  • Patent number: 4161058
Abstract: A steering wheel having a `T` type spoke is attached to a steering column, with an axis of symmetry of steering wheel being angularly biased through an angle y relative to the forward direction of a vehicle, with the direction of the vehicle being stabilized on a stage of a toe-in tester. The vehicle is placed on the stage with the front wheels of the vehicle mounted on drive rollers, and the drive rollers are moved in a manner to place the axes of the drive rollers perpendicular to the axis of the stage as well as to the planes of rotation of the front wheels. Thereby, slide-slipping angles .alpha..sub.R, .alpha..sub.L and camber angles C.sub.NR, C.sub.NL of the right and left front wheels respectively, are determined so as to determine the compensating angle y, according to the equationy=a(.alpha..sub.R +.alpha..sub.L)+b(C.sub.NR -C.sub.NL)+c,wherein a,b,c represent constants determined by the type of vehicle involved.

  • Patent number: 4157693
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a seamless container having a sidewall and an integral end wall with opening means in the integral end wall is disclosed herein. The method contemplates forming at least one substantially closed area of reduced thickness in the end wall to produce a fracturable web that defines an opening means during the conversion of a flat disc to a finished container. In one form, the method contemplates initially forming a shallow cup and then forming the opening means in the end wall of the shallow cup before the cup is converted into a drawn and ironed container. In another form, the opening means is formed while the container end wall is being reformed into its final configuration and in a further version, the end opening means is formed in the end wall after completion of the drawing and ironing process. The finished container includes a reformed end wall that is integral with a circular sidewall of a container and has a fracturable web surrounding a protuberance.

  • Patent number: 4154073
Abstract: An apparatus and method for straightening an elongated workpiece such as a crank shaft is disclosed. At least four measuring devices are disposed along the workpiece for measuring the position of four points on the workpiece relative to an axis extending between the ends of the workpiece. Signals from the measuring devices are converted to curvature signals representing the curvature of each section of the workpiece spanned by a sequence of three of the points, and straightening blows are applied as needed to sections of the workpiece to reduce or remove the curvatures. Subsequently the measuring devices may be employed to measure eccentricity at the four points and further straightening blows can be applied to reduce or remove eccentricity.
