  • Patent number: 4008017
Abstract: Seals for providing sealing contact between the rotary piston and the apexes of the casing of a rotary type combustion engine, compressor, or pump for sealing the several pressure chambers, one from the other or others, during operation. The seals are disposed in radially formed slots at each apex of the housing and are so constructed to permit pressure in the chamber being pressured to be communicated to the rear side of the seal, or the side opposite that which makes sealing contact with the rotary piston, so that such pressure acting on the rear side may assist the spring normally acting against the same side in forcing the seal against the rotary piston with greater pressure and thereby provide a better sealing effect.

  • Patent number: 3999904
Abstract: An engine is disclosed in which a piston is mounted to orbit in a circular path within a working chamber for use as a fluid pump or motor. The working chamber includes a pair of juxtaposed cylindrical chambers which are interconnected by an arcuate chamber, with inlet and outlet ports opening into the cylindrical chambers. The walls of the cylindrical chambers are formed with recesses for preventing hydraulic lock-up and vacuum formation. The piston includes a pair of spaced-apart crank ends which carry an arcuate mid-span as the principal displacement element. A drive train conjointly moves the crank ends in circular paths within the cylindrical chambers which in turn gyrates the mid-span in a circular orbit within the arcuate chamber. The working volumes within the engine successively expand and contract for inducting fluid through either port, depending upon the direction of gyration, and for exhausting the fluid through the other port.

  • Patent number: 3989417
Abstract: An apparatus for producing mechanical energy utilizing the sun's rays is disclosed. The apparatus includes a continuously rotating structure having a plurality of thermally actuated pump units, consisting of a temperature sensitive cell and a piston assembly, mounted thereon. A focusing means concentrates solar rays on a number of the cells causing the expansion of material contained in each cell, resulting in the extension of a piston rod, the compression of a cylinder within the piston assembly and the transfer of fluid contained therein to a high pressure accumulator for operating hydraulic motors or the like. When rotated from under the focusing means, the cell cools resulting in a decrease in volume of the expansible material and a retraction of the piston rod causing fluid to enter the piston assembly from a reservoir.

  • Patent number: 3988083
Abstract: The present invention relates to a non-contact type vane pump adapted to prevent the generation of heat due to direct contact between the outer edges of the rotatively driven vanes of the vane pump and the inner surface of the pump casing. The principle arrangement resides in this that the extent to which the vanes rotating under the action of centrifugal force extend radially during operation is suppressed by guide members of less frictional loss disposed in a region adjacent to the center where the peripheral speed is minimum. Non-contact type vane pumps having sub-arrangements based on said principal arrangement are also provided. Advantages and details of such arrangements will be made clear.
