  • Patent number: 4108582
Abstract: A gear pump or motor comprises a tubular casing having an internal shoulder and an inlet and outlet for working fluid. A pair of meshing gearwheels are each mounted in the casing between a pair of rigid bearings which are disposed one on either side of the shoulder adjacent respective end plates closing the ends of the casing. Screws passing through the shoulder are provided for clamping the shoulder between the bearings and end plates. In an unclamped condition of the shoulder, the difference between the axial lengths of the shoulder and the gearwheels is greater than a predetermined operating clearance between the gearwheels and the bearings. In a clamped condition of the shoulder in the normal operating conditions of the pump or motor, the shoulder is resiliently deformed to reduce the said difference to a value at most equal to the predetermined clearance.

  • Patent number: 4104010
Abstract: A rotor is eccentrically mounted in a bore of a housing and formed with radial slots in which vanes are slidably retained. The vanes partition the bore into a plurality of fluid chambers which increase in volume in an inlet portion of the bore and decrease in volume in an outlet portion of the bore upon rotation of the rotor. An inlet opens into the inlet portion of the bore and an outlet leads from the outlet portion of the bore. An oil sump provided at the bottom of the housing is connected to the outlet and pressurized thereby. An end plate of the housing is formed with a semi-annular high pressure oil groove in the outlet portion of the bore and a semi-annular low pressure oil groove in the low pressure portion of the bore which communicate with the slots radially inwardly of the vanes so that oil in the slots urges the vanes into sealing engagement with the wall of the bore.

  • Patent number: 4102614
Abstract: A machine for generating motion is constructed like an epicyclic gear, with the intermediate gears mounted on a cylindrical core between the inner and outer gears. The intermediate gears are alternately axially offset and the core provides circumferential undulating guides for pistons that slide in the inner and outer gear teeth so that they pass over and under the intermediate gears. The pistons and intermediate gears divide the space between inner and outer gears into separate chambers to which pressure fluid can be selectively admitted to achieve rotation.

  • Patent number: 4097204
Abstract: An internal-external gear pump wherein the fluid displacement thereof is variable. The internal gear is rotatably driven by a drive shaft about a fixed axis and the external gear is rotatably driven by the internal gear about a controlled movable axis eccentric to the fixed axis. Movement of the external gear axis causes the eccentricity between the internal and external gear axes to vary, thereby resulting in a change in the depth of gear tooth mesh such that the volume of fluid displaced by the meshing teeth is varied. The position of the external gear axis is established by a control ring which rotatably supports the external gear, and is mounted in a stationary housing so as to be rotatably positionable within arcuate limits about a fixed axis eccentric to both the axes of the internal and external gears.

  • Patent number: 4092935
Abstract: A process and apparatus for the thermal destruction of solid fuel material in a gravity-type multiple hearth furnace having groups of two or more superimposed hearths. Solid fuel is fed to the upper hearth of each group of hearths. Auxiliary fuel is selectively burned in the lower hearth of each group of hearths to maintain the discharge temperature of the exhaust gas flowing from each said upper hearth above the ignition temperature of said gases so that each group of hearths is operated as a combined drying and burning zone. Preheated air for combustion is introduced into the lower hearth of the lowermost group of hearths so that oxygen available for combustion increases as the solid fuel moves downwardly. Ash is removed from the lower hearth of at least the lowermost group of hearths.

  • Patent number: 4087216
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for counterbalancing the high pressure forces normally generated in the high pressure fluid region of a rotary pump or motor and exerted against the rotating structure of the pump or motor. By this method and apparatus a portion of the fluid in the high pressure region of the pump housing is transported to a region of the housing interior adjacent to, but out of communication with the low pressure fluid region. This transported high pressure fluid is directed against the rotating structure in the direction of the high pressure fluid region. Consequently, the rotating structure of the pump or motor is less subject to distortion or displacement due to forces generated by fluid in the housing's high pressure fluid region.
