  • Patent number: 5910956
Abstract: A method for generating a random time interval suited for use in defining re-transmission time intervals so as to avoid communication contention utilizes at least one external seed and a plurality of linear maximal sequences. According to one embodiment, a first seed is provided and a first linear maximal sequence is initialized therewith. A second seed is generated via cooperation of the first linear maximal sequence and the external signal. At least one second linear maximal sequence is initialized with the second seed. A new time interval is started when the second linear maximal sequence sequences to a predetermined value.

  • Patent number: 5909430
Abstract: An ATM switched network has an ATM switch, an address server, and a plurality of nodes connected through virtual connections established by the ATM switch. When a node fails and is replaced, the ATM switch recognizes the installation of the node and notifies the address server. The address server selects an ATM address for the replacement node and sends the ATM address and an Internet Protocol (IP) address to the node. The node responds by requesting configuration data, which the address server downloads to the node. Thereafter, the node may initialize its communication interfaces within the ATM network. The address server also assigns ATM and IP addresses to network nodes following power-up of the network. Nodes are assigned an ATM address and an IP address by the address server, thereby eliminating the need to configure nodes with addressing information during manufacture or installation.

  • Patent number: 5905711
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the data transfer rates of data sources in an asynchronous transfer mode-based network utilizing intelligent marking to identify those data sources with a data transfer rate exceeding a marking threshold and to direct those thus-identified data sources to reduce their data transfer rates, and to identify those data sources with a data transfer rate lower than a marking threshold and to direct those thus-identified data sources to increase their data transfer rates when the maximum data transfer rate at a communications switch exceeds a first threshold When the maximum data transfer rate at the communications switch exceeds a second thresholds directing all data sources to reduce their data transfer rates. The first and the second thresholds are based on a congestion indicator of available bit rate traffic stored in a buffer in the communications switch.

  • Patent number: 5903564
Abstract: An apparatus and technique for facilitating mapping of a Multicast Circuit Identifier ("MID") to a Local Circuit Identifiers ("CID") is disclosed. Table entries for such mapping can be disposed in non-contiguous memory locations. A pointer is employed in ca h entry to indicate the location of any subsequent memory location associated with the MID. CIDs and associated memory locations are allocated only for ports that participate in a connection. To implement the apparatus and technique a first table provides an index into a second table based upon the MID. The second table includes entries having a port identification field, a pointer field and a CID field. The CID field indicates the CID associated with the port indicated by the port identification field. The CID is written to the header of the copy of the cell to be transmitted to the indicated port.

  • Patent number: 5903553
Abstract: A wireless communication system includes a repeater and a terminal device. The terminal device is connected to the repeater via a wireless communication channel. The terminal device includes a first section for converting a first electric signal into a first wireless signal, and transmitting the first wireless signal toward the repeater along the wireless communication channel. The terminal device includes a second section for receiving a second wireless signal from the repeater via the wireless communication channel, and converting the second wireless signal into a second electric signal. The terminal device includes a third section for deciding whether or not the first electric signal and the second electric signal are equal to each other to detect whether or not a signal collision occurs on the wireless communication channel.

  • Patent number: 5889776
Abstract: A physical switch system employing a N:M switch circuit, coupled with a layer 2 switch at one end and with a network interface at the other end, for data network system is disclosed. The N:M switch comprises N number of ports on one side and M number of ports on the other side, wherein N and M are not necessarily the same. Based on the addresses describing each of the ports, the N:M switch is capable of establishing electronic links between the ports on both sides and further disengaging the links therebetween upon detecting the completion of data transmission. The disclosed switch system provides an efficient switching mechanism of rescalabitity and modularity in network switch systems.

  • Patent number: 5886984
Abstract: A method and system are provided for calculating the total service capacity for multimedia traffic under aggregate traffic conditions within a shared transmission medium, such as an ATM network. A total number of different types of telecommunication traffic is specified by the network operator or network designer. Each different type of network telecommunication traffic is referred to as a service. Next, each week is partitioned into several busy periods. This partitioning is provided by the network operator and may include multiple days, for example: Monday-Friday; and, Saturday-Sunday. Thereafter, for each busy day described above, the day is further partitioned into several busy periods, each period discernible from a previous period by the level of activity expected within the network at that time. For example, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; and, 5:00 p.m.-7:00 a.m. Once again, this information is provided by the network operator or network designer.

  • Patent number: 5864541
Abstract: A method and system are provided for calculating the simultaneous service capacity for multimedia traffic under aggregate traffic conditions within a shared transmission medium, such as an ATM network. A total number of different traffic services as well as a specification of the peak rate, average idle sojourn time and an average burst sojourn time are determined, either based upon available standards or calculated based upon models of the traffic services. The total available system bandwidth is specified by a network operator/designer. The number and size of queues utilized for receiving packetized telecommunication traffic within the network are also specified. The length and time of a busy period specified by the network operator/designer, a maximum acceptable packet loss rate and the probability that a user will access the network during the busy period are also specified.

  • Patent number: 5854785
Abstract: A wireless communication device (100) provides for soft handoff in a communication system employing CDMA by providing information on pilot identities to the base station represented by the active pilot in the access probe (215), and possibly in successive access probes. The system infrastructure allocates base stations according to the pilot identities (310) and transmits messages over the Paging Channels of the base station of the active pilot and neighboring base stations represented by the pilot identities (315). Thus, the wireless communication device can simultaneously demodulate the Paging Channel of multiple base stations while in the System Access State of CDMA.

  • Patent number: 5838687
Abstract: The present invention relates to a slot reuse method and arrangement for increasement of the throughput in a DTM (Dynamic Synchronous Transfer Mode) network. The slot reuse according to the invention comprises extending the DTM block token format to include parameters describing the segment(s) between source and destination node, reserving block token capacity only on the segment(s) between source and destination node, and enabling simultaneous transmissions in the same slot over disjointed segments of the network. The slot reuse can also comprise merging two or more segment-consecutive tokens, representing the same slot range, into a single token when existing in the free pool of a node.
