  • Patent number: 4218906
Abstract: For use in drawing, straightening or stretching a strip of metallic material such as bars, wire, and coils, an apparatus having a pair of elastic ring-equipped roll assemblies which provide a high tensioning force for the strip material held therebetween. As the tensioning force increases, the elastic ring in each of the roll assemblies tends to deform elastically along the circumferential direction of the area which contacts the material, thus increasing the contact area over which the applied force is evenly distributed. By this means the force per unit area can be reduced. The elastic ring is mounted on a control driving shaft by at least three axially rotatable rollers, two of which are arranged to bridge the area of the material contacted by the ring.

  • Patent number: 4218818
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided by which the windings of an armature are cut near their opposite ends and then the windings or coil segments are preferably simultaneously forced from all the armature slots. An apparatus is described for carrying out the process in which after the coils have been cut circumferentially at their opposite ends, the armature and an annular array of stripping blades are brought into engagement so that the blades enter the slots of the armature and force the armature coil segments out of the armature slots. In the preferred embodiment the number of stripping blades coincides with the number of armature slots so that a stripper blade enters each slot and forces the coil segments out of all of the armature slots simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 4218907
Abstract: Bearing assemblies for supporting cylindrical, metal-rolling rolls. The bearings are housed in chock blocks and comprise both radial and thrust bearings. The radial bearings are hemi-cylindrical in shape and extend around approximately one half of the circumference of each roll and make contact with the surface of each roll thereby minimizing lateral roll deflections. A thrust bearing engages a fraction of the surface of at least one end face of each roll. Both the radial and thrust bearings are preferably made of high strength, mechanical graphite or carbon.

  • Patent number: 4218905
Abstract: A rolling mill is disclosed wherein at least two drive rolls are mounted for rotation within a frame, with each drive roll being rotatably supported by at least one backing roll and at least one working roll is mounted for rotation between the drive rolls to define at least one path for passage of material to be rolled. While each working roll is freely rotating, it is rotatably driven by surface friction produced by engagement with at least one of the drive rolls. Each working roll has a diameter less than the diameter of the drive rolls and the mounting position is such that the rotational axis of each working roll is substantially in the same working plane as the rotational axis of the drive rolls while lateral support devices, preferably in the form of hydraulic medium operated piston members, act in engagement with the surface of each working roll to prevent movements of the working roll out of the working plane.

  • Patent number: 4216736
Abstract: An improved scored metal end closure member for composite containers and the like is disclosed, together with the method and apparatus for forming the same, characterized in that a fully or partially removable panel portion is defined in the central panel portion by a scoreline of novel no-fin configuration. The scoreline--which is formed in one horizontal surface of the central panel portion by a truncated wedge score indenting device--has a generally trapezoidal configuration including a flat bottom wall, and generally divergent side walls. The opposite horizontal surface of the central panel portion is stepped to define a region of reduced thickness that extends from a location opposite one edge of the scoreline bottom wall in a direction away from the scoreline. Consequently, during progressive removal of the removable panel portion, the formation of sharp fins or projections on the residual lip remaining on the metal end is avoided.

  • Patent number: 4216350
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a non-fusible web for supporting a plurality of individual solder rings in a predetermined pattern homologous with that of a plurality of solder tails or terminals on which the rings are disposed during a soldering operation. The invention finds particular application in vapor phase condensation soldering. Use of the non-fusible web provides for the simultaneous placement of a large number of individual solder rings, while eliminating the erratic and often detrimental flow characteristics occurring during the instantaneous fusion of patterned chains or strings of solder rings during a condensation soldering operation.

  • Patent number: 4215459
Abstract: A hose built on a non-expanding, non-collapsing mandrel is removed readily lengthwise of and off the mandrel, facilitated by a tube of tough, flexible, thin anti-adherent film disposed in snug fitting contact with the length and girth of the mandrel. The tube is secured to the rigid metal member only close to the end thereof from which the hose is removed. Preferably, the tube is invaginated so as to provide inner and outer slidably juxtaposed walls. The hose built on such mandrel is moved lengthwise together with the outer wall of the tube which slides on the inner wall or the metal member. Lubrication, as by an air film, can facilitate the sliding, and does not contact the hose.

  • Patent number: 4215809
Abstract: The apparatus resurfaces the interior of a tubular pipe or other constant radius cylindrical structure by depositing a series of contiguous, coaxial weld beads on the surface of the structure. The apparatus comprises a chuck for holding and rotating the structure to be resurfaced while a weld head is positioned within a free end of the structure. Upon each 360 degree rotation of the structure, the weld head deposits a continuous circular bead on the structure surface and upon the completion of each bead, the head is moved a predetermined increment axially within the structure whereupon a further bead is drawn in a similar manner.

  • Patent number: 4214464
Abstract: There is provided hydraulically-operated work roll gap control cylinders forming a closed-circuit hydraulic system during rolling, and there are also provided hydraulically-operated backup roll control cylinders to which is connected a rolled product thickness gauge in order to keep constant the work roll gap depending on the pressure existing in the closed-circuit hydraulic system. The apparatus is provided with a hydraulic volume compensator operating in conjunction with the closed-circuit hydraulic system of work roll gap control and is also provided with a logic module connected to said compensator. The volume of fluid contained in the closed-circuit system changes in response to the corrective signal characteristic of a deviation of the strip thickness from the specified gauge.
