  • Patent number: 4183231
Abstract: A safety coupling between a driving coupling and a driven coupling has a shear pin operative connection that shears upon overload, allowing relative movement between the two couplings. The shear pin is urged to establish a second operative connection after limited relative movement between the couplings. In each operative connection, respective stops retain the pin against further displacement. In one application, soil working rotors are rotated by shafts coupled to tool supports. One or more of the driving shafts can be connected to its driven support through a shear pin. A flange on the shaft has an opening that houses the lower part of the pin and the tool support has a bore that houses an upper pin part. Upon shear, the flange turns and a spring urges the remainder of the upper pin part downwardly, whereupon a recess in the flange engages that part and a second operative connection is established.

  • Patent number: 4179905
Abstract: A bearing system in a universal joint for journaling each of the bearing pins at a cross trunnion includes a journal for receiving each one of the trunnion pins. At least two of the journals are mounted on a drive shaft flange and have projections which engage grooves in an end face of the flange for preventing radial and lateral displacement of the journals with respect to the flange. Each journal has a seating bore for receiving a pin of the cross trunnion. A bearing bushing, having a bottom wall and side walls, is carried in each seating bore. A roller bearing is positioned between the inside of the side walls of the bushing and the trunnion pin carried therein, and a removable guard ring is carried in an annular groove of each journal engaging the bottom wall of its respective bushing for securing the bushing in the seating bore, thereby permitting removal and replacement of the bushing and allowing the use of guard rings having different thicknesses to adjust for clearances.

  • Patent number: 4178778
Abstract: The joint comprises a tripod connected to one of the two shafts to be coupled by the joint and defining three trunnions on which three part-spherical rollers are mounted. A second member of the joint is connected to the other shaft and defines three raceways in which the rollers are received. The tripod constitutes a member which is distinct from the shaft associated with the tripod and is connected to this associated shaft by an auxiliary homokinetic coupling. The latter is capable of operating at an angle of displacement which is small relative to the maximum angle of displacement of the two shafts coupled by the joint.

  • Patent number: 4177654
Abstract: A variable length transmission shaft for drive transmissions in various types of machinery includes a pair of parallel rotating or synchronous speed torque coupling joints and a connecting shaft carried between the coupling joints. Each of the coupling joints has inner and outer joint members which are slidable with respect to each other, and torque transmitting balls arranged between the inner and outer joint members for transmitting torque between the inner and outer joint members. The connecting shaft is formed of a pair of telescopically cooperating shaft members which are arranged for relative sliding movement with respect to each other. One of the shaft members is coupled to the inner joint member of one of the coupling joints and the other shaft member is coupled to the inner joint member of the other coupling joint. The overall length of the transmission shaft can be varied by effecting sliding movement of one of the shaft members with respect to the other shaft member.

  • Patent number: 4175404
Abstract: A spline shaft connection between a shaft and a hub with a large number of axially extending teeth and tooth gaps respectively counter-teeth and counter-tooth gaps which form-lockingly engage with one another, whereby a tooth flank clearance is provided between the flanks of mutually contacting teeth and counter-teeth that becomes larger in the direction of the axial extent; the teeth and counter-teeth engage into one another at least approximately uniformly without clearance at least over a small fraction of the axial extent of the spline shaft connection while the remaining part of the axial extent is constructed with a tooth flank clearance that becomes larger in the direction toward the end opposite the flow of forces; the enlargement of the tooth flank clearance thereby follows a law, pursuant to which the tooth flank clearance is a function of the axial coordinate whose first derivative is equal to zero along the axial coordinate at the location of the beginning of the clearance enlargement.

  • Patent number: 4175406
Abstract: A thrust cancelling shaft coupling in which two generally axially disposed flanges are connected by two frustoconically shaped elements positioned in opposite relationship to one another. The large ends of both elements are connected to the flange on one shaft and both small ends are connected to the flange on the other shaft. The thrust forces generated in one element as a result of a tendency to shorten in length under rotational and thrust forces are counteracted by the corresponding forces in the other element so that thrust forces are not transmitted from the element to either the shafts, bearings or other parts of the driving and driven equipment. The larger end of each element is connected to the respective flange, with a sleeve-like member interposed between the larger ends of the elements, and the smaller ends of the elements are connected to a cylindrical member on the opposite flange.

  • Patent number: 4175407
Abstract: The joint comprises a first member defining a tripod connected to a first shaft and forming three trunnions. Part-spherical rollers are respectively slidably and rotatably mounted on the trunnions. A second member connected to a second shaft defines three raceways in which the rollers are received. The raceways are each formed by a pair of part-circular sectioned grooves the mean line of which is an arc of a circle centered preferably in the vicinity of the axis of the second shaft. The tripod is rigid with a shaft section which has, in a zone close to the tripod, a substantially triangular cross-sectional shape approximately constituting the envelope of the free edge of the second member when the joint operates with an angular displacement of the first and second shafts close to the maximum possible angle.

  • Patent number: 4173129
Abstract: An improved seal for use in a universal joint structure. The seal includes a C-shaped seal ring which is loaded into sealing engagement with an associated bearing cap by a load ring compressively nested within the C-shaped seal ring. The leg of the seal ring sealingly engages the bearing cap under a controlled load to provide an improved oil seal. The arrangement of the seal is coordinated with the allowable play of the trunions of the joint structure so as to assure positive sealing engagement of the seal ring as a result of the loading of the load ring over the entire range of play movement permitted in the joint structure. The trunions may be journaled in the bearing caps by suitable roller bearings which may effectively further limit the play so as to limit sliding movement as well as axial deflection of the seal rings for further improved sealing in the joint structure.

  • Patent number: 4172367
Abstract: This invention provides a torque tube or coupling housing which is adapted to join a power transmitting member to a power driven member. A rectangular or square metal tube provides this torque tube which has two parallel, spaced-apart outer surfaces. In these spaced-apart surfaces and preferably near their central portions are formed aligned pilot holes. Using these pilot holes as an axis appropriate mounting holes are formed in each of the planar surfaces. The torque tube is then bolted in place to provide a fixed coupling of the power members. As a method, this torque tube provides the steps for joining a power output to a power receiving device wherein the coupling is drilled to provide mounting holes measured from the to be mounted component.

  • Patent number: 4172390
Abstract: In a pivotally mounted member of the memory fine tuning arrangement for a turret type television tuner, a pivotally moved lever plate provided integrally with a pivotal shaft having head portion, neck portion and body portion, is pivotally mounted on a front wall chassis base by setting the neck portion of the pivotal shaft into a notch of the front wall, wherein assembly of the lever plate to the front wall chassis base can be achieved by the two steps of inserting the head and neck portions of the pivotal shaft into a large opening portion of the notch in the front wall and slidingly setting the neck portion in a small opening portion from the large opening portion through continuous opening portion of the notch. To ensure easy and accurate assembly, a vertical support for the pivotal shaft on the front wall is affixed to the pivotally mounted member so that the parallel relation between the front wall and the lever plate is maintained.
