  • Patent number: 4775578
Abstract: The invention provides an electrothermal hot-melt type thermal transfer ink ribbon having a multi-layered structure used in thermal printers having a multi-stylus electrode head. Different from conventional ink ribbons of such a type composed of an electroconductive base film as a resistive layer, a vapor-deposited aluminum layer to serve as an electric pass to a return electrode and a layer of a hot-melt ink, the inventive ink ribbon has an additional layer as a heat barrier between the aluminum layer and the hot-melt ink layer so that the heat generated in the resistive base film and reaching the ink layer is radially diffused to produce a remarkable temperature gradient within the dot decreasing from the center to the periphery thus to provide a possibility of gradation control of the optical density of the printed dots by means of the voltage adjustment.

  • Patent number: 4772511
Abstract: Solid, transparent, non-vitreous, zirconia and zirconia-silica ceramic microspheres, useful as lens elements in retroreflective pavement markings. The microspheres are characterized by:(a) containing at least one additive metal oxide selected from alumina, magnesia, yttria and mixtures thereof;(b) an index of refraction greater than 1.6; and(c) being virtually free of cracks. These microspheres are formed by a sol-gel technique of extractive gelation (extracting carboxylic acid away from zirconyl carboxylate) of a sol in liquid medium such as hot peanut oil. The microspheres of this ceramic composition have been made with relatively large diameters, (e.g. 200-1000 micrometers) making them quite useful as lens elements in pavement marking sheet materials.

  • Patent number: 4767653
Abstract: Heat-sealable sheet material for use in the fabrication of lapped-seam membrane. In a presently preferred construction, linear low density polyethylene film is adhered to one lateral border of cured polymerized EPDM composition; preferably the adhesive is protected with a removable liner, e.g., a polyester film until lapped-seam splicing is to be carried out. A transfer tape based on thermoplastic heat-sealable adhesive carried by a strippable liner also constitute part of the invention. The transfer tape is advantageously applied to a sheet of uncured EPDM compound and the resultant assembly subjected to heat and pressure to cure the compound and bond the heat-sealable adhesive firmly thereto.

  • Patent number: 4756952
Abstract: The inventive water-swellable caulking material for water-leakage prevention is of the type formed of a composition comprising a rubbery polymer and a highly water-absorptive resin and useful in the caulking works of a construction joint of concrete. Different from the conventional caulking materials of the type, the inventive caulking material is provided on the surface of a shaped body of the water-swellable composition with a coating film which is impervious to neutral water but exhibits water-permeability when contacted with an alkaline water of an alkalinity such as in an uncured concrete mixture so that the caulking material is prevented from premature or untimely expansion by swelling even when inadvertently contacted with water prior to application to the working site but capable of promptly expanding when contacted with an uncured concrete mixture with alkalinity.
