  • Patent number: 6526659
Abstract: An improved method of shipping, storing, and changing very large tires having a removable tread belt mounted to a tire carcass which are typically used on very large vehicles such as earthmovers. By compressing both the tread belts and the tire carcasses, they can be shipped separately so that less shipping and storage space is required. Tire changing only requires changing the tire tread without removing the wheel or carcass from the very large vehicle making it economically feasible to store and change tread designs to accommodate a variety of very large tire/vehicle operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 6519833
Abstract: A method of magnetizing a permanent magnet motor involves inserting a spacer in between multi-layered windings (24Ua and 24Va) wound on a plurality of magnetic pole teeth when magnetizing an unmagnetized magnet (26), and removing the inserted spacer (28A) after finishing the magnetization. The spacer (28A) is also inserted in a space between two stator windings (24Ua, 24Va; 24Ub, 24Vb) wound on two magnetic pole teeth adjacent to each other, a magnet material is magnetized by electrifying the stator windings with a direct current in a state of the spacer (28A) being inserted, a permanent magnet is thus formed, and the spacer (28A) is removed after finishing the magnetization.

  • Patent number: 6519853
Abstract: A pair of parallel rectangular windows are punched out in a thin sheet base material having the same thickness as that of a short hand part (13) including a weight part (13a) of a second hand (10) so as to form a hand forming part between the pair of windows and a part in the hand forming part forming a long hand part and a mounting part of a hand is pressed so as to form a thin wall part. Then, the second hand in a final shape is punched out from the base material so that a long hand part (11) and a mounting part (12) are formed with the thin wall part of the hand forming part and the short hand part (13) is formed with an original thickness part. Consequently, the second hand for an analog electronic timepiece in which the weight part (13a) is provided on the short hand part (13) can be easily and securely manufactured only by a press working.

  • Patent number: 6513227
Abstract: A method for forming metrology structures on a wafer on which magnetic transducers are being fabricated is disclosed. The metrology structures have a measurable electrical resistance which is an accurate surrogate for a physical dimension of a structure of the magnetic transducer, such as a pole piece tip. The metrology structure is preferably a resistor with pads usable with a four point probe. The resistor is preferably formed by creating a sacrificial pole piece structure over a pad of resistive material. The narrow dimension of the pole tip is then used as a mask to replicate the width of the pole tip in the resistive material through a milling process which removes resistive material outside of the masked area of the resistor pad. Control structures with unmilled pads of resistive material are formed along with the metrology structures to provide the sheet resistance of the pads prior to milling.

  • Patent number: 6497042
Abstract: A method for building a bicycle wheel and the wheel. Inserting a threaded end (106) of a spoke (100) through a hole (126) in the rim (102), through a spacer (118), and engaging the threaded end (106) with an internally threaded connector (104). The rim (102) and the connector (104) cooperate to maintain the axis of the threaded end (106) of each spoke (100) in a given spoke hole (126) so that it is skewed relative to the axis of a first portion of each spoke (100) extending from the hub to the rim (102). While the connector (104) is turned to tension the spoke (100), the spoke (100) permanently bends at a point (128) remote from the spoke's thread end (106).

  • Patent number: 6484384
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a collapsible driveshaft assembly includes the steps of disposing an end of a first tube within a forming die having a non-circular cross sectional shape, expanding the end of the first tube into conformance with the die cavity, inserting an end of a second tube is inserted within the deformed end of the first tube, and expanding the end of the second tube into conformance with the end of the first tube. As a result of this expansion, outwardly extending regions and inwardly extending regions of the second tube extend into cooperation with outwardly extending regions and inwardly extending regions of the first tube so as to cause the first and second tubes to function as cooperating male and female splined members. As a result, a rotational driving connection therebetween to form the driveshaft. When a relatively large axial force is applied to the ends of the telescoping driveshaft, the second tube will move axially within the first tube, thereby collapsing and absorbing energy.

  • Patent number: 6470572
Abstract: A method and apparatus for making a shaped-spring assembly. The method and apparatus utilizes a spring forming apparatus which facilitates the forming of shaped springs without adversely effecting the characteristics of the spring, and a magazine arrangement which stores and loads shaped springs, while maintaining the shape of the springs. The magazine arrangement further permits the storage of a plurality of the shaped springs without fatiguing a leading edge of the spring. With the apparatus and method of the present invention, it is possible to load empty shaped spring cavities at a select location, such as at a field site, and also have a steady supply of shaped springs available for quick replacement. The forming apparatus is designed so as to easily cooperate and/or be mounted onto the magazine arrangement so as to facilitate the transfer of shape springs which are shaped by the forming apparatus into the magazine arrangement.

  • Patent number: 6470571
Abstract: Method for producing a decorated adjuster for a necklace or choker in which a tube of elastic is inserted into a metal pipe to thereby form a raw material. The raw material is moved along a longitudinal axis while being rotated and pressed between a pair of molds having adjoining concavities formed between ends of the mold and in opposed relation to concavities in the other mold. The concavities have a shape gradually approaching a hemispherical form in a direction from an entry end to an exit end whereby the last concavity has a hemispherical form such that the raw material is progressively formed into a shell element. The shell elements have an inner surface coated with the elastic material and are formed upon the continual movement of the raw material through the molds. The shell elements are separated from one another and a pair of opposed through apertures are formed to thereby form the decorated adjuster.

  • Patent number: 6470551
Abstract: A slider-operated fastener comprises first and second opposing tracks including respective first and second interlocking profiles and respective first and second fins extending downward from the respective first and second profiles. The first and second fins are sealed to each other by a plurality of spaced preseals. After generating each preseal, a notch is formed in the profiles and upper portions of the fins at the generated preseal. To install a slider onto the fastener, the slider is initially positioned within the respective notch and then threaded onto the fastener in response to relative movement of the slider and the fastener. Either before or after the steps of forming each preseal and respective notch and installing the respective slider, the fastener is attached to a moving web of plastic film. The fastener-carrying web is later folded and sealed to form individual plastic bags.

  • Patent number: 6467159
Abstract: In the fastener-chain-finishing apparatus, only a knockout among plural members arranged below a fastener-chain-transfer path of a space-forming unit can move up and down but all the other members are not movable. Consequently, the units below the chain-transfer path can be compact. Further, main bodies of movable grippers and a punch of the space-forming unit, which have a length equal to a space-forming length of the fastener chain and are arranged above the chain-transfer path, have end surfaces that are exposed outside and are flush with each other at least on a side of a stopper-attaching unit arranged adjacent to them. As a result, all the operating members of the space-forming unit can be arranged so as to contact with the stopper-attaching members of the stopper-attaching unit.
