  • Patent number: 4048871
Abstract: A power transmission system for small vehicles or machinery having a principal forward speed and variable forward and reverse speeds capable of providing lower variable speeds is disclosed. The transmission system includes a primary transmission and a secondary transmission connected in series. In one of three positions, the two transmission housings and primary output shaft are keyed together. This results in a non-variable output, principal forward speed with a 1 to 1 ratio between the speed at which the engine rotates the primary transmission housing and the speed of the output shaft. In a second setting, the secondary transmission housing is keyed only to the output shaft from the primary transmission. This results in a forward speed having a variable output depending upon the load placed on the input shaft to the primary transmission. In a third position, the housings for the primary and secondary transmissions and the output shaft from the primary transmission are each disengaged from each other.

  • Patent number: 4046033
Abstract: A control apparatus for automatic transmissions of the type having an output shaft of an engine connected to an input shaft of a speed-change gear mechanism through a torque converter. A frictional engagement device is disposed in parallel to the torque converter for directly linking the output shaft to the input shaft and mechanically transmitting the engine power when it is actuated. The control apparatus automatically and hydraulically controls both the selective actuation of the speed-change gear mechanism and the selective actuation of the direct-linkage frictional engagement device through an arrangement of a governor valve, throttle valve, shift valve, pressure-reducing device, operation element, direct-linkage valve and an interlock valve. The direct-linkage valve introduces pressure to the interlock valve in response to a predetermined relationship of pressures generated by the throttle and governor valves, particularly during a relatively high speed drive condition of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4044632
Abstract: The present invention applies to large and powerful geared mixer drives and aerators and broadly to geared reduction drives with a plurality of reducing steps, where the axis of an electric motor is offset from the axis of the power consumer and disposed at right angles to said axis. The drive of a single motor is split up into two channels that apply power to a common final drive gear in two diametrically opposite places. Means are provided to equalize the loads in both places, at all loads. Thus a turning moment is exerted rather than a one-sided driving load. It balances the turning moment of the power consumer directly and with least deflections. It also drastically reduces the size and weight of the drive.

  • Patent number: 4043223
Abstract: An overdrive mechanism disposed between a torque converter and change gear mechanism of an automatic transmission and responsive to the change gear mechanism. An input shaft to the change gear mechanism consists of two sections that are coupled by a clutch during normal power transmission. The driving section of the input shaft is connected to the turbine runner of the torque converter. A planetary gear train has a carrier operatively responsive to the pump impeller of the torque converter and a sun gear controlled by an overdrive brake. When the brake locks the sun gear against rotation during overdrive, the ring gear of the planetary gear train is rotated by the pump impeller and drives the second section of the input shaft through the clutch. The clutch is disengaged from the driving section of the input shaft during overdrive, thus by-passing power transmission from the turbine runner of the torque converter to the changer gear mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4041809
Abstract: The transmission arrangement includes first and second hydraulically activatable units. When the first and second units are activated and unactivated, respectively, the arrangement exhibits a first transmission ratio. When the first and second units are unactivated and activated, respectively, the arrangement exhibits a second transmission ratio. Electrically controllable first and second valves each connect an associated unit to a source of hydraulic fluid. A transmission-ratio changeover is effected by causing the valves to undergo opposite changes of energization state. Each valve has its own time-delay stage. Upon receipt of a signal commanding a transmission-ratio changeover, each time-delay stage delays the initiation of the change of energization state of the associated valve by a respective time-delay interval.

  • Patent number: 4040271
Abstract: Viscous shear couplings for controlling the action of an interaxle or interwheel differential gear in a vehicle transmission are described. The couplings comprise a pack of interleaved annular plates which are free to float axially in an annular enclosure containing a viscous liquid. The enclosure incorporates a spring-loaded piston shiftable to vary the enclosure volume. The quantity of viscous liquid, in the range 85% to 100% of the minimum volume at ambient temperature, and the spring strength are chosen to give a predetermined pressure build-up within the enclosure with rise in temperature during shearing of the viscous liquid to tailor the torque-transmitting characteristics of the coupling to particular needs.
