  • Patent number: 8132710
Abstract: An assembly (10) that can be both joined and parted by temperature processing. A parting member (20) captured between two members of the assembly exhibits a state change as a function of temperature such that the two members can be joined with a meltable joining material (18) at a joining temperature, operated at an operating temperature lower than the joining temperature, and then separated at a parting temperature higher or lower than the operating and joining temperatures as a result of a parting force caused by the state change of the parting member. In one embodiment, the parting member has a coefficient of thermal expansion higher than a coefficient of thermal expansion of the assembly members such that differential thermal expansion causes the parting member to expand across the interface (16) between the members to generate the parting force.

  • Patent number: 8127978
Abstract: A swelling element packer is made with internal rings that are either split or scrolled. After the swelling element is built on a temporary mandrel a longitudinal seam of a variety of designs is cut through the element. This allows the rapid deployment of the element on the tubular that will be a part of a string and will serve as the final mandrel. The assembly is then magnetic pulse welded or crimped so as to urge the open ends of the rings to move toward each other and become secured to each other and further opening the possibility of attaching parts on the ring itself to the underlying tubular by displacing or otherwise removing the swelling material that was between the ring and the final mandrel when the magnetic pulse process began. The rings can be embedded wholly within the element or can extend beyond the opposed ends or combinations of the two.

  • Patent number: 8122938
Abstract: Exemplary embodiments of the invention provide a side dam for a continuous metal casting apparatus having elongated opposed casting surfaces forming a casting cavity. The side dam has an elongated upstream part and an elongated downstream part that are mutually laterally pivotable, and a smooth metal-contacting side surface extending continuously from an upstream end to a downstream end of the side dam. The surface has regions thereof formed on the upstream part and the downstream part. Mutual pivoting of the upstream part and the downstream part of the side dam enables the regions of the smooth metal-contacting side surface to be moved out of mutual coplanar alignment. The side dams can therefore be used to form either a convergent or divergent casting cavity to assists the casting procedure and to enhance the properties of the cast article.

  • Patent number: 8109430
Abstract: In one aspect the invention provides a method of cleaning molten solder from the hot tip of a soldering iron that does not require a water-laden sponge. The hot tip of the iron is wiped against a block of dry open-celled melamine foam. The block is formed with an inclined through-hole that leads to the bottom of a receptacle holding the block. The hot tip is wiped against the foam surrounding an upper end of the through-hole, and the molten solder removed from the tip accumulates in the receptacle below.

  • Patent number: 8100318
Abstract: A process of making useful shapes by joining of tungsten alloys. Joining of tungsten heavy alloys which are alloys typically made from W—Ni—Fe is used. These alloys are typically manufactured by liquid phase sintering. This leads to difficulty in producing large length to diameter ratio parts that have some significant weight (such as penetrators). A “brick and mortar” approach is employed wherein smaller segments of this alloy (low length to diameter ratio) are joined to together to produce a larger part with higher length to diameter ratio.

  • Patent number: 8083847
Abstract: To provide an infrared-shielding body sufficiently transmitting visible rays, having no half-mirror shaped appearance, requiring no large-scale apparatus when forming a film on a substrate, efficiently shutting invisible near-infrared rays with wavelength range of 780 nm or more, while eliminating a heat treatment at high temperature after film formation, and having a spectral characteristic such as transparency with no change of color tone. The starting material, which is a mixture containing a predetermined amount of a tungsten compound, is heated at 550° C. in a reductive atmosphere for 1 hour, then cooled to room temperature once in an argon atmosphere, thus producing powder of W18O49. Then, the powder, the solvent, and the dispersant are mixed, then subjected to dispersion treatment to obtain a dispersion solution. The dispersion solution and a UV-curable hardcoat resin are mixed to obtain a solution of fine particle dispersion of infrared-shielding material.

  • Patent number: 8074701
Abstract: A method for producing a pattern for the precision-cast representation of a component having a cavity is provided. In the method wherein the component is a turbine component having a cavity, the finished pattern comprises a core and an outer contour pattern, the outer contour pattern at least partially surrounds the core and at least partially defines the outer contour of the turbine component. The core is produced from a curable core material, which cures during the course of the method, and the outer contour pattern is produced from a material which can be burned or melted out. In this case, first the outer contour pattern is produced with a cavity corresponding to the cavity of the turbine component and subsequently the curable core material is filled into the cavity and cured to produce the core.
