    Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for desalinating sea water. The system includes an energy source such as a laser 13, and a container 19 (partly or wholly transparent) for holding the sea water, the sea water having sodium and chlorine ions and a solvent (H.sub.2 O) with a predetermined dielectric value. The system applies a predetermined amount of energy, in the form of a laser beam 35 through the transparent container 19, to the seawater substantially at a resonance frequency of the solvent, for reducing the dielectric value of the solvent and vibrating the ions, permitting them to combine and precipitate out of the seawatewr, thereby desalinating the seawater. To increase the effect of the beam 35, the system includes a pair of mirors 15,17 for reflecting the beam back and forth through the sea water.

    Abstract: An improved process for removal of soluble contaminants from wastewater is disclosed which provides significantly enhanced contaminant removal and overall process efficiencies. The improved contaminant removal process is especially suitable for treatment of industrial effluents having high levels of dissolved cyanide and arsenic contaminants. Wastewater undergoes multiple stage sludge treatment, wherein sludge is mixed with wastewater sequentially in a plurality of discrete reaction stages for relatively short retention times. Reaction conditions which promote chemical and/or physical reaction of soluble contaminants with sludge are maintained, and liquid/solids separation is effected after each sludge treatment stage. Oxidizing agent is preferably mixed with the wastewater prior to multiple stage sludge treatment to change the oxidation state of inorganic contaminants and remove cyanide contaminants from solution.

    Abstract: A reactor for recovering metals such as copper, tin and lead from concentrated, acidic aqueous solutions includes a reaction vessel retaining a bed of scrap aluminum in a packed bed above the bottom of the vessel; a plenum below the packed bed of scrap aluminum, and a filter situated within the plenum, including a first perforated pipe enclosing a coaxial second perforated pipe, through which liquid can be filtered and withdrawn for recirculation into the reactor above the packed bed of scrap aluminum. Metal recovery is effected by reduction of metal ions in solution and precipitation onto the scrap aluminum. Multiple reactor systems including equipment required for pH adjustment of the wastewater also may be used.

The discharge tank (18) has a second outlet (20) for the mixture constituent of higher density. The relative levels of the first and second outlets are higher than the mixture inlet, the first outlet (16) being at a higher level than the second outlet. A communication passage is provided between the separating tank (12) and the discharge tank (18) through a base of the apparatus.

    Abstract: Solid bactericidal compositions are disclosed based on divalent silver (Ag(II)) as the active sanitized agent. The compositions are prepared by reacting acid liquid Ag(II) complexes with anhydrous calcium sulfate so as to form a solid matrix in which the bactericide is entrapped in the resulting hydrated calcium sulfate. Optimum compositions are described consisting of Ag(II) phosphate dissolved in phosphoric acid where the ratio of solid (by weight) to liquid (by volume) is 5:2. The resulting solid bactericides can be used in water cooling installations. They are capable of causing 100% kills within 10 minutes of E. Coli conforms in conformity with EPA protocols, allowing them to quality as swimming pool and hot tub sanitizers. Since the compositions are based on calcium sulfate, they are also suitable as mineralizers, thus providing a dual function.

    Abstract: This invention provides an apparatus and method for the complete fractionation of submicron particles according to size by capillary hydrodynamic fractionation. This objective is achieved by using small diameter capillaries; introducing a minor fraction of a liquid dispersion of particles to be separated into at least one capillary fraction; passing the minor fraction through the capillary; and, at the exit of the capillary, diluting the minor fraction with the same liquid as is carrying the fractionated sample. These modifications in the flow patterns are essential to the use of capillaries with diameters smaller than 60 microns. This invention is especially adapted for rapid analytical separation of not only rigid colloidal particles but also of soft latexes.

The holes in the perforated plate define reduced-area passages from the lower chamber to the upper chamber producing a vertical flow of low velocity in the lower chamber and of higher velocity through the passage in the perforated plate.

    Abstract: A decontamination treatment of process water is disclosed herein originating from electroplating/metal finishing and etching operations wherein the process water is loaded with heavy metal ions. The process combines predetermined quantities of alkali/acid solutions together with a quantity of Sodium Humate so as to produce a disposable sludge which is environmentally safe and poses the least risk for leeching of harmful metals from the resultant sludge. Decontaminated waste water solution is also produced via a sand filter which is further processed to remove ionic, atomic or molecular metal suspended in the waste water solution. This latter process includes a microcon filter having electronic pressure sensors and feedback controls for returning contaminated waste water back into the system via automatic back wash. An electromagnetic ionic filter removes additional ionic, atomic or the like metal contaminants.

    Abstract: A method of washing an upflow filter between service runs employs a filter bed having a non-buoyant particulate filter layer through which influent to be filtered is directed in an upward direction, and through which liquid employed in the washing operation is directed in an upflow direction. A two-stage washing operation includes the steps of first directing a combination of air and liquid in an upflow direction through the filter layer with the velocity of the liquid being less than the minimum fluidization velocity of the filter layer, for disrupting only some floc retained in the filter layer during a previous service run, and thereafter directing only liquid in an upflow direction through the filter layer at a velocity less than the minimum fluidization velocity of the filter layer for removing disrupted floc from the filter layer while leaving some floc attached to said particulate media of the filter layer.

    Abstract: Divalent silver halides provide a source for divalent bactericidal silver ions in the presence of persulfate. The halides are especially effective when applied to water used in industrial cooling installations, hot tubs and swimming pools and will conform to stringent EPA requirements for waters utilized for bathing as in tubs and pools of 100% kills of 100 K/cc E. Coli coliforms within 10 minutes, exemplary of which are the chloride and bromide which give 100% kills within 5 minutes. The halides, of course, can be used in salty water since they are solids immune from halide action that would otherwise precipitate soluble divalent silver from solution.
