  • Patent number: 6535721
Abstract: A base station and receiver system for use in a base station which achieves enhanced dependability by logically separating the diversity reception paths into different failure paths. In one embodiment, the receiver system includes a first diversity reception path for receiving a first radio signal and a second diversity reception path for receiving a second radio signal. The first and second radio signals may be amplitude and phase shifted versions of the same information signal according to well known principles of diversity reception. At least one demodulator diversity combines the first and second radio signals and demodulates the diversity combined first and second radio signals. Additionally, the first and second diversity paths are logically separated into different failure paths.

  • Patent number: 6535740
Abstract: When a base station stops transmission due to its maintenance, transmission electric power of the base station is controlled so that a radio network between a mobile station and a selected one of the mobile station and the neighboring stations may not be disconnected. The base station gradually reduces the level of transmission electric power. Until the transmission completely stops, soft handoff deletion procedure between the base station and the mobile station is performed and soft handoff addition procedure between one of the neighboring base stations and the mobile station is performed.

  • Patent number: 6529742
Abstract: A method of controlling switching of an operation mode of a TV phone. The TV phone includes a TV unit that reproduces and outputs a video signal and an audio signal from a selected channel. A display unit interfaces with the TV unit and receives and displays the video signals from the TV unit while in a TV mode. A TV audio signal processer receives the audio signal from the TV unit and outputs audible sound. An MRFU receives data of a forward channel transmitted from a base station. An MSP provides a channel selecting signal to the TV unit in the TV mode and transmits and receives an audio signal input from the MRFU in a phone mode. The method comprises the steps of alerting the user of an incoming call in response to an incoming call signal transmitted from the base station when the TV phone is in a TV mode and switching from the TV mode to the phone mode, the switching preferably including disabling the operation of the TV unit.

  • Patent number: 6519478
Abstract: A wireless communication system base station uses a dual-polarized antenna array to receive two signal groups having orthogonal polarizations. In a preferred embodiment, a first signal group is received using a first sub-array of odd-numbered antenna elements, while a second signal group is received using a second sub-array of even-numbered antenna elements. Dipoles within the odd-numbered elements are selected so that they have a common polarization orthogonal to the dipoles selected in the even-numbered elements. The two signal groups thus have orthogonal polarizations. Base station signal processing hardware performs separate spatial channel estimation for these two groups, and uses the polarization diversity to improve performance in both the uplink and downlink. The use of polarization diversity allows the physical dimensions of the antenna array to be kept to a minimum.

  • Patent number: 6314306
Abstract: A text message originated ringer operates to carry out some operation based on an embedded control code in the message. The message includes all text, but some of the text characters are reserved. A control sequence, also in text, is contained between two reserved text characters. That control sequence is used to control the ringer in the remote phone. The control sequence is not displayed as part of the text message, but instead is only used as the control.

  • Patent number: 6216009
Abstract: A base transceiver station has a signal strength receiver and is capable of transmitting a directed retry signal. A processor connects to the signal strength receiver and compares a received signal strength to a predefined threshold. The processor causes the base transceiver station to send the directed retry signal if the received signal strength is less than the predefined threshold. A method is provided where a characteristic of a signal received at a base transceiver station is measured and compared to a predefined threshold. A directed retry is sent if the signal characteristic is less than the predefined threshold, and a communication channel is established if a response to the directed retry is received at the base transceiver station.

  • Patent number: 6185439
Abstract: In a digital switching network system wherein service measurements are periodically automatically collected, a user interfaces with the network via a Web browser to select those traffic counts of interest for on-demand sampling. The user designates whether the selected traffic counts are retrieved as a single sample or as a periodic sample. When the traffic counts are to be retrieved as a periodic sample, the user designates a period for the periodic sample. The system determines the locations where the traffic counts resides in the network, retrieves the traffic counts from their locations, and displays the traffic counts to the user.

  • Patent number: 6167272
Abstract: It is known to introduce into a cellular mobile radio network (CN) a test transmitter (TS) which transmits a test signal for reception by mobile stations located in the coverage area of the mobile radio network. A simple, computer-aided method for testing the mobile radio network is disclosed in which the test transmitter (TS) transmits the test signal on a carrier already assigned to a base station (BTS) of the mobile radio network (CN) for transmitting broadcast signals. Thus, each mobile station can receive the test signal in a simple manner. The receive level is transmitted to the base station serving the area in which the mobile station is located, and then passed on to a computer for analysis.
