Patent number: 6567665Abstract: A method and apparatus in a communications system for handling overload conditions in a cell. Mobile assisted channel allocation information is used to identify an adjacent channel for use in directing a mobile station. The communications system monitors for attempts by the mobile station to access a first cell in an overloaded state. When such an access is detected, information is obtained for cells adjacent to the first cell. A second cell is identified from the cells adjacent to the first cell using the mobile assisted channel allocation information and a message is sent to the mobile station to access the second cell.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1999Date of Patent: May 20, 2003Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventor: Gregory Vincent Kissee

Patent number: 6564043Abstract: The invention pertains to a method and an arrangement for linearizing a radio receiver (20). The invention is advantageously applied in the reception circuits of mobile stations. A receiver according to the invention monitors the signal strength on the receive channel and its neighboring channels. In addition, the receiver can determine the quality of the detected signal by calculating its bit error ratio or signal-to-noise ratio. In normal conditions, i.e. when the signal strength is satisfactory on the receive channel and normal on the neighboring channels, the supply currents of the front-end amplifiers (A1, A2) and at least the first mixer (M1) of the receiver are kept relatively small. If the signal strength on the receive channel goes below a predetermined value or, on a neighboring channel, exceeds a predetermined value, said supply currents are increased. This may happen also if the bit error ratio or signal-to-noise ratio reaches a predetermined limit.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1999Date of Patent: May 13, 2003Assignee: Nokia Mobile Phones LimitedInventor: Antti Heikki Tapani Rauhala

Patent number: 6564037Abstract: The present invention relates to radio communication antennas and in particular relates to multi-user detection for CDMA antenna array receivers. A reverse link (mobile to base) of a cellular direct sequence code division multiple access system is provided which increases system capacity whilst avoiding system complexity. The invention provides a method of signal detection which is based on the partitioning of users into equivalence classes by beam-forming with subsequent standard multi-user detection techniques applied within each class. Computation techniques are simplified and processing time can be considerably reduced. Furthermore, the capacity of a conventional receiver may be improved by employing multi-user detection techniques. These techniques are particularly useful for systems which involve large numbers of users. A method of operation is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1998Date of Patent: May 13, 2003Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Catherine Zoe Wollaston Hassell Sweatman, John Scott Thompson, Bernard Mulgrew

Patent number: 6560463Abstract: The ultra-wideband communication system includes a transceiver configured to receive an ultra-wideband communication signal, which has embedded power level data. A measurement circuit in the transceiver measures the strength of the received signal. An attenuation factor is computed that compares the measured signal strength to the data embedded in the signal. A feedback circuit uses the attenuation factor to select a power level for a next transmission. In a preferred configuration, the transceiver also has a positioning circuit that is used to accurately determine the distance from the transceiver to the source of the communication signal, and the feedback circuit uses the distance to tune the power level for the next transmission. In another preferred configuration, a bit error rate is used to set power level for the next transmission.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2000Date of Patent: May 6, 2003Assignee: Pulse-Link, Inc.Inventor: John H. Patent number: 6556837Abstract: Closed-loop transmitting power control method is disclosed that employs a variable updating amount. At a receiver, the presence or absence of frame errors in a received signal from a transmitter is determined using CRC coding. If frame errors do not occur, a downward updating amount, which is an updating amount for lowering a reference value, is set according to the magnitude of the reference Eb/I0 value, the reference Eb/I0 value is lowered by this downward updating amount, and an error incidence flag is turned OFF. If frame errors are detected, an upward updating amount, which is an updating amount for raising the reference value, is set according to the logical state of the error incidence flag, the reference Eb/I0 value is raised by the upward updating amount, and the error incidence flag is turned ON.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 2000Date of Patent: April 29, 2003Assignee: NEC CorporationInventor: Takahiro Kuriyama

Patent number: 6549766Abstract: An integrated receiver with channel selection and image rejection substantially implemented on a single CMOS integrated circuit is described. A receiver front end provides programable attenuation and a programable gain low noise amplifier. Frequency conversion circuitry advantageously uses LC filters integrated onto the substrate in conjunction with image reject mixers to provide sufficient image frequency rejection. Filter tuning and inductor Q compensation over temperature are performed on chip. The filters utilize multi track spiral inductors. The filters are tuned using local oscillators to tune a substitute filter, and frequency scaling during filter component values to those of the filter being tuned. In conjunction with filtering, frequency planning provides additional image rejection. The advantageous choice of local oscillator signal generation methods on chip is by PLL out of band local oscillation and by direct synthesis for in band local oscillator.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2001Date of Patent: April 15, 2003Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Pieter Vorenkamp, Klaas Bult, Frank Carr
