    Abstract: Flexible composite material is provided upon which a facsimile message containing both confidential and non-confidential information can be recorded. In general, the composite material comprises a recording layer and a cover layer. The cover layer is disposed over a substantial portion of the recording layer to define a confidential message recording area and a non-confidential message recording area. The cover layer has a plurality of transverse perforation lines formed along the longitudinal extent of the cover layer. The transverse perforation lines are spaced apart in parallel fashion, and each pair of adjacent perforation lines forms a cover layer strip that can be selectively removed. One or more of the cover layer strips bear preprinted instructions as to how to reveal the non-confidential area without revealing the confidential message.

    Abstract: Non-continuous reflective holograms or diffraction gratings are provided in various forms for authenticating documents and things, and for decorative and product packaging applications. In one specific authentication application, such a hologram or diffraction grating is firmly attached to a surface that contains visual information desired to be protected from alteration. Examples of such information include written personal data and photograph on a passport, driver's license, identity card and the like. The reflective discontinuous hologram is formed in a pattern that both permits viewing the protected information through it and the viewing of an authenticating image or other light pattern reconstructed from it in reflection. In another specific authentication application, a non-transparent structure of two side-by-side non-continuous holograms or diffraction patterns, each reconstructing a separate image or other light pattern, increases the difficulty of counterfeiting the structure.

    Abstract: Spine strip stock material, being withdrawn from a supply reel, is cut into pieces of the desired length and the pieces are subsequently fed into positionally accurate contact with cover boards which are moving on a conveying system. High cutting and feeding accuracy are achieved by a servomotor control system which, in response to sensing the motion of the cover boards, stops the infeed of the stock material, clamps and cuts the stationary stock material, feeds the cut spine strip pieces to a waiting position and then moves the pieces from the waiting position into contact with the cover boards.

In an alternative embodiment, a machine-readable optically variable device is provided in which the pattern of specularly light-reflecting surfaces produces a machine-readable message in response to light impinging on the device.

Preferably the reinforcing film includes an outer heat activatable adhesive layer that is melt compatible with xerographic toner, so that xerographic images can be permanently reproduced on the reinforced tabs. The invention also relates to methods of manufacturing and collating such tabbed sheets from web stock.

    Abstract: A method for making custom printed notes or note pads. One or more sheet assemblies are provided which have first and second sheets and a pattern of pressure-sensitive adhesive on the rear major surface of each of the sheets that contacts and is releasably adhered to the rear major surface of the other sheet only in nonadhesive areas. Indicia is printed on the front major surfaces of the sheets using a conventional copy machine. The sheets can then either be cut along predetermined lines to form the custom printed notes, or the sheets of a plurality of such printed sheet assemblies can be separated, stacked to adhere the patterns of pressure-sensitive adhesive on the rear major surfaces of the sheets to the front major surfaces of the sheets with the edges of the sheets in a predetermined orientation with respect to each other; and the stacked sheets can be cut along predetermined lines to form custom printed note pads.

    Abstract: A blank book attachment having a mark and sweep leaf with a fold out feature is provided. The leaf is pivotably retained along one edge on a frame, and the frame is pivotably retained at the binding spine of the host blank book. Pulling outward on the leaf causes the leaf to extend out and beyond the pages of the book allowing the pages to turn freely. When the leaf is placed within the host book, with the book open or closed, the leaf can be turned as a page, in which case it also acts as a mark to identify a specific position in the host book. Alternatively, the leaf may be pivoted on the frame to allow the host book pages to be turned past it in either direction.

    Abstract: The document or substrate containing the information to be protected is covered with a liquid crystal or other such material capable of being made transparent using a process such as heating it to a higher temperature than ambient room temperature. In this manner the information on the substrate is normally invisible and thus not accessible to individuals without special equipment. For copying, the coated substrate is then placed on a copier machine in which the transparent glass plate of the copier is heated, for instance by electrical resistance heating, to a temperature matching the temperature-transparency window of the coating on the document. The information on the substrate may also be made visible for viewing by covering the coating with a transparent plate heated to the proper temperature. A second coating of different color but substantially the same temperature transparency may be selectively applied to the first coating to provide normally visible information.
