  • Patent number: 7537402
Abstract: A thermal activation device includes a platen lock mechanism for locking a platen roller of a platen unit and a heating unit or printing unit into press contact with each other. The platen lock mechanism has a lock arm mounted to undergo rotation about a rotational axis, a shaft member provided in one of the platen unit and the lock arm, an engagement recess for engagingly receiving the shaft member and provided in the other of the platen unit and the lock arm, and an urging member for urging the lock arm in a direction for bringing the shaft member into engagement with the engagement recess. In a state in which the heating unit or printing unit is in press contact with the platen roller, a distance between the rotational axis of the lock arm and an axis of the shaft member is greater than a distance between the rotational axis of the lock arm and the rotational axis of the platen roller.

  • Patent number: 7379678
Abstract: An image forming apparatus that is capable of normally performing second side printing on a transfer material, even if the transfer material put on standby after completion of first side printing is pulled out by a user. A transfer material having image formed on its first side is fed until it is partly exposed to the outside of a printer, and is then fed to a refeeding path in the printer and further fed to a standby position prior to image formation on the second side of the transfer material. When it is detected that the transfer material caused to stop at the standby position is pulled out by a user, a warning to stop pulling out the transfer material is given to the user.

  • Patent number: 7333766
Abstract: A large format printer using web fed material is able to cope with roll fed material and sheets having residual curl. An anti-curl guidance device counteracts curl when feeding the medium to a second transport system. The medium is held flat by a vacuum system and during re-feeding of the medium, the height of the position of the medium exhibiting residual curl is adjusted by a moving pivot roller to smoothly pass over a cutting bar. Also, the entrance of a re-feeding chamber is enlarged by lifting a retractor pivot plate by a retractor pivot to allow curled media to enter the re-feeding chamber. Curl can also be avoided by keeping the web roll of media in a relatively humid condition by restricting air flow or by using an extra humidifier.

  • Patent number: 7310495
Abstract: The present invention provides an image forming apparatus that can perform stable sheet conveyance, regardless of whether a sheet processing apparatus is connected thereto. The image forming apparatus can be connected to a sheet processing apparatus that performs post processing on each conveyed sheet. The image forming apparatus includes: a pair of discharge rollers that are located at the discharge outlet of the image forming main body for sheet conveyance, and have rotational members arranged so as to alternately face both sides of each sheet in the direction perpendicular to the sheet conveying direction; and an upper discharge roller holding member that changes the center distance between the discharge rollers from a first center distance observed when the sheet processing apparatus is not connected to the image forming main body to a second center distance observed when the sheet processing apparatus is connected to the image forming main body to convey a sheet to the sheet processing apparatus.

  • Patent number: 7302222
Abstract: An automatic document feeder (ADF) with a feeding roller used to carry a paper sheet to a reading position is provided. The ADF comprises a feeding path, a paper cartridge, an exit roller set, and a first lever. The feeding path is arranged in the ADF for guiding the paper sheet reaching the reading position and leaving the reading position. The paper cartridge has a fixed front edge aligned with an inlet of the feeding path. The exit roller set is located by the feeding path and at a downstream position with respect to the reading position. The exit roller set includes two exit rollers leaning against each other for carrying the paper sheet leaving the ADF. The first lever is connected between the paper cartridge and one of the exit rollers. As the paper sheet is jammed at the exit roller set, the paper cartridge may be raised to drive the first lever to separate the two exit rollers for removing the jammed paper sheet.

  • Patent number: 7292819
Abstract: Image forming methods and apparatuses capable of performing stable and fast sheet transfer operations are provided. In a continuous feed mode, a preceding sheet and a succeeding sheet are successively fed from a sheet tray through first and second transfer rollers to an image forming position. When it is determined that a trailing edge of the preceding sheet has passed the first transfer roller, the driving of the first transfer roller is stopped for a predetermined time period. As a result, the preceding sheet and the succeeding sheet are transferred with a desired sheet interval while suppressing sheet interval variations.

  • Patent number: 7251451
Abstract: While an output tray is housed in the printer body, a tray support supports the output tray in such a manner that has the output tray lifted off a surface on which the printer is placed. In the process of pulling out the output tray from the printer body, the tray support supports the output tray in such a manner that the rear end portion of the output tray gradually comes near to the surface on which the printer is placed, and guides the output tray so that a rib, which is formed on the front end portion of the output tray, and the rear end portion of the output tray are in contact with the surface on which the printer is placed when the output tray has been completely pulled out. The output tray is supported on the two portions, i.e., on the rib and rear end portion thereof, when it has been completely pulled out.

  • Patent number: 7246959
Abstract: An image formation apparatus or a sublimation printer includes a main frame, a platen roller, a head assembly, and a press lever. The platen roller is rotatably held between first and second side panels of the main frame. The press lever is pivotably supported on the first side panel of the main frame. The press lever presses the head portion against the platen roller with a predetermined pressing force when the press lever is pivoted. The first side panel has a groove that supports the press lever. The groove has a first wall portion on which the press lever abuts from a direction of the reaction force of the pressing force. The sublimation printer does not get deformed after repeated use, and therefore can generate the predetermined pressing force in a stable manner.

  • Patent number: 7245839
Abstract: A printer detects a roll radius of a recording paper roll once a day and measures the remaining amount of recording paper. Then the printer calculates the number of photo prints in the previous day as an actual consumption value from a difference in remaining amount of paper between the day and the previous day. The printer stores the actual consumption values in the form of a calendar cumulatively and creates a consumption record of the recording paper. Next, the printer estimates predicted consumption of the recording paper in a coming week based on the consumption record. And the printer predicts the time of occurrence of a paper-out condition based on the remaining amount of the recording paper and the predicted consumption. When it is predicted that the printer will be out of paper within a coming week, the printer displays a warning message on a LCD and urges a supervisor of the printer to prepare a new recording paper roll.

  • Patent number: 7224931
Abstract: The CPU of the image forming apparatus sets up an ADF reading magnification in the ADF driving unit including the motor and the motor driver referring to the first magnification conversion table in the memory of the system unit when reading a document image while a document is being moved. Further, the reading magnification that is also in the ADF driving unit is also set in the specific document detection unit. The specific document detection unit makes the pattern matching as to whether the read image data is that of a specific document using the magnification dictionary (specific image data) that is set and outputs a detection signal as the result of the matching to the CPU. As that time, the CPU controls the output of the applicable read image data by a printer according to the detection signal.
