  • Patent number: 8457660
Abstract: A technique for conserving power in a mobile communication device operative in a wireless communication network is described. The mobile device identifies a condition to change a parameter in the wireless communication network. However, the mobile device delays for a period of time until an expected message used for registration is to be sent to the wireless communication network. The mobile device provides the parameter within the expected message used for registration, and causes the expected message used for registration to be transmitted to the wireless communication network.

  • Patent number: 8452332
Abstract: A femtocell base station includes a transmitter that transmits downlink signals to a mobile station, a receiver that receives uplink signals from the mobile station, a standard transmit pulse-shaping filter, and a narrower transmit pulse-shaping filter that limits the bandwidth of the downlink signals to a greater extent than the standard transmit pulse-shaping filter. The femtocell base station also includes a standard receive pulse-shaping filter and a narrower receive pulse-shaping filter. The femtocell base station is configured to switch between the standard transmit pulse-shaping filter and the narrower transmit pulse-shaping filter, and to switch between the standard receive pulse-shaping filter and the narrower receive pulse-shaping filter. A mobile station may switch from a standard transmit pulse-shaping filter to a narrower transmit pulse-shaping filter to limit uplink interference.

  • Patent number: 8452339
Abstract: A mobile terminal and a method of controlling the same are disclosed. The mobile terminal includes a touch screen displaying at least one item and a scroll bar that receives a first touch signal for renewing at least one of the at least one item and displaying the item, and a controller changing the appearance of the scroll bar when receiving a second touch signal for selecting at least one of the item and moving the selected item to the scroll bar. When a touch signal for moving an item to the scroll bar is input, the display state of the scroll bar is changed, and thus it is possible to easily indicate whether an item is selected without setting an additional region.

  • Patent number: 8452294
Abstract: Downlink traffic channel data rate options and methods of indicating to a wireless terminal a utilized downlink data rate option are described. The downlink traffic channel rate option for a segment is conveyed using an assignment signal and/or a block in the downlink traffic channel segment which is not used for user data. Downlink segment assignment signals in some implementations allocate fewer bits for rate option indication than are required to uniquely identify each option. In some implementations low rate options, e.g., using QPSK, are uniquely identified via assignment signals. Higher rate options, e.g., using QAM16 modulation, are conveyed via the distinct information block in the downlink traffic segment using a first coding/modulation method. Still higher rate options, e.g., using QAM16, QAM64, or QAM256, are conveyed via the information block in the segment using a second coding/modulation method which is applied to the rate option information.

  • Patent number: 8452266
Abstract: A sender-specified courtesy notification scheme to delay notification by a receiving device of the receipt of a data message is disclosed. A sender may specify a notification parameter defining a delay and send the parameter in association with the data message to a recipient. The recipient's receiving device evaluates the parameter and notifies in response. Local notification data defined by the recipient may also be evaluated. Received data messages subject to delayed notification may be hidden by the receiving device or quietly displayed (e.g. as per other received messages) until the expiry of the delay. Notification parameters and data can be formulated as one or more rules which may take into account the current location of the receiving device. A notification delay may be ignored in certain situations depending on recent use of the receiving device.

  • Patent number: 8447314
Abstract: An example method includes receiving data from a femto access point; evaluating resources being used by a macro network in which the femto access point resides; determining whether the femto access point is operating in a constrained bandwidth mode; and reserving particular resources for the femto access point to use for its communications, where the particular resource is allocated from available resources within the macro network. In a more particular embodiment, where those resources refer to spectrum resources, the method includes allocating spectrum resources between femto and macrocellular systems. In other embodiments, the method includes identifying a total throughput associated with the femto access point and one or more macro network cells, where a change in reserving particular frequencies is executed based on determining the total throughput being higher than a current throughput. The data from the femto access point can include path loss data and geolocation data.

  • Patent number: 8447291
Abstract: In an embodiment, a user equipment (UE) determines that a client application has entered a period of transmission inactivity whereby the UE will not be required to transmit data on behalf of the client application. The UE selectively transmits a transmission inactivity notification to an access network (AN) to notify the AN of the transmission inactivity period. The AN receives the transmission inactivity notification and determines to transition the UE from a first state to a second state based at least in part on the received transmission inactivity notification, the second state associated with lower-power consumption of the UE than the first state. The AN sends instructions to the UE to facilitate the transition of the UE from the first state to the second state. In another embodiment, the AN can send instructions to the UE to prohibit the UE from sending transmission inactivity notifications.

  • Patent number: 8442526
Abstract: An application server provides communication services via a packet-switched network to mobile nodes based on their respective registrations in a registry, such as a home subscriber server (HSS) or domain name server (DNS). A registration proxy may be used to effect a registration in the registry on behalf of a mobile node when the mobile node lacks sufficient capability to effect the registration itself. The registration proxy may perform this function after receiving a notification that the mobile node is connected to the packet-switched network and after querying a capabilities server to determine that the mobile node lacks sufficient registration capability. To effect a registration in an HSS, the registration proxy may emulate either a serving call state control function (S-CSCF) or user equipment (UE).

  • Patent number: 8437708
Abstract: A mobile telephone performs communication by transmitting voice, which is inputted by a speaker into a communication apparatus having a floor, via a server, to one or more communication devices of one or more listener(s) having no floor. A transmitter transmits a request signal, which requests an acquisition of a floor, to the server (Step S104) when a predetermined operation is performed by a user (Step S103: YES). A receiver receives both a permission signal, which is transmitted from the server in response to the request signal for permitting the acquisition of a floor, and numerical information, which is transmitted from the server, indicating the number of communication apparatuses of the listener(s) (Step S101 and S106). An informing control subunit performs different informing controls in accordance with the number indicated by the numerical information when the receiver receives the permission signal (Step S107 to S109).

  • Patent number: 8433318
Abstract: In an embodiment, a wireless communications device (WCD) is provisioned with a plurality of subscriber identity modules (SIMs). The WCD determines a first set of bands (BAND1) that is associated with a first SIM and a second set of bands (BAND2) associated with a second SIM. In a first embodiment, the WCD generates a combined band for the first and second SIMs and then scans the combined band to detect a set of target networks for camping in association with at least the first and second SIMs. In a second embodiment, the WCD scans BAND1 to detect a first set of target networks for camping in association with the first SIM, and then excludes, from the BAND2, bands that overlap with BAND1. The WCD then scans the reduced BAND2 to detect to detect a second set of target networks for camping in association with the second SIM.
