  • Patent number: 8249024
Abstract: Soft handoff in an OFDMA system is disclosed. If the pilot signal strength for a base station exceeds the defined threshold, the base station is added to an active set list. Subcarriers in a plurality of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols are divided and allocated into subchannels. The OFDM symbols are divided and multiplexed. A soft handoff zone with a first dimension of the subchannels and a second dimension of the divided and multiplexed OFDM symbols is defined. The soft handoff zone has subcarriers with a subchannel definition, for example, an identical permutation.

  • Patent number: 8238819
Abstract: Two satellite communications systems can use the same frequency or frequencies in geographically overlapping footprints, without creating undue interference in a given system that is caused by the same frequency signal(s) that is/are used by the other system. In particular, an aggregate Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) of the radioterminals and/or ancillary terrestrial components of a second satellite communications system in the common footprint is sufficiently low, and/or the receive antenna gain of a first satellite communications system is sufficiently low compared to the receive antenna gain of the second satellite communications system, so as to increase an aggregate receiver noise that is seen by the first satellite system receivers by an amount that does not substantially change a Quality of Service (QoS) of the first satellite communications system.

  • Patent number: 8229400
Abstract: Granular access control over data is provided. The access control can be on an individual entity, a group of entities or other data characterizations. Further, the control is not limited to data in folders, but can include contacts from a contact list, calendar entries, incoming calls, applications that can be accessed by the electronic device, etc. A new attribute is associated with a data characterization, designated an access level. Another attribute is associated with profiles stored on the electronic device, designated as a guard level. When a request for access to data is received, the electronic device allows access to the data if the value of the guard level associated with the active profile satisfies a predetermined access requirement relative to the value of the access level associated with the requested data.

  • Patent number: 8224293
Abstract: A security system includes a software application running in a user's smartphone and a separately carried visual key that the user can image at will with the smartphone's camera. An effective visual key would typically comprise digital data encoded in a series of colored cells arranged in a colorgram. Such digital data is treated as a what-you-have security factor, and is concatenated with other security factors so users can authenticate themselves to websites, internet services, and even within the smartphone device itself or its applications. In one aspect, when users authenticate themselves to a server, the server returns a short-term supply of one-time-passwords or account numbers for use in secure access and financial transactions on other systems.

  • Patent number: 8213407
Abstract: One object of the present invention is to improve stability of wireless communication, regardless of a movement speed of a mobile station by estimating a movement speed of a mobile station using a signal prepared in advance for a used standard and selecting an appropriate base station. In the wireless communication system 100 according to the present invention, in order to adjust a timing of receiving data from the PHS terminal 110 to a desired timing, base stations 120, 122 transmit an adjustment signal for advancing or delaying data transmission timing in the PHS terminal 110. Thus, the PHS terminal 110 calculates a bias amount of such an adjustment signal to determine high speed movement of the PHS terminal 110 and perform handover from a micro cell base station 120 to a macro cell base station 122.

  • Patent number: 8204477
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and devices including a mobile communication device, a proximity application server and a receiving device. The methods of the mobile communication device include receiving an enterprise identification signal that may be an SSID transmitted by an enterprise access point. The user of the mobile communication device may have opted into receiving the services of the enterprise in accordance with the disclosed methods and devices. Therefore, the mobile communication device may generate a proximity data signal including an indication of receipt of the enterprise identification signal and an identifier of the mobile communication device. The identifier may be the telephone number of the mobile communication device. The mobile communication device can then transmit the proximity data signal to a proximity application server. The proximity application server can correlate the proximity data signal. Correlated data in turn may be sent back to a receiving device of the enterprise.
