  • Patent number: 4908091
Abstract: A splicing device for packaging webs comprises a dual magazine shiftable between an on-line position and a stand-by position. Both magazines can hold a web. When the web held in the on-line position is exhausted, the magazine is shifted and the web from the stand-by position can be used while the exhausted web is replaced. A joining unit is provided for each magazine to connect the end of an exhausted web with the end of a new web. A cutting unit is positioned at the on-line position for cutting a web in use whereby a new web may be joined thereto in an aligned manner. A feeding unit is provided upstream of the cutting unit and includes a crease wheel for feeding and folding the web. Another cutting unit is provided upstream of the feeding unit for severing the web in desired package lengths. The splicing device enables rapid joining of webs with a minimum of labor.

  • Patent number: 4906313
Abstract: A fusion weld method and assembly for forming a fusion welded joint between abutting pipe sections having the same exterior diameter and having a predetermined melting temperature. The assembly includes an extruded welding collar having an interior surface fabricated to closely receive the inserted pipe sections. A welding sleeve comprising a pair of spaced apart sections is received within collar recesses dimensioned to place the sleeve in flush relationship with the collar interior and immediately adjacent the pipe sections. The welding sleeve sections are located on opposite sides of the pipe ends to isolate the pipe ends from their heating effect, and the connecting lead between the sections is recessed for the same reason. The close fit of the collar and sleeve sections with the pipe sections enables development of internal bonding pressures sufficient to constrain the wire turns of the sleeve sections against thermal drift, and to produce a fusion bond of adequate depth and continuity.

  • Patent number: 4904328
Abstract: Cleaning of thermoset FRP part surfaces to be bonded together is accomplished by the application of low intensity, i.e., 0.05 to 10 watts per cm.sup.2, short wavelength ultraviolet radiation in the range of 170 to 300 nm, for a period of time of usually less than 10 seconds which results in removing an effective amount of material, e.g., from about 1 to about 200 angstroms. The cleaning increases the adhesive potential of FRPs to polyurethane adhesives. Furthermore, FRP polymer surfaces treated by this process retain more adhesive strength after aging at elevated temperature in the presence of moisture than untreated surfaces or surfaces washed with isocyanate in MeCl.sub.2. Epoxy adhesives, also, can be used.

  • Patent number: 4904319
Abstract: A method for splicing beveled edges of a relatively thick tire tread strip free of internal reinforcing cords by ultrasonic energy. A contact face of a sonic welding tool or horn is pressed against the mating overlapping edges of the strip at a cylinder pressure within a range of 20 psi to 80 psi. Ultrasonic energy is applied to the strip while the pressure is applied thereto for a period of between 2 seconds and 12 seconds to heat and soften the rubber compound of the strip without vulcanizing the rubber compound. Pressure is maintained by the tool against the strip after application of the ultrasonic energy for a period of generally between 0.5 to 2.0 seconds to permit the softened compound to cool, set and bond together to form a strong bond between the overlapped edges. The contact face of the horn generally matches the contour of the contacted surface of the strip.

  • Patent number: 4897138
Abstract: A plastic tube is sealed at its end by placing the tube in a pair of spaced apart tube holders having tube receiving pockets. The tube is cut by a cutting device movable into and out of the space between the pockets to form two distinct tube sections which are melted at their ends while in the clamped condition. The cut ends are then brought into contact with each other in a mis-aligned condition offset by one-half the thickness of a tube wall to seal the tube end.

  • Patent number: 4892611
Abstract: A knife wheel assembly suitable for forming a butt splice to join together a web from a new roll of material to a web which is from an expiring roll of material and which is being run, downstream from the expiring roll, under tension along a predetermined path of travel that includes a running web storage means and a press or other web handling means. To form the butt splice, the leading end of the new web is trimmed by moving one knife wheel assembly along the cutting edge of an anvil. The trimmed leading end is held against the anvil, and a piece of tape is applied to the leading end so that a portion of the tape projects downstream from that end. The portion of the expiring web, adjacent to the anvil, is then momentarily stopped, held against the anvil, and trimmed by another knife wheel assembly, along the same cutting edge of the anvil, by movement of the knife wheel assembly across the web, from side-to-side, along the cutting edge of the anvil.

  • Patent number: 4891090
Abstract: This invention is a dispenser for a transfer adhesive. The dispenser is less expensive to manufacture than comparable dispensers of the prior art, because it uses a single reel to perform the functions previously performed by two separate elements. A supply reel feeds a transfer adhesive tape to a take-up reel, which also acts as an applicator roller. The supply and take-up reels are connected together such that rotation of one causes rotation of the other. The user holds the dispenser so that the take-up reel presses firmly against the surface onto which the adhesive is to be applied. As the dispenser is moved along that surface, the take-up reel rotates due to friction, depositing adhesive and causing the supply reel to deliver more tape. The take-up and supply reels can be connected by gears or by a friction drive. If gears are used, they can be of a modified form which allows the take-up reel to drive the supply reel in only one direction.

  • Patent number: 4878982
Abstract: Automatic splicing apparatus includes a first supply containing a first web and a second supply containing a second web. An operable puller is engaged with the first web for withdrawing the same from the first supply and moving the first web along a predetermined path. Cutters are provided for establishing a trailing end on the first web and a leading end on the second web. The presence of the trailing end in the predetermined path is detected and a splicing station is positioned in the path for butt-splicing the leading edge of the second web to the trailing end of the first web in response to detecting the presence of the trailing edge, all without interrupting operation of the puller.

  • Patent number: 4878986
Abstract: A web butt splicing device for splicing two successive webs by butting the following end of a first roll of web and the leading end of a second roll of web against each other. In the web splicing device, the following end of the first roll of web is cut and is then drawn to and held on the hold surface of a butt splicing table. The leading end of the second web roll is cut on a provisionally positioning table to the shape of the following end of the first web roll, is then carried to the butt splicing table by a carrying device and is butt spliced to the following end of the first web roll. Therefore, according to the web splicing device, the webs can be butt spliced together without recourse to a manual operation.
