Abstract: A system and method for the multiple selection of digitally stored objects and the link-tokens of each selected object for simultaneous presentation and examination of the selected objects with their associated linked objects and information, including organized array presentation for graphical thumbnails that represent the selected objects, as well as sub-framing, which allows intelligent partitioning of information associated with an object.

Abstract: A method and system for providing a user interface for a user to discover and control devices that are currently connected to a network, such that at least one of the devices performs steps, by: (a) obtaining information from one or more of the devices currently connected to the network, the information including device information; and (b) generating a user interface description based at least on the obtained information, the user interface description including a reference associated with the device information of each of the devices currently connected to the network, such that the reference includes at least one link to information contained in the devices currently connected to the network. As such, a user interface can be displayed using the references in the user interface description, for controlling the devices currently connected to the network.

Abstract: The present invention utilizes input handling to provide enter-then-act capability for user inputs. User inputs are received, and a set of one or more secondary applications are executed using the input. A priority rating may then be calculated for each of the one or more secondary applications in the set, the priority rating indicating how pertinent the input was to a corresponding application.

Abstract: A method of creating a graphical user interface having control(s) to direct any task through a computer system is provided. One application of the user interface is for manipulating a time based stream of information to create a presentation. The methods use a layered graphic file that is accessed by an application program to generate the user interface. Each layer of the graphic file contains a control object to an element of the user interface. The control objects are capable of being revised in order to make alterations to the user interface. Other aspects of the present invention relating to the graphical user interface are also described.

Abstract: Tools and techniques are provided for interactive fallout analysis. Checkpoints, such as web pages visited, are defined through user input. As the second and subsequent checkpoints are added, fallout metrics are automatically calculated and displayed for the checkpoint pairs. The user receives fallout information interactively, in response to each change in the sequence of checkpoints, rather than being forced to define all checkpoints and then wait while the fallout metrics are calculated for a batch of checkpoint definition changes. Special coloring or other visualization highlights indicate when the fallout between two checkpoints is total.

Abstract: Providing supplemental information for an individual referenced in an electronic message typically includes receiving an electronic message, examining the electronic message, detecting an identifier for a referenced individual contained in the electronic message, and making supplemental information for the referenced individual available to a recipient of the electronic message. The supplemental information may include information that is in addition to information contained in the electronic message. The supplemental information may include at least one of an e-mail address, a screen name, a telephone number, a facsimile number, and a mailing address, each of which is associated with the referenced individual.

Abstract: A method of presenting digital content to a user on a display of a computing device displaying a continuous stream of digital content in a stream portion of the display, obtaining a current context of the user and the computing device, providing contextual sensitivities for the digital content items, determining a value for the digital content item's relevance of being displayed, calculating a probability of displaying the digital content item based upon the value of the digital content item's relevance of being displayed, performing a random selection of the digital content item based upon the probability of displaying the digital content item, and presenting the digital content item in the stream of digital content being displayed.

Abstract: Techniques for retrieving and displaying multimedia information are provided. A television (TV) interface is provided that displays multimedia information that may be stored in a multimedia document. The interface enables a user to navigate through multimedia information stored on the multimedia document.

Abstract: A system for operating an astronomical observatory made up of astronomical hardware, utilizing a web browser operated by a user, and a web server connected to the observatory, wherein both the control to, and feedback from the observatory are displayed to the user in real time independent of personnel support at the observatory site. The user submits a request to the observatory via the web browser, which displays the status and results of the request. A web server, coupled to the various astronomical hardware, processes the request on behalf of the user and responds with the status and results of the request. The status and/or results are then displayed by the web browser to the user. Requests may be made by the user interactively, or in the form of a script. The system may be used over wide area networks, like the Internet, or any other type of network.

Abstract: A control and its associated programming interface for allowing entry of electronic ink, editing and other manipulation of the ink, and/or recognition of the ink. Ink may be stored in a data structure such as an ink object that permits later retrieval by applications. As is the case with text that may be bolded, underlined, italicized, and the like, the describe control and its programming interface may permit ink information to be manipulated as easily as text, while providing the richness of handwritten ink.

Abstract: There is provided a technique capable of contributing to an improvement in operability and working efficiency. A display control system comprises: an identification information acquisition section 201 that acquires identification information for identifying a user who uses a second device 41; an operation determination section 202 that determines whether there is any uncompleted job among those for which the relevant operation has started in the first device 11; an operation history acquisition section 203 that acquires information concerning the operation history; a setting information acquisition section 204 that acquires setting information concerning the display of an interface screen; and a screen control section 205 that displays the interface screen on the second device 41 and, at the same time, reflects the information acquired by the operation history acquisition section 203 on the interface screen as operation content.

Abstract: An operating system shell has an underlying desktop object that is rendered according to different views. The operating system shell renders on a display screen a desktop graphical user interface with windows, tools, icons, etc. that are within a segment of the desktop object that can be observed (i.e., rendered) from one of the views. In illustrated implementations, the desktop object is of an extent that is greater than can be rendered from a single view. Allowing a user to select or access different views of the desktop object effectively provides an extended desktop that overcomes the fixed and limited display capabilities of conventional operating system shells.

Abstract: A browseable narrative having an architecture that enables browsing, so that a user may progress from a point to any other point in the narrative in a manner determined by the user. The browseable narrative includes a scene or scenes without any predefined beginning, middle, or end which can be displayed in a non-linear manner. The narrative also includes links which interrupt the display of one scene and initiate the display of another. Maps may also exist in the narrative.

Abstract: There is provided a technique concerning a preview display function used when predetermined processing is performed for predetermined data, which contribute to enhancement of user's convenience. A display controller comprises: a control section 205 that displays, based on the information acquired by the relevance information acquisition section 203, the objects to be displayed extracted by the extraction section 202 in the display area 902 and 903, such that objects to be displayed having higher relevance than those to be displayed in the area 903 are displayed in the area 902 and, at the same time, displays the target data acquired by the target data acquisition section 201 inside the area 902 ahead of execution of the predetermined processing to be performed for the target data.

Abstract: A method and system for digital story authoring, viewing and storing is described. A display showing an imported story track, an authored story track, and a story-in-progress track. Each story contains one or more objects. The display also shows a large photo corresponding to a selected object in a story. Furthermore, the display also provides visual forms showing audio clips associated with the large photo displayed. The photo may have more than one associated audio clips. Control buttons are available to navigate among the three tracks and among the objects on each track. Other control buttons allow a user to record audio clips and to author new stories.

Abstract: An electrical switch apparatus including a movement sensitive form is disclosed. The apparatus includes a housing, a motion sensor and a processing unit, where motion on, near or about the motion sensor is translated into output commands adapted for list scrolling, where the list can be arranged in a hierarchy such as menus or for changing a value of an attribute of a electrical device under the control of the switch.

Abstract: An information processing apparatus, system and method which can manage effectively an image forming apparatus. To accomplish this, a personal computer (30) is connected to a printer (40) for managing parameter sets in which multiple output parameters of the printer (40) are grouped and the personal computer (30) with printer properties for allowing an administrator of a server personal computer to register parameter sets, document properties for allowing an individual user of a client personal computer to register parameter sets, a server profile database for storing the parameters sets that have been registered in the printer properties, and an individual profile database for storing the parameters sets that have been registered in the document properties. A parameter set is read out of the server profile database or individual profile database to change the parameter settings of the printer (40).

Abstract: The system of the present invention includes a media-printing interface that allows users to interact with a multimedia transformation process and format multimedia data to generate a representation of multimedia data. The present invention provides a user interface that permits users to interact with media content analysis and media representation generation. A media analysis software module receives media content analysis instructions from the user through the user interface, and the media analysis software module analyzes and recognizes features of the media content, such as faces, speech, text, etc. The media representation can be generated in a paper-based format, in digital format, and in any other representation formats. The user interface includes a number of fields through which the user can view media content and modify the media representation being generated.

Abstract: A computing system for providing a user interface control to modify properties of items within a main application window. The computing system has a main application window, a gallery control window, a control object selection processing module, and a control object focus processing module. The main application window contains one or more application items, each application item having one or more control properties affecting a behavior of the application item. The gallery control window contains a list of one or more control objects for modifying control properties of the application items located within the main application window. Each of the control objects in the list of control objects includes a graphical icon having a selection portion and a properties portion and one or more control properties that affect one or more items within the main application window.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for handling special windows in a display comprises a window manager in an operating system that is called by application programs to create special windows. The window manager embeds static key signals including encoded special window information, such as the coordinates of a window area to be specially processed, into a video RAM. An existing video interface scans the video RAM and transmits display information, including the key signals, to the display. The present invention further comprises a window decoder in the display, that detects the key signals, extracts the encoded special window information, and controls display circuitry performing the desired special processing. The key signal encoding scheme does not create visually discernible display aberrations that could distract the user or interfere with normal window management.
