Abstract: Our improved battery material, hydrated amorphous silica, is primarily intended to be employed in situations where an electric battery cell's environment is demanding. Hydrated amorphous silica in the form of black opal ore (rock form) is reduced to a powder, of any particle size. This hydrated amorphous silica is attached to a conductive grid or weaving. This finished hydrated amorphous silica, can be used as an anode, electrode or plate; it is then set, with or in an alkaline or acid base metal, or other appropriate material, forming an electric battery cell.

Abstract: Hydroxyalkylidene phosphonates, which give excellent inhibition of the formation, deposition and adherence of scale-forming salts, especially calcium carbonate, in aqueous systems, are degraded by the oxidizing biocides bromine and chlorine used to control microbial growth in such aqueous systems. It has been found that organic sulfonamides provide excellent protection against such degradation when they are added to the aqueous system along with the hydroxyalkylidene phosphonate scale inhibitors.

Abstract: Novel compounds obtainable by reacting together an imido-reagent such as diphenylphosphonimidotriphenylphosphorane) with a chelate of a transition or lanthanide or actinide metal, such as tris(dibenzoylmethide) europium III, has the property of fluorescing in UV radiation. The invention includes solid polymer bodies containing such compounds, or chelates of transition or lanthanide or actinide metals generally, the bodies having the property of emitting light by virtue of internally generated, e.g. by tritium ionising radiation. The body is preferably of polystyrene formed by polymerising the monomer in the presence of the compound or metal chelate.
Abstract: A method of making a sealed alkaline storage battery including a positive paste nickel electrode containing cobalt and/or cobalt oxide and a negative electrode stacked upon the positive electrode with a separator interposed therebetween in a battery container which is sealed within about one hour after pouring an alkaline electrolyte into the container. An initial charging of the sealed battery is provided within about 10 hours after the completion of the pouring of the electrolyte to provide an initial ampere-hour charge to the battery of about 5% or more of the battery's rated capacity. This method avoids formation of HCoO.sub.2.sup.- ions which cause short-circuiting of the battery.
Abstract: Organosilicone materials that are "density-matched" to the hydrocarbon medium also act as defoamers in hydrocarbon fuel, specifically as described herein for diesel fuel. Specifically these new defoamers can be described as alkylmethylsiloxanes. They have the characteristics of being slightly soluble or insoluble in water and hydrocarbon fuels. By changing the solvent and the method of dispersion, different particle size distributions are obtained.
