Patent number: 3999124Abstract: A method of and apparatus for determining when an unknown quantity is within a desired range of a reference quantity. The apparatus includes a dual slope integrator which integrates the reference quantity and the unknown quantity and discharges the resultant integrated levels. By integrating the reference quantity at least once and the unknown quantity at least twice for three different time periods which differ from one another by amounts which are proportional to the desired range, a comparison of the discharge times of the resultant integrated levels will provide an indication of whether the unknown quantity is within the desired range, when the desired range is a percentage of the value of the reference quantity.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1975Date of Patent: December 21, 1976Assignee: Romilly John SimmsInventor: Jerry D. Patent number: 3999139Abstract: The IF amplifier combines the high frequency and low noise figure characteristics of a cascode stage with the large signal handling capability and accurate gain control of a direct emitter coupled amplifier controlled by a constant current source. The amplifier uses a technique of alternately stacked cascode stages which results in minimizing both the total current drain and the value of DC potential necessary to operate the amplifier. A current mirror, independent of power supply variation, is used to control the gain of the amplifier and is also used to provide temperature compensation for amplifier gain. Special bias techniques along with the current mirror minimize the variation of the amplifier gain with respect to DC power supply variations. Novel use of semiconductor devices minimizes the number of leadout connections on an I.C. chip needed for attaching large external bypass capacitors.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1974Date of Patent: December 21, 1976Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventor: Robert D. Patent number: 3997834Abstract: A method for determining the state-of-charge for zinc mercuric oxide type primary cells. I-V curves of the cells are plotted and the nearly constant slopes of these I-V curves above 75mA are measured graphically. These slopes are used to define effective differential DC resistance values (.DELTA.V/.DELTA.I).sub.75mA which have a linear relationship to charge expended, Q(A-h), which is graphically produced by plotting (.DELTA.V/.DELTA.I).sub.75mA versus Q(A-h). This relationship is used as a basis for a state-of-charge indicator to determine the remaining charge to about 12%. One can also subtract the internal resistance of the cell (measured with an a-c bridge technique) from (.DELTA.V/.DELTA.I).sub.75mA and obtain a new parameter, R.sub.p, which is related to the polarization resistance of the cell. The maximum uncertainty can be reduced to less than 10% if the linear curve is produced by plotting polarization resistance R.sub.p of the cell versus the charge expended Q(A-h).Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 1975Date of Patent: December 14, 1976Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: John J. Winter, James T. Breslin, Raymond L. Ross, Frederick Rothwarf

Patent number: 3997835Abstract: In measuring the distance between a measuring sensor and a metallic body, the sensor is comprised by a resonance circuit including a capacitor and a coil, and the sensor is connected to the input of a Q multiplier circuit which is impressed with an AC signal having a predetermined frequency. The non-linear distance-inductance characteristic of the coil is compensated for by adjusting the selectivity of the resonance circuit so that the amplifier included in the Q multiplier circuit produces a linear output. Such compensation is performed by adjusting the gain and/or the amount of positive feedback of the Q multiplier circuit.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1974Date of Patent: December 14, 1976Assignee: Nippon Kokan Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Seigo Ando, Takeo Yamada, Katsujiro Watanabe
