  • Patent number: 4966737
Abstract: A method and a device for manufacturing a powder of amorphous ceramic or metallic particles in a high pressure autoclave. The substance in the liquid state is pressed out of a nozzle (7) upwards in vertical direction. An acoustic levitation field acts on the area in front of the nozzle orifice (12) and an inert cooling gas is made to flow turbulently in this area so that the droplets sprayed out of the nozzle are rapidly cooled and get solidified to grains. The powder can be directly machined by pressing and sintering into objects of the desired shape.

  • Patent number: 4966736
Abstract: A process and apparatus useful for preparing a porous, particulate sulfur by combining a coherent molten sulfur stream with a coherent water stream to provide an aqueous slurry of a porous, particulate sulfur having a uniform particle size distribution. In the process, a molten sulfur stream is passed through a substantially downwardly oriented, rectangular slot to provide a sheet of molten sulfur, and said sheet of molten sulfur is sheared by directing at least one sheet of water thereat, at a velocity and flow rate sufficient to disrupt said sheet of molten sulfur and provide solid sulfur particles having a substantially uniform size. The solid sulfur particles are recovered, as an aqueous slurry thereof, and separated from said slurry by substantially removing the water therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4961891
Abstract: A highly compressible gasket material is formed by fusing two filled sheets of PTFE containing dispersed microballoons to a central unfilled sheet of PTFE which provides tensile strength to the material. The two unfilled sheets each constitute from 20% to 25% of the overall thickness of the gasket material. This method provides a unitary gasket assembly having an overall compressibility of 45% or more, but the thicker unfilled PTFE central area of the assembly provides excellent recovery characteristics and resistance to creep relaxation.

  • Patent number: 4960553
Abstract: An article having non-planar portions, such as a material handling pallet, including a substantially flat deck member and a plurality of hollow leg members projecting integrally from the deck member, is molded as a one-piece unit from a loosely-felted mat formed from a mixture of resinous particle board binder and flake-like wood particles. The leg members are preformed in a separate preform mold or the article forming mold and the mat is deposited on the female die over mold cavities containing the preforms. When the article forming mold is closed, the mat and preforms are compressed into substantially the desired shape and size under temperature and pressure conditions which bond the wood particles of the mat and the preforms together to form a unitary structure.

  • Patent number: 4956128
Abstract: Perfectly spherical, smooth and uniform microcapsules, which may contain living cells, are produced having a diameter less than 700 .mu.m by employing an electrostatic droplet generator. A droplet is suspended from a pointed source, such as a needle, and is charged with high static voltage. A collecting vessel or ring device is charged with opposing polarity and attracts the droplet. When a voltage potential threshold is passed, the droplet moves from the source to the collecting vessel. The voltage pulse height, pulse frequency and length, and extrusion rate of the droplets are adjustable so that predetermined sizes of droplets may be repeatedly generated and collected.

  • Patent number: 4942003
Abstract: A method and apparatus for continuously producing molded member, especially sheets, from a mixture of gypsum and fibrous material. In a first mixing stage, measured-out quantities of gypsum and fibrous material are thoroughly mixed together, with the dry mixture being weighed and subsequently moistened in a second mixing stage by supplying water thereto in conformity to the weight of the dry mixture. The moistened mixture is subsequently dispersed onto a support to form molded members, with the surface of each molded member being additionally moistened, and the latter then being compacted. To achieve higher strength, the mas flow of the gypsum/fibrous material mixture is divided into independent partial mass flows that are dispersed in layers to form the multi-layer molded member, with each partial mass flow forming one of the layers of the molded member.

  • Patent number: 4941948
Abstract: Economical manufacturing of wood powder-molded products becomes possible with the introduction of wood pulp as the binding agent to be used in combination with water. The molded products feature not only high moisture absorbing capability and a unique natural touch of hybrid between wood and paper, but easy and convenient disposability after use. The product can be molded into any shape, but the method would be more suitable for manufacturing small-size pellet products form the practical standpoint to perform drying (dehydration) process. • Patent number: 4940563
Abstract: An article is molded by contacting it with a solid polymer medium, such as an especially low strength unfilled silicone rubber which is solid and able to flow readily. Thermal expansion of the medium or mechanical force is used to create molding pressure and thereby provides a substantially uniform pressure on the article precursor. Various temperature and pressure cycles can be attained; constant high pressures can be maintained on the article precursor during cooldown, optionally aided by flowing of medium to and from a vessel in which the article precursor is being molded. The method is particularly adapted to molding filler or fiber reinforced thermosetting polymer composite articles.
