  • Patent number: 4117747
Abstract: An automatic gearbox has a planetary gear system and fluid pressure operated friction elements which are operable to act on the gear system to change the gear ratios thereof. Operation of the friction elements is controlled by electronic circuits on the basis of electrical signals indicative of vehicle speed and throttle opening. A manually operable switch is provided for selecting reverse gear and for providing manual overriding signals for the selection of forward gears. The electronic circuits are so arranged that, when a gear is selected manually, operation of the friction elements associated with the gear or gears higher than the selected gear is not carried out until vehicle speeds at least equal to the vehicle speeds at which the said friction elements are operated at full throttle opening in the automatic mode of operation.

  • Patent number: 4116082
Abstract: A compact manual transmission includes an input shaft and plural countershafts, one of which serves as the output shaft and the other of which serves both as a countershaft for obtaining a low reduction ratio forward drive and as a reverse idler shaft. Low forward drive is through a gear train comprising three reduction ratio gear sets controlled by a single clutch. Reverse drive is through two reduction ratio gear sets controlled by a single clutch. The transmission is particularly adaptable for use in an automotive vehicle having a transversely mounted engine. • Patent number: 4112788
Abstract: A torque transmission device whereby eccentric drive rollers engage a raceway disposed within a driven wheel. The wheel's rim has a rolling surface with teeth disposed adjacent to this surface. The wheel's rolling surface engages a fixed surrounding raceway and the wheel's teeth engage a fixed ring of teeth that are adjacent to the raceway. The drive rollers engage the wheel's raceway in a manner that transmits torque to the wheel with leverage thereby substantially reducing the force transmitted to the teeth.

  • Patent number: 4104931
Abstract: A positive locking differential that functions to compensate for the difference in driving wheel travel which occurs when turning or traveling over uneven ground, while at the same time functioning to prevent wheel-slip when one wheel looses traction. The differential comprises a spider-center cam assembly having four trunnions projecting radially from a center ring on each side of which is located a plurality of fixed driving clutch teeth. The internal diameter of the spider mounts the center cam in such a manner that the same may be rotated a limited, predetermined distance. The center cam is symmetric having cam lifts on each side which include rounded surfaces that provide anti-friction ramps for disengaging driven clutch members mounted on each side of the spider and center cam assembly. The driven clutch members have clutch teeth which correspond to the clutch teeth on the spider and through which a driving torque is transmitted.

  • Patent number: 4102222
Abstract: A control system changes the gear ratio in an automatic transmission when engine torque is transferred from one member to another member of a three member planetary gear set. This transfer is accomplished through friction elements engaged and released by hydraulic pressure, without the use of one-way clutches. A closed loop electrical circuit is completed between a transducer, which provides an electrical signal related to the output torque of the transmission, and a pair of control valves, to vary the pressure applied by each control valve. A circuit for computing reaction torque is coupled between the transducer and a logic control circuit, which provides logic command signals for controlling operation of components in the closed loop circuit. The closed loop circuit includes two pulse width modulation circuits for regulating operation of the two control valves.

  • Patent number: 4098145
Abstract: The invention contemplates an improved mechanical traction drive providing a single control whereby a desired range of speed ratios between input and output shafts is selectively available, without requiring clutch connection to the power source, such as an internal-combustion engine. The transmission involves a combination of completely mechanical friction-roller and meshing-gear planetary systems which are connected at all times, whether the single control is operated to call for a forward drive, a stop or a reverse drive of the output shaft. For the particular disclosed form, provision is made for automatic downshifting reaction to increasing load, and major axial-reaction forces are self-contained by rotating mechanism, thus (a) avoiding substantial axial force components on main-bearings of the mechanism, and (b) reducing to very small magnitudes the requisite force for selective control actuation.
