  • Patent number: 4401076
Abstract: A method and a system are disclosed for controlling the amount and advance of fuel injection of a diesel engine using an injection pump of the type which defines the fuel supply period and the compression period, alternately, in synchronism with explosion-exhaustion and intake-compression strokes of each cylinder of the engine, and includes first and second pressure chambers to be supplied with fuel through first and second electromagnetic valves, respectively, during the fuel supply period, and the fuel in the amount equivalent to the fuel amount supplied to said second pressure chamber being injected into the cylinder at an injection timing determined from the total amount of the fuel supplied to said first and second pressure chambers. The open time intervals of the first and second electromagnetic valves are determined from the fuel amount to be injected into each cylinder and the injection timing advance which are determined in accordance with the engine operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 4398518
Abstract: A fuel injection apparatus for internal combustion engines is proposed (FIG. 1), in which the onset and end of injection are determined by a hydraulically actuated control slide. The injection pumps of the apparatus, which are preferably combined with an injection nozzle to make a pump/nozzle unit, having a central magnetic valve assembly comprising two magnetic valves switched hydraulically in parallel, which valve assembly is inserted in a connection between a control pressure line, which can be placed under control pressure (P.sub.S) from a source of control fuel, and a low-pressure line which is under supply pressure (P.sub.V). In order to initiate the onset of injection, the control slide is placed under control pressure (P.sub.S) by the valve assembly via a distributor apparatus and closes an overflow channel leading out of the pump work chamber. In order to control the end of the injection, the control slide, during its return stroke, relieves this overflow channel toward a low-pressure line.

  • Patent number: 4398519
Abstract: A fuel injection apparatus for internal combustion engines is proposed in which the onset and end of injection are determined by a hydraulically actuated control slide. The injection pumps of the apparatus, which are preferably combined with an injection nozzle to make a pump/nozzle unit have a central control pressure pump supplied with fuel by a supply pump. The control pressure pump creates a control pressure (p.sub.S) which is a multiple increase in comparison to the supply pressure (p.sub.V) of the supply pump and actuates the control slide. Each control slide is placed under control pressure (p.sub.S) to initiate the onset of injection via a control line which is separated from the filling lines of the injection pump and closes an overflow channel which leads away from the pump work chamber. At the end of injection the control slide again relieves this overflow channel to a supply line during its return stroke.

  • Patent number: 4397284
Abstract: A distribution type fuel injection pump for use in a fuel injection combustion engine comprising a plunger capable of moving reciprocally along its axis and simultaneously rotating about its axis and a couple of members forming a cam mechanism having a first cam member and a second cam member. The first cam member is mounted on the plunger and the second cam member is mounted on a housing rotatably about its axis. The couple of cam members cause the plunger to reciprocally move while the plunger is rotating. The angular position of the second cam member about its axis can be controlled by a fuel injection timing control means in accordance with the engine speed. The second cam member can also turn about its axis so as to be adjusted in its angular position by a fuel injection timing adjustment when a selected operating condition of the engine, for example the engine start, is carried out.

  • Patent number: 4395987
Abstract: A distribution type fuel injection apparatus has a fuel injection pump having a solenoid valve for controlling pressure of a high-pressure chamber of the apparatus. The solenoid valve is actuated or deactuated at the optimum time for fuel injection end or beginning by a control signal produced by a circuit for computing the optimum timing in accordance with the condition of engine operation. Thus, precise control of injection timing or injection amount injected can be attained by electronic control without a complex mechanical structure.

  • Patent number: 4394856
Abstract: A compression operated diesel fuel injector, for use with an internal combustion engine, is provided with a compression operated piston that is associated with a pump cylinder and plunger to effect pressurization of fuel for discharge from the injector, the piston also defining with the associate injector housing a fuel control chamber. A solenoid actuated valve is operatively positioned to normally block the return flow of fuel from the fuel control chamber to the fuel reservoir for the engine and, a variable flow orifice means is operatively positioned downstream of this valve to control the return fuel flow pressure as a function of engine speed and load to thus regulate the return flow of fuel from the control chamber so as to thereby control engine compression operation of the piston and, accordingly, to correspondingly regulate the rate of fuel injection from the fuel injector.

  • Patent number: 4393846
Abstract: A fuel pumping apparatus includes an injection pump to which fuel is supplied through an adjustable throttle and which includes a fluid pressure operable device for controlling the timing of delivery of fuel. In order to accurately control the timing in accordance with the speed and the amount of fuel supplied to the engine a transducer is provided to sense the throttle position and a further transducer to measure the pressure upstream of the throttle. The signals from these transducers together with an engine speed signal are supplied to a circuit which computes or on the basis of stored information, provides a fuel quantity signal. The fuel quantity signal is supplied to a further circuit together with a speed signal which produces a desired timing signal. This signal is utilized to control the pressure applied to the device.

  • Patent number: 4392837
Abstract: A flexible coupling for drivingly connecting two rotatable shafts or the like, and for use in applications where torque is transmitted only in one direction of rotation or where the torque transmitted in one direction of rotation is significantly greater than the torque transmitted in the other direction of rotation, includes a flex member consisting of four elongated flex elements fixedly joined together in a unitary rectangular arrangement. The two elements positioned on opposite sides of the rectangular arrangement are of substantially rectangular cross-sectional shape along a major portion of element length, and the elements of one such pair are thicker than the elements of the other pair. The flex member is connected between the two rotatable shafts in a manner which causes the thicker elements to be in compression and the thinner elements to be in tension during torque transmission in the favored direction.

  • Patent number: 4392469
Abstract: A regulator shaft, rotary centrifugal weights, and a governor member which is slidable on the regulator shaft, are arranged in a pressurized, fuel-filled inner chamber of a fuel injection apparatus. The centrifugal weights engage regulator springs via the governor member and a control sleeve. The governor member is closed adjacent the free end of the regulator shaft except for a throttle opening for communication with the inner chamber. The governor member is provided with a work chamber, one extremity of which is limited by the regulator shaft. A conduit leading to a fuel tank communicates with the work chamber. A magnetic valve connected to an electronic control device for control of the fuel flow is provided in the conduit. Opening the magnetic valve causes a pressure drop in the work chamber which in turn causes the governor member to press against the centrifugal weights, thus enhancing the fuel injection quantity so as to reduce deviations from those desired and pre-set.

  • Patent number: 4391252
Abstract: A fuel injection system for supercharged internal combustion engines is proposed, which serves to meter a quantity of fuel adapted to the quantity of air aspirated by the engine and also serves to regulate the fuel-air mixture in accordance with operating characteristics of the engine. The fuel injection system includes an air flow rate member, the restoring force of which is generated by means of pressure fluid in a control pressure line. The pressure of the pressure fluid in the control pressure line is variable in accordance with at least one pressure control valve, by means of which the pressure in the control line and thus the restoring force exerted upon the air flow rate member, which actuates a control slide of a metering and distribution valve assembly, can be reduced when the intake tube pressure downstream of a compressor increases. The result is that an undesirable leaning down of the fuel-air mixture caused by the error in air density can be corrected.
