  • Patent number: 4873594
Abstract: A disk pack spacer ring has formed thereon a plurality of pairs of intercommunicating scoop/pump channels which prevent formation of solid body rotation of air between closely spaced disk surfaces so that the entire space between the disk surfaces is ventilated. A scoop channel angled into the direction of rotation scoops air into the channel, and a intercommunicating pump channel angled away from the direction of rotation pumps the scooped air out in a direction opposite to disk rotation. In one embodiment, the scoop and pump channels are disposed on upper and lower surfaces of the ring and a flow through channel disposed on the inner surface of the ring connects the two.

  • Patent number: 4873592
Abstract: The communications monitor and logger preferably uses reel-to-reel tape recorders to continuously record communications over multiple channels such as multiple telephone lines. Each tape recorder uses a pair of capstans and pinch rollers to move the tape during recording and play-back. The pinch rollers are engaged with the capstans by means of a solenoid through a linkage and spring coupling. The spring is stretched by the solenoid only after the pinch roller makes contact with the capstan, thus reducing the force required from the solenoid. The spring is pre-loaded so as to improve the accuracy with which the force applied to the pinch roller is determined. The solenoid is used to apply force to the spring only when the solenoid plunger approaches its seat, so as to make the most efficient use of the solenoid and minimize its size and electrical power usage.

  • Patent number: 4855853
Abstract: An actuator mechanism for positioning magnetic heads includes arms that support a magnetic recording/reproducing head at one end thereof. Each of the arms is mounted about a shaft and supported for rotation. A coil support member is attached to the end of the arms opposite the head, and is made of a molded resin that integrally covers a voice coil motor used for causing the swinging movement of the arms. The molded resin of the coil support member is a synthetic resin mixed with a powered metal having a known specific gravity and thermal expansion coefficient. Thus, the weight of the synthetic resin can be adjusted to balance a portion including the magnetic heads and the arms with the coil support member in relation to the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4849841
Abstract: A magnetic core structure for a transducer head of the type used in digital data storage devices is wider on one side of the magnetic gap (e.g., the write side) than it on the other side of the gap (e.g., the read side), to provide "wide write-arrow read" recording and reproducing capabilities. Magnetic flux return during recording (writing) operations is accomplished through the comparatively narrow read core plus additional magnetic closure elements which are disposed alongside, and which magnetically shunt, the read core, such that the overall core structure has basically the same width on each side of the magnetic gap. Improved transducing performance is provided by using additional thickness for such magnetic shunts and recessing the end extremity of the latter adjacent the gap at the face of the head, where the head accesses the magnetic recording media, such that the overall magnetic reluctance of the magnetic returns (i.e., shunts) is lowered but the effective gap width of the head is not changed.
