  • Patent number: 9017792
Abstract: A tri-barrier ceramic coating system is provided having a base thermal barrier layer, an intermediate CMAS barrier layer, and a top erosion barrier layer, and the method of applying such a coating system to a substrate. The base layer has a typical columnar structure with inter-columnar gaps and intra-columnar micro-pores that provides the stress tolerance during thermal cycles. The intermediate CMAS barrier layer has the fiber-like columns with inter-columnar nano-pores and a grid structure on the bottom of the layer. The fine structured intermediate layer covers the gaps between the columns of the base layer and will block CMAS infiltration effectively. The top erosion resistant layer contains wider TBC columns with narrow inter-columnar gaps and a modified cauliflower-like TBC head that provides erosion resistance for the underlying layers. The tri-barrier coating microstructure will further reduce the thermal conductivity as comparing to the conventional single layer system.

  • Patent number: 8734938
Abstract: A sensor element is formed by cutting a laminated body and heating with the cutting taking place in a state where a difference in resistance on sides of a cutting component is as small as possible. That is, a uniform cutting is where resistance added to both sides of the cutting component is substantially the same. When uniform cutting cannot be performed, a nonuniform cutting in a state where resistance added to both sides of the cutting component is different is performed. Consequently, a surface perpendicular to a longitudinal direction of the sensor element is trapezoidal.

  • Patent number: 8586176
Abstract: A plurality of reversible active composite materials are disclosed, including composites based on a shape memory alloy member (SMA) and a shape memory polymer member (SMP), as well as composites based on two different SMP members. Each different member (SMA or SMP) will be trained to remember a specific shape at a specific temperature. Where two different SMP members are employed, the members exhibit different glass transition temperatures. Such composite materials can be implemented in many form factors, including two generally planar members, a single generally planar SMP member with SMA fibers distributed throughout the SMP, and a SMA fiber/wire coated with a SMP coating. In particular, the SMA fiber/wire coated with a SMP layer can be used to form helical coils that can be used in paired hinges to achieve reversible bending of a structure into which such paired hinges are incorporated.
