Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved process for producing water-soluble and water-insoluble carboxylic acid polymers and copolymers. The process comprises the steps of polymerizing a carboxylic acid monomer, and a polyfunctional cross-linker monomer in a second embodiment, in an effective molar ratio, in a silicone solvent under an inert atmosphere in the presence of an effective amount of an initiator. The preferred copolymer of the second embodiment includes acrylic acid as the carboxylic acid monomer and a lauryl methacrylate and/or stearyl methacrylate as a comonomer. The resulting copolymers have new and unexpected tolerance to salt-containing water when mixed therewith.
Abstract: A homogeneous, high nitrile melt processable acrylonitrile olefinically unsaturated multipolymer and a process for making the multipolymer, comprising polymerizing a mixture of acrylonitrile monomer and one or more olefinically unsaturated monomers, in which the rate of addition of the multimonomer mixture is set by the rate of polymerization so that the concentration of unreacted acrylonitrile monomers and unreacted olefinically unsaturated monomer(s) is low and the polymerization process is in a monomer starved condition.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for obtaining copolymers of tetrafluoroethylene with one or more perfluorinated monomers having ethylenic unsaturation, said copolymers having only carboxylic or carboxylate groups as unstable end groups, by polymerization in aqueous emulsion in the presence of a dispersing agent. The process is characterized in that CHF.sub.2 --CH.sub.3 is used as chain transfer agent, and an inorganic peroxidic compound is used as initiator. The carboxylic or carboxylate groups are successively transformed into stable groups of the --CF.sub.2 H type by known stabilizing treatments.
