  • Patent number: 6198750
Abstract: An arrangement for concentrating broadband data from a plurality of CPEs (customer premises equipments) for transmission over a link to an ATM network. Because each CPE can generate data at the full rate of the link, it is necessary to detect peaks of bursty traffic from a CPE user quickly and to limit the rate of data transmission whenever the capacity of the link may be exceeded. This is accomplished first by allowing the transmission of certain classes of traffic (lower priority) only when a token to permit transmission has been accumulated in the CPE, and second, by having a FIFO buffer for each user and detecting whenever the FIFO buffer has accumulated more than n cells; when this condition is detected, no more tokens are sent back to the user. The user is not allowed to accumulate more than m tokens. Advantageously, this arrangement allows essentially the full bandwidth of the link to the ATM network to be utilized by a timely throttling of bursts of traffic when they cannot be accommodated.

  • Patent number: 6169744
Abstract: A Medium Access Control (“MAC”) Layer protocol and a method for contention resolution using the protocol is provided for networks with multiple priority traffic. The protocol is used where a physical layer connected to a transmission medium uses a carrier modulation scheme with multiple frequencies. Stations on the network that desire access to the transmission medium use a carrier modulation scheme with multiple frequencies. Stations that desire access simultaneously transmit a single frequency selected at random from a set of physical layer frequencies during an open-contention-interval. At the same time, the stations listen to a combined frequency signal and analyzes it for frequency content. The station whose own frequency matches the highest frequency signal in the combined signal gains access to a transmission medium. In the event of a collision, a restricted-contention-interval is used only for the colliding stations.

  • Patent number: 6157629
Abstract: In a method of automatically changing a frequency in a CDMA mobile communication system where multiple frequencies are assigned to a base transceiver station, states of an RFC, ACC, and SIC are periodically checked thus parts of them where errors are detected are cut off, a frequency processed by the part having the error is detected and excluded from overhead data, and, when the frequency which is processed by the part having the error is a fundamental frequency, other part is made to take charge of the fundamental frequency. Reversely, parts which are restored from an error state to a normal state are turned "ON", and the restored part is made to process the fundamental frequency as was before and a part which currently processes the fundamental frequency is made to process its original frequency when the restored part is one for the fundamental frequency.

  • Patent number: 6157634
Abstract: A method and a system for controlling a dynamic channel reconfiguration of an access facility in which a first bit stream is connected on a first channel to a second channel. A status associated with the first bit stream is queried. In response to the query, status information, which includes a configuration map status, is received for the first bit stream. The configuration map status for the first bit stream is then stored in a first memory area. A command is received for disconnecting the first bit stream on the first channel from the second channel, and the first channel is disconnected from the second channel. A set of parameters associated with the first channel are then groomed to match a set of parameters associated with the third channel. A command is received for connecting a second bit stream on the first channel to a third channel. A configuration status for the second bit stream is stored in a second memory area.

  • Patent number: 6130891
Abstract: An integrated multiport switch having an interface connected between the MAC of each port and a MIB report bus, whereby MIB reports for the plurality of switch ports are transmitted individually to a switch MIB engine, fed by the MIB report bus, on a time shared basis. The interface prioritizes transmission of the MIB reports to the MIB engine in accordance with the transmission characteristics associated with the respective ports. A FIFO storage buffer in interface temporarily holds MIB report data, received from lower priority ports on a time-slot allotted sequence synchronized to a clock signal, during periods in which MIB report data from higher priority ports are given preference for output to the MIB report bus.

  • Patent number: 6118761
Abstract: A network switch in a full-duplex IEEE 802.3 network includes a data monitor module that monitors data utilization between ports. Upon detection of a congestion condition in an output buffer, the data monitor module determines for each of the remaining network switch ports a traffic contribution relative to the total network traffic received by the one congested network switch port. The network switch includes a rate controller that generates rate control frames for the remaining network switch ports, where each rate control frame specifies a transmission rate for the transmitting network node based on the corresponding traffic contribution by the network node. The outputting of a rate control frame to a network node based on the corresponding traffic contribution optimizes elimination of the congestion condition by prioritizing the generation of rate control frames for the network node most responsible for creating the congestion condition.

  • Patent number: 6115376
Abstract: A method for improving network security in a network that includes a star configured interconnection device such as a repeater, a bridge or a switch, that has a plurality of ports adapted for connection to respective MAC layer devices includes storing authentication data in the star configured interconnection device that maps MAC addresses of end stations in the network to particular ports on the star configured interconnection device. Upon receiving a packet on a particular port, the process involves determining whether the packet carries a source address which the authentication data maps to the particular port. If the packet carries a source address which the authentication data maps to the particular port, then the packet is accepted. If the packet does not carry a source MAC address which the authentication maps to the port, then an authentication protocol is executed on the port to determine whether the MAC address originates from an authorized sender according to the authentication protocol.

  • Patent number: 6111862
Abstract: An echo canceler (10) includes an idle code density detector (12) that measures an idle code density over a period of time. The idle code density detector (12) includes an idle code detector (30) that identifies idle codes and non-idle codes. An idle code integrator (32) increments an idle code count (36) by a first weight factor (38) for each idle code identified by the idle code detector (30). The idle code integrator (32) decrements the idle code count (36) by a second weight factor (40) for each non-idle code identified by the idle code detector (30). A threshold detector (34) continuously compares the idle code count (36) to a threshold value (42). When the idle code count (36) exceeds the threshold value (42), the threshold detector (34) generates a control signal (22) to disable an adaptive filter (14) and a processor (18) of the echo canceler (10).

  • Patent number: 6111867
Abstract: A system implements a method of allocating a mobile communications device, such as a mobile end station, to packet channels, such as packet control channels within a cell. A mobile communications device identifies for access a packet channel by executing an algorithm, such as a hashing algorithm. The mobile communications device then reads a loading message broadcast for that packet channel. If the loading message indicates to the mobile communications device that another packet channel or PCCH should be sought, the mobile communications device tunes to a beacon frequency and reads information for each packet channel or PCCH broadcast at the beacon frequency. The mobile then tunes to a suitable channel. The processing to select a suitable channel is accomplished in the mobile communications device, thereby relieving other system elements, such as the mobile data base station (MDBS) from carrying out that processing and reducing the information traffic on overloaded channels.
