A navigator, located at a server system, monitors the current play position of multimedia content at a consumer system and compares that position with navigation objects. When the current play position falls within the portion of multimedia content defined by a particular navigation object, the navigator sends the filtering action to the consumer system for processing. The terminal can also change channels from the selected channel x to an adjacent channel x±1 in the set of n ordered channels. In response to changing channels to the adjacent channel x±1, the terminal can receive and consume content for the adjacent channel x±1. The terminal can receive and store content for Y next adjacent channels (x±1)±y, y=1, . . . , Y in buffer memory. Content for the next adjacent channels is stored based upon the direction the channel is changed and in response to changing channels.

Abstract: Frequencies of viewing of first weekly broadcast programs by a user are detected in connection with past sections of the first weekly broadcast programs. At least one which has the detected viewing frequency greater than a predetermined threshold value is excluded from the first weekly broadcast programs to get second weekly broadcast programs. Program ranking measures representative of a relation between program attributes and user's preference are generated in response to (1) attributes of the past sections of the second weekly broadcast programs and (2) which of the past sections of the second weekly broadcast programs were viewed by the user. Future sections of the second weekly broadcast programs are ranked in response to (1) the generated program ranking measures and (2) attributes of the future sections of the second weekly broadcast programs.

Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus and method for allowing a user to search for specific content across many television channels in order to locate desirable television shows related to the searched content. Multiplexed cable signals flow thorough a logical unit which buffers text associated with the voice stream of each station via the pre-encoded closed-captioning signal or through the real-time voice translation within the logical unit. The user then enters search terms through one of a variety of different input devices. Upon entry of the search terms, the logical unit will compare the entered term with those available keywords stored in each buffer. Lexical parsing associates terms which may differ from plural to singular forms, or in tense. Additionally, synonym comparisons may be made. The logical unit will return a list of matches for the search criteria and allows the user the option of going directly to the television program.

Abstract: A method and interface for linking terms in an electronic message to program information, are provided. The method of linking terms in an electronic mesage to program information in an electronic program guide (EPG) comprises the steps of receiving an electronic message, comparing terms in the electronic message to terms in the program information of the EPG, and displaying the electronic message so that any terms in the electronic message which have a match in the program information based on the step of comparing terms, are distinguishable from terms which have no such match. The electronic message interface is adapted to link terms in an electronic message to program information in an electronic program guide (EPG). The electronic message interface comprises a receiver, a comparison unit, and a display device. The receiver is adapted to receive an electronic message.

Abstract: A television signal processing apparatus is capable of receiving emergency alert signals and providing alert outputs to notify individuals of emergency events. According to one exemplary embodiment, the television signal processing apparatus includes a tuner operative to tune a frequency including emergency alert signals indicating an emergency event. A processor is operative to cause the television signal processing apparatus to be switched from an off/standby mode to an on mode responsive to the emergency alert signals.

Through a telephone or electronic network interface, a caller can request specific supplemental information related to one or more characters within the broadcast television program. Abstract: Method, device and system for capturing and processing viewing data, which viewing data relates to the viewing behavior of users when viewing video data. Data about lines of sight of a user relative to the viewed video data are determined by projecting video data directly on the retina of the user and current eye positions of the user being thereby determined, which are transmitted by a telecommunications network to a central unit for further processing. In the further processing current eye positions are compared with predefined values, and predefined actions are triggered on the basis of the result of this comparison and/or the viewing data being stored in the central unit, and, for example later, being evaluated statistically.

Abstract: Systems and methods for presenting time-varying multimedia content are described. In one aspect, a lower quality data stream for an initial portion of the multimedia content is received. The lower quality data stream is received at a rate faster than a real-time playback rate for the multimedia content. The lower quality data stream was encoded at a bit rate below a transmission rate. A higher quality data stream of a subsequent portion of the multimedia content is received. The higher quality data stream was encoded at a bit rate that equals the transmission rate. The initial portion and the subsequent portion of the multimedia content are presented at the real-time playback rate. Receiving the initial portion faster than the real-time playback rate provides for a reduction of latency due to buffering by a desired amount.

Abstract: A method and system for efficiently allowing a controller device to receive information from a tuner device regarding the content of a digital television bit-stream. The present invention first receives a digital television bit-stream at a tuner device. The digital television bit-stream comprises video, audio, and data information, as well as tables that describe the content of the bit-stream. Next, to obtain a table, a controller device sets a value specifying a desired table in an attribute field of a command. Next, the controller sets at least one flag in a flag field of the command. The setting of the flag indicates the table which is being requested. Additionally, because a single attribute field may hold different types of information, the flags indicate which type of information is in the attribute field for this issuance of the command. The controller, then issues the command to the tuner, which determines what table is being requested, based upon the flags set.

A user can select between traditional video program material, such as scheduled special events and on-demand feature length films, as well as Internet access, video games and computer applications. Assignable Computing Devices (ACDs), one type of audiovisual serving device within the system, are used for a number of functions including providing Internet access to users, controlling the menu-driven process of selecting program material and providing computer applications to users. Other types of audiovisial serving devices provide program material such as on-demand feature length films and video games. The user communicates with the ACDs through an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) while selecting program material to view through a series of menus, which may be customized according to the preferences of an individual user.

Abstract: A data broadcast apparatus repeatedly broadcasts data using a carousel method, to a reception apparatus which stores the data into a memory and reproduces the data stored in the memory. A storing unit stores first data and second data. A detecting unit detects an event which prohibits the reception apparatus from reproducing the first data. A broadcasting unit repeatedly broadcasts the first and second data stored in the storing unit, and stops broadcasting the first data when the detecting unit detects the event. An instructing unit has the broadcasting unit broadcast a switch instruction, which instructs the reception apparatus to stop reproducing the first data and start reproducing the second data when the broadcast of the first data is stopped.
