groove under axial actuation of the bearing to thereby permit the bearing as a whole to be self centerable about the central longitudinal axis of the sleeve.
