  • Patent number: 6567646
Abstract: Variations in received signal amplitude caused by filter characteristics are reduced by a C/I measuring apparatus for a signal having a fluctuating carrier-frequency, comprising a filter for filtering the signal and means for splitting the signal into an RSS signal representing the signal strength and a BB signal representing the momentary carrier frequency deviation, comprising means for measuring the RSS signal unaffected by the frequency dependent attenuation in the IF filter. A method of measuring the C/I of a received signal is also disclosed. The method comprises the steps of filtering the signal using an IF filter to obtain one signal channel, feeding the signal to the FM detector and the RSSI unit, and measuring the signal strength of the received signal at a selected, substantially constant, carrier frequency.

  • Patent number: 6567665
Abstract: A method and apparatus in a communications system for handling overload conditions in a cell. Mobile assisted channel allocation information is used to identify an adjacent channel for use in directing a mobile station. The communications system monitors for attempts by the mobile station to access a first cell in an overloaded state. When such an access is detected, information is obtained for cells adjacent to the first cell. A second cell is identified from the cells adjacent to the first cell using the mobile assisted channel allocation information and a message is sent to the mobile station to access the second cell.

  • Patent number: 6564043
Abstract: The invention pertains to a method and an arrangement for linearizing a radio receiver (20). The invention is advantageously applied in the reception circuits of mobile stations. A receiver according to the invention monitors the signal strength on the receive channel and its neighboring channels. In addition, the receiver can determine the quality of the detected signal by calculating its bit error ratio or signal-to-noise ratio. In normal conditions, i.e. when the signal strength is satisfactory on the receive channel and normal on the neighboring channels, the supply currents of the front-end amplifiers (A1, A2) and at least the first mixer (M1) of the receiver are kept relatively small. If the signal strength on the receive channel goes below a predetermined value or, on a neighboring channel, exceeds a predetermined value, said supply currents are increased. This may happen also if the bit error ratio or signal-to-noise ratio reaches a predetermined limit.

  • Patent number: 6564037
Abstract: The present invention relates to radio communication antennas and in particular relates to multi-user detection for CDMA antenna array receivers. A reverse link (mobile to base) of a cellular direct sequence code division multiple access system is provided which increases system capacity whilst avoiding system complexity. The invention provides a method of signal detection which is based on the partitioning of users into equivalence classes by beam-forming with subsequent standard multi-user detection techniques applied within each class. Computation techniques are simplified and processing time can be considerably reduced. Furthermore, the capacity of a conventional receiver may be improved by employing multi-user detection techniques. These techniques are particularly useful for systems which involve large numbers of users. A method of operation is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6560463
Abstract: The ultra-wideband communication system includes a transceiver configured to receive an ultra-wideband communication signal, which has embedded power level data. A measurement circuit in the transceiver measures the strength of the received signal. An attenuation factor is computed that compares the measured signal strength to the data embedded in the signal. A feedback circuit uses the attenuation factor to select a power level for a next transmission. In a preferred configuration, the transceiver also has a positioning circuit that is used to accurately determine the distance from the transceiver to the source of the communication signal, and the feedback circuit uses the distance to tune the power level for the next transmission. In another preferred configuration, a bit error rate is used to set power level for the next transmission.

  • Patent number: 6556827
Abstract: A method of managing a plurality of radio links in a WLL (Wireless Local Loop) is provided. The state of each radio link are defined as L2_NewLid indicating establishment of the radio link is requested but not completed, LNK indicating that a new connection is established to the radio link, and L3_AddReq indicating establishment of the radio link is pending. A data link layer of a base station manages each radio link between a terminal and the base station referring to the state of the radio link. Upon request for establishing a radio link, the data link layer sets the LNK of the radio link to 1. Upon request for releasing the radio link, the data link layer sets the LNK of the radio link to 0. Upon request for adding a radio link, the data link layer adds the radio link by checking the L2_NewLid and the LNK of the radio link.

Abstract: The present invention regards method and apparatus relating to wireless office system. The present invention addresses the problem of enabling it to be determined in the wireless office system (5) when voice mail messages for users of mobile stations having subscriptions in the wireless office system (5) are received at the voice mail system (15), the voice mail system (15) being associated with but not included in the wireless office system (5). The duration(s) of greeting message(s) associated with the voice mail system (15) and the or each mobile station having an associated voice mailbox (16b1-16bM) in the voice mail system (15) is/are measured. The connection times to the voice mail system (15) are measured when calls for the mobile stations are forwarded to the voice mail system (15) from the wireless office system (5). By comparing the duration(s) of the greeting message(s) with the measured connection times, it is determined whether voice mail messages have been received.

  • Patent number: 6556837
Abstract: Closed-loop transmitting power control method is disclosed that employs a variable updating amount. At a receiver, the presence or absence of frame errors in a received signal from a transmitter is determined using CRC coding. If frame errors do not occur, a downward updating amount, which is an updating amount for lowering a reference value, is set according to the magnitude of the reference Eb/I0 value, the reference Eb/I0 value is lowered by this downward updating amount, and an error incidence flag is turned OFF. If frame errors are detected, an upward updating amount, which is an updating amount for raising the reference value, is set according to the logical state of the error incidence flag, the reference Eb/I0 value is raised by the upward updating amount, and the error incidence flag is turned ON.

  • Patent number: 6553215
Abstract: This system is for automatically controlling a radio receiver to provide an audible broadcast of the weather alert from weather stations. It may also be incorporated in a multi-band radio for automatically switching between AM/FM broadcast and weather alert broadcast. A scanning means operates continuously to tune the weather band portion of the receiver automatically in a stepping manner to receive signals from the weather stations regardless of whether the receiver is operating in any selected AM or FM broadcasting in the multi-band radio. A combination switching comparator and switching means automatically switch the system over to the weather broadcast when a weather alert signal is detected. The switching means also automatically switches the system back to the original selected broadcast after the termination of the weather alert broadcast.

  • Patent number: 6549766
Abstract: An integrated receiver with channel selection and image rejection substantially implemented on a single CMOS integrated circuit is described. A receiver front end provides programable attenuation and a programable gain low noise amplifier. Frequency conversion circuitry advantageously uses LC filters integrated onto the substrate in conjunction with image reject mixers to provide sufficient image frequency rejection. Filter tuning and inductor Q compensation over temperature are performed on chip. The filters utilize multi track spiral inductors. The filters are tuned using local oscillators to tune a substitute filter, and frequency scaling during filter component values to those of the filter being tuned. In conjunction with filtering, frequency planning provides additional image rejection. The advantageous choice of local oscillator signal generation methods on chip is by PLL out of band local oscillation and by direct synthesis for in band local oscillator.
