  • Patent number: 4159656
Abstract: A positive locking differential mechanism that functions to compensate for the difference in driving wheel travel which occurs when turning or traveling over uneven ground, while at the same time functioning to prevent wheel-slip when one wheel loses traction. The differential comprises a spider and center cam assembly having a plurality of trunnions projecting radially from the spider. A plurality of fixed driving clutch teeth are disposed on each side of the spider. The internal diameter of the spider mounts the center cam in such a manner that the same may be rotated a limited, predetermined distance. The center cam is symmetric, having cam lifts on each side which include rounded surfaces that provide anti-friction ramps for disengaging driven clutch members mounted on each side of the spider and center cam assembly. The driven clutch members have clutch teeth which correspond to the clutch teeth of the spider and through which a driving torque is transmitted.

  • Patent number: 4158317
Abstract: A spring washer engaged transmission wherein a plurality of planetary discs are conformed to provide two opposed conical surfaces, the axis of rotation of each disc including the apex of the cone. The planetary discs are received between a first set of two dished washers forming a sun and a second set of similarly shaped washers forming an exterior peripheral ring. Each disc is mounted for rotation on a corresponding pin, the pins being received in cam grooves formed in the driving plate in a first embodiment and being mounted for eccentric rotation in the second embodiment. A centrifugal bob weight attached to each pin in the second embodiment controls the eccentric alignment of the pin thus controlling the displacement of the disc relative the first and second set of dished washers.

  • Patent number: 4142427
Abstract: An accessory is provided for a vehicle having a transmission vacuum modulator and an engine equipped with a supercharging device such as a turbocharger that temporarily boosts intake manifold pressure above atmospheric pressure. The accessory normally provides a communication path for use in coupling a manifold port to a vacuum modulator port so that variations in intake manifold pressure serve as an input signal to the vacuum modulator. The accessory provides for comparing intake manifold pressure with a reference pressure, and, when the manifold pressure exceeds the reference pressure, the communication path is interrupted.

  • Patent number: 4140029
Abstract: A Hydromechanical Transmission is disclosed which consists of a multiple turbine converter, a planetary gear set, one input shaft and one output shaft. The converter and planetary gear set are so arranged that an impeller is fastened to the ring gear of the planetary gear set. At least one turbine, which is driven directly by the input shaft, is fastened to the planet carrier; and the remaining turbines and the sun gear are splined to the output shaft. During low output speed operation, the impeller is driven by the differential action of the planetary gear set and rotates with a speed higher than that of the input shaft. Regenerative torque multiplication is achieved by the special arrangement of this invention resulting in a high torque ratio. During operation, the transmission of torque is accomplished through split mechanical and hydrodynamic paths, thereby improving both the power transmission efficiency, and the responsiveness and smoothness of operation.

  • Patent number: 4138907
Abstract: The operational speed of a fluid drive unit in a hydromechanical transmission is limited by means of an overspeed preventing, one-way clutch establishing a positive drive connection between torque transmitting elements of the hydromechanical transmission. Two power paths are established between the planetary gear unit and the input shaft of the transmission to drive an output shaft at a variable drive ratio controlled by a variable displacement type of fluid drive unit. One of the power paths is established through fixed ratio gearing while the other power path is established through the fluid drive units while operating within a speed ratio range limited by the one-way clutch.

  • Patent number: 4137798
Abstract: Apparatus for rotating a driven shaft in the same direction at two different speeds upon rotation of a drive shaft in respective, opposed directions. The apparatus includes a sun gear on the drive shaft, a ring gear on the driven shaft, a planet carrier rotatably mounted on the drive shaft, adjacent to the sun gear, one or more planetary gears rotatably mounted on the planet carrier and in mesh with the sun and ring gears. An over-running clutch locks the planet carrier to the drive shaft when the latter rotates in one direction to thereby lock the planetary gears to the sun and ring gears to cause rotation of the ring gear and the driven shaft in a first direction at a first speed. A sprag prevents rotation of the planet carrier relative to a fixed support when the drive shaft rotates in the opposite direction to thereby allow rotation of the planetary gears about fixed axes to rotate the ring gear and thereby the driven shaft in the first direction at a second speed.
