Abstract: A method of increasing the concentration of caffeic acid derivatives, such as cichoric acid, and the concentration of alkylamides, such as tetraene alkylamides, in Echinacea plant postharvest; and a composition, having increased amounts of these phytochemicals per gram of plant material. The method includes the following steps: (1) harvesting a plant having caffeic acid derivatives and alkylamides; (2) separating the plant into fragments; and (3) storing the separated fragments in refrigerated conditions at a controlled relative humidity which prevents wilting and microbial decay. The raw plant material obtained from this process can be used alone or in combination with other nutrients in a medicine or dietary supplement.
Abstract: This invention relates to the topical treatment of keloids, hypertrophic scars and burn scars by the use of a selected protein kinase c inhibitor and an effective penetrating agent selected from lecithin organogel or poloxamer 407 lecithin organogel. The protein kinase c inhibitors may be selected from sphingosine, sphinganine, phytosphingosine, N-Acetylsphingosine, N-Hexanoylsphingosine, N-Octanoylsphingosine, curcumin, tetrahydrocurcumin, curcuminoids or apigenin.
Abstract: Formulations containing spores of non-toxigenic strains of fungi are useful biocontrol agents for preventing toxin contamination in agricultural commodities, especially those for human and animal consumption such as peanuts, corn and cotton. These formulations include spores mixed with vegetable oil and applied to dry grain. Diatomaceous earth is added to the spore, oil and grain mixture to form a flowable formulation.

Abstract: Compositions having hypoglycemic and/or hypolipidemic activity are isolated from natural sources including yeast and Saltbush (Atriplex halmus). In addition, synthetic chromium complexes were prepared. Compositions possessing hypoglycemic and/or hypolipidemic activity with or without chromium containing natural and synthetic compounds are formulated for use in animals and humans. Methods for use of the compositions alone, or in combination with antioxidant agents, for regulating glucose and lipid levels in diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory and cell proliferative diseases and in skin conditions, are presented.
Abstract: References, i.e., solutions of known concentration for use as controls, calibrators, or standards, for assays of carbohydrate-deficient transferring in bodily fluids are obtained from units of bodily fluids from normal healthy individuals by digesting the transferring in these units with exogenous neuraminidase to achieve concentrated CDT solutions, which are then added in preselected proportions to a base matrix to achieve target concentrations.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method for determining the level of oxidized glutathione, or the ratio of reduced glutathione to oxidized glutathione, in a biological sample utilizing the thiol scavenging reagent 1-methyl-2-vinylpyridinium trifluoromethanesulfonate or another salt thereof at a level which rapidly scavenges reduced glutathione but does not interfere with the measurement of oxidized glutathione.
Abstract: The invention relates to a simplified process for the extraction of heparin from animal mucosa tissue. The method consists of an enzymatic hydrolysis step of the raw material at ambient temperature, followed by hydrolysis for up to 6 hours at a temperature of 50-75° C. Raise in temperature is obtained by easy means. The digestion mixture can be further incubated while cooling down to ambient temperature. Heparin is recovered from anion exchanger present in the protein hydrolysate.
