Abstract: A process and apparatus for coating only one side of a metal strip with a molten metal, by continuously conveying a cleaned and heated strip of metal through a protective gas atmosphere above the level of a melting bath of the molten metal. The metal strip is supported on a reverse side thereof in the area of contact with the molten metal, and with the obverse side of the strip out of contact with the bath itself. The molten metal is conveyed by means of a scoop roller towards the supported area of the strip and only the scoop roller is immersed in the melting bath and only for a part of its surface area.

Abstract: A multi-colored decorative zinc or zinc alloy having locally organic dyestuff-dyed portions in multi-color is prepared by (1) dyeing with a dyestuff zinc or zinc alloy having a dyeable chromate film bonded thereonto, (2) polishing locally the dyed surface of zinc or zinc alloy, (3) making the chromate film on the exposed surface, (4) dyeing with another dyestuff having a different color the chromate film on the exposed surface, and then the steps (2), (3) and (4) may successively be repeated.
Abstract: The adherence and wear resistance of chromium alloy electroplates on titanium is improved by pretreating the substrate to form a chromium conversion coating, and post-treating the substrate at a temperature at about 700-820.degree. C. (1300-1500.degree. F.) for about 1-300 hours. The pretreatment is comprised of the formation of a chromium conversion coating from an acid chromate solution; a preferred solution is comprised of hydrofluoric acid, sodium chromate, and water. The post treatment causes diffusion sufficient to obtain a bond but avoids completely interdiffusing the chromium alloy electroplate, to preserve the wear resistance of the electroplate surface.

Abstract: Articles of almost any imaginable configuration are given a uniform, complete coating over all surfaces by placing them in a spinnable perforate container or basket that is suspended from a reversible spinning assembly which is adapted to spin the perforate container and its articles in both directions during steps of the process of pre-coating, coating, quenching or air drying.A new control system is also employed to provide rapid response in reversing directions of rotation of the perforated container or bringing it to a complete stop.
Abstract: By the process of this invention, printed circuits are prepared containing an electrically conductive wiring trace from materials having adherent and non-adherent surface areas, e.g., printed circuit substrates bearing an imaged photoadhesive layer. Onto the adherent surface areas of the material are applied ductile metal or alloy particles, and any excess particles are removed from the non-adherent areas. The metallized areas are conjoined, e.g., with silicon carbide brush or rounded metal rod. The conjoined areas can be electrolessly plated, electroplated or soldered. Multilayer printed circuits can also be prepared by repeating these steps with additional layers of photoadhesive material adhered to underlying printed circuits.
Abstract: A process for inhibiting corrosion and providing a foundation for subsequent application of organic coating systems to metal surfaces, such as steel surfaces and zinc-, lead-, copper- and tin-coated surfaces, comprises the development of a protective phosphatizing reaction coating based on a metal other than the metal which is to be protected either by an immersion treatment or by a spray treatment with a phosphatizing bath which contains the metal phosphate or metal acid phosphate matter for such a treatment in a status nascendi.

Abstract: A method for providing a barrier against copper diffusion into a zirconium alloy tube which is lined with copper for the purpose of increasing the resistance of the tube to stress corrosion induced by fission products when the tube is used to fuel a nuclear reactor. The method involves the deposition of a copper lining on the zirconium alloy tube and the subsequent exposure of the lined tube to a substance such as steam, water, nickel oxide or carbon dioxide or another material which has the ability to oxidize the zirconium without oxidizing the copper. Thus, a zirconium oxide layer is developed between the zirconium alloy tube and the copper lining thereon.
Abstract: A continuous process for coating ferrous or zinciferous metal substrates using an acidic coating solution of zinc phosphate in the presence of hydrogen peroxide wherein (a) the molar ratio ortho phosphate/zinc in solution is maintained in the range 0.5-3.7, and (b) the coating solution is replenished with hydrogen peroxide, replenishment feed (i) (comprising zinc, ortho phosphate and anion N.sup.n-), and replenishment feed (ii) (comprising alkali), the ratio of the quantities of (i) and (ii) being defined. The acid H.sub.n N has a pK.sub.a value not greater than 3.
Abstract: Apparatus and process for depositing materials such as Si.sub.3 N.sub.4 and SiO.sub.2 on semiconductor wafers in a hot-wall reactor. A perforated distribution tube is positioned in the reaction chamber, and the wafers are placed inside the tube. Reactant gases are introduced into the chamber outside the tube and pass to the wafers through the openings in the tube.
Abstract: A dual blade fountain coater for simultaneously coating the opposite sides of a moving web of paper includes a pair of oppositely positioned, non-contacting fountains and a pair of oppositely positioned metering blade assemblies which are mounted for movement about a common transverse pivot axis, which pivot axis is substantially coincidental with the blade contacting region on the web. Each assembly is independently adjustable of the other for adjusting blade angle and each fountain is similarly independently adjustable for varying the coating contacting region and dwell time. Metering bars may be mounted on the blades.

Abstract: Disclosed is an electrode having a substrate with an elecrically active surface film. The film has a relatively imporous, dense portion in contact with the substrate and containing cobalt, tungsten, and phosphorous, and a less dense, more porous portion containing oxycompounds of cobalt. Also disclosed is a method of preparing the electrode by electroless deposition of cobalt, tungsten, and phosphorous onto a metallic substrate and heating of the substrate in the presence of oxygen to a temperature and for a time sufficient to form filament-like cobalt oxycompound elements extending outwardly from the surface of the film.
Abstract: In a flexural mode quartz crystal vibrator formed from a thin quartz crystal plate, a subminiature quartz crystal vibrator characterized in that said quartz crystal plate is obtained by rotating an X-cut plate around the X-axis by an angle of 0 to 10.degree. and further rotating the same by an angle of 70 to 90.degree. around the Y'-axis, the vibrator having a thickness of less than 0.2 mm as fomed by a photolithographic technique, exciting electrodes being deposited on the sides thereof.

Abstract: A method of making a composite conductive structure is described. The structure includes an insulating substrate on which is provided a conductor of a refractory metal substantially nonreactive with silicon dioxide covered by a layer of a silicide of the refractory metal and a layer of silicon dioxide. The method includes depositing a layer of polycrystalline silicon over the conductor and the insulating substrate, reacting the layer of polycrystalline silicon with the conductor to form a refractory metal silicide, removing the unreacted portion of the layer of polycrystalline silicon, and then oxidizing the exposed surface of the refractory metal silicide into a layer of silicon dioxide.
