  • Patent number: 4255959
Abstract: A thread-forming screw has a point or lead thread portion having a relatively steep entry angle with respect to the screw axis. Adjacent to the point thread is a tapered thread portion of about two to three pitches in axial length. This tapered thread has a shallow entry angle defined by the taper of the maximum diameter of the thread toward the point. This shallow entry angle may be approximately 5.degree. to 8.degree. or equal to about three times the helix angle of the tapered thread. This configuration of the tapered thread results in a balanced action of thread formation and axial in-feed of the screw, resulting in a lower end pressure to initiate the thread-forming in a workpiece. A roll-threading die is contoured to provide ridges and valleys to effect the tapered thread portion.

  • Patent number: 4253322
Abstract: Proposed herein is a method of controlling the thickness of strip stock being rolled between rolls mounted in the roll stand of a mill. An adjusting force is developed to move the supports of one of the rolls, this force exceeding the rolling force and being directed oppositely thereto. Another force prevents the supports of the rolls from moving towards each other and balances the difference between the adjusting force and the rolling force. The factor of proportionality between the movement of the roll supports and the balancing force is in a definite predetermined ratio with the mill stand stiffness factor. The adjusting force is changed in the course of strip stock deformation to compensate for the roll gap variation in proportion to the rolling force according to the following formula:R=k.sub.2 P,whereR denotes the adjusting force causing the roll supports to move;P denotes the rolling force; andk.sub.2 can be found from the equation:k.sub.2 =(k.sub.1 /k)+1;where k.sub.

  • Patent number: 4252009
Abstract: A significantly simplified, rugged attachment is provided for a standard thread rolling machine for quick and easy re-rolling of threaded parts for producing high quality threads. A pressure foot is mounted between an open end of a feed chute and the starting end of a fixed die and is biased toward a confronting movable die for urging a threaded part into mesh with the die surface of the movable die when it is moving toward a rear limit position. Such mesh between the threaded part and movable die is effected before the threaded part is pushed by a starter blade into matched rolling position against a starting end of the fixed die and thereafter the moving die reverses its direction of movement to stroke into a forward limit position to effect precision re-rolling of the previously threaded part to produce a high quality finished part.

  • Patent number: 4248075
Abstract: A procelain on steel printed circuit board includes apertures whose edges are rounded. An aperture is formed by first punching or otherwise making an aperture in the uncoated steel of somewhat larger size than desired, then employing a pair of dies, each with rounded shoulders and a center region of smaller area than the aperture. When the board is placed between the dies with the center region of the latter aligned with an aperture, and pressure is applied to the dies, they engage and round the edges of the aperture. The excess displaced material is forced into space between the original peripheral edge of the aperture and the center region of the dies, thereby decreasing the size of the aperture to the desired size and forming a relatively smooth tapered transition region between opposite surfaces of the board and the outer circumference of the aperture of reduced size. The steel is coated with porcelain after the finished apertures are formed.

  • Patent number: 4248072
Abstract: A method of producing a plate material having a uniform width and a lengthwise thickness variation by imparting plastic deformations to a work by means of widthwise rolling rolls and thicknesswise rolling rolls. The method has the steps of measuring the travelling amounts of the work at the outlet sides of the widthwise rolling rolls and the thicknesswise rolling rolls, continuously changing the roll gap of the widthwise rolling rolls in accordance with the measured travelling amount and a predetermined condition so as to reduce the width of the work at portions of the latter where the width is expected to be increased as a result of the subsequent thicknesswise rolling so that the work after the thicknesswise rolling may have a uniform width, and changing the thickness of the work by continuously changing the roll gap in the thicknesswise rolling rolls in accordance with the measured travelling amount and a predetermined condition. Also, disclosed is an apparatus for carrying out this method.
