Abstract: A modular roundabout or traffic calming system with interlocking connectors and a method of installation utilize a plurality of boards arranged in a pattern on a ground surface at an intersection of vehicle roadways, the pattern including one or both of a central island and a splitter island. At least some of the boards forming a perimeter of the pattern are affixed to the ground surface. At least some of the boards forming interior boards are interconnected at adjacent edges with connectors. The connectors can include a hinge joint so that the interconnected boards can be folded or rolled. A kit for a modular roundabout or traffic calming system is also provided.
Abstract: A method or system for constructing a non-slip ramp having at least two sloped ramp stringers and a starter wedge having a sloped side and an open side. A non-slip deck board is slid into the open side of the starter wedge and at least two tread plates, each providing spacing between two adjacent non-slip deck boards, each tread plate having a flat top section with a substantially L-shaped section attached perpendicular to the flat top section, with the bottom of the L fitting below one of the adjacent deck boards. The at least two tread plates are attached to the at least two sloped ramp stringers and an end-cap attached to a last non-slip deck board.
Abstract: A slip form paver machine includes a slip form mold and left and right side form assemblies closing the slip form mold on the sides. Each side form assembly includes a mounting portion, a side form, and a side form actuator configured to move the side form up and down relative to the mounting portion to adjust a height of the side form relative to the ground surface. At least one side form height sensor is configured to detect the height of the side form. A controller is configured to receive input signals from the side form height sensors and to send control signals to the side form actuators to control the height of the side forms relative to the ground surface.
Abstract: Patch and crack sealing devices, assemblies, and methods. In one embodiment, a device for surface repair includes an application arm having a torch heating element and an interconnect end adjacent the torch heating element. The device may include at least one applier. In particular embodiments the applier is an interchangeable applier removably coupled to the interconnect end. The result may be an improved device and method for applying/manipulating a polymer asphalt binder and construction aggregate composition at a proper application temperature.

Abstract: Various implementations include a machine for resurface existing roads. The machine may include a premixed stress absorbing membrane interlayer (SAMI) material distribution component configured to distribute a premixed SAMI material on an existing road. The distributed premixed SAMI material may include a mixture and/or combination of binding material and pre-cut fiber material. The machine may also include a channel positioned adjacent and downstream of the premixed SAMI material distribution component. The channel may be configured to supply an asphalt mixture directly over the premixed SAMI material. Additionally, the machine may include a screed positioned adjacent the channel. The screed may be positioned to contact the asphalt mixture.
Abstract: An impact-absorbing assembly includes a covering layer being one or more of artificial turf, rubber mats, polymer mats, short pile carpeting, particulate infill, wood chips, and ground rubber chips. Also included is a layer of underlayment panels positioned beneath the covering layer. The panels have a panel section with a plurality of drain holes formed therethrough. A top surface of the panels is configured to support the covering layer. A bottom surface of the panels has a plurality of bottom projections that cooperate to define bottom channels suitable to permit water flow across the bottom surface, the bottom channels being in fluid communication with the panel drain holes. The bottom projections define a first spring rate characteristic that is part of a first stage and a second spring rate characteristic is part of a second stage, the first stage having a smaller volume of material than the second stage.
Abstract: Road markings made of special materials with reflective additives (micro-glass beads) that increase the retroreflection factor of the road marking independent of the color (whiteness, brightness) of the road marking material (thermoplastic, cold plastic, paint). Light sources, such as car headlights, emit radiation, including in the form of visible light. A major portion of the light beams directly incident onto a pavement (6) is absorbed. According to the first embodiment, a portion of all incident light beams is partially reflected directly from a road marking layer (4) and returned in the opposite direction. In both embodiments, a portion of the light beams is incident upon an extending portion (1). Since no additional layer (8) is present on the surface of the extending portion (1), the light beam is partially reflected and, upon refraction, passes inside a micro-glass bead (2).
Abstract: An automatic vibrator assembly includes a single vibrator mechanism or first and second vibrator mechanisms connected to first and second switch assemblies that are all housed with a case that attaches between a concrete finishing tool float and adaptor using industry standard bolt layouts. The vibrator mechanisms propel the float when the switch assemblies recognize a predetermined amount of forward and backward float tilt. Where the assembly uses two vibrator mechanisms or a single bidirectional vibrator assembly, the vibrator mechanisms can propel the float in different directions depending on the direction of tilt. Additional features include a variable speed controller, master switch for operating in automatic or manual mode, and docks that accommodate one or two removable batteries.

Abstract: A road marker includes a single piece of material having a width of approximately three inches or less. The piece includes a top surface, a bottom surface, and a sloped face disposed between the top surface and the bottom surface. The bottom surface is configured to enable the bottom surface to be connected directly to a floor of a channel of a roadway. The road marker further includes a reflector disposed on the sloped face. Another road marker disclosed herein includes a reflecting member including a reflective surface. The road marker also includes a housing configured to support at least a portion of the reflecting member below a surface of a roadway.
Abstract: A paver includes a main vehicle body and a set of fore-wheels. The set of fore-wheels is connected to the main vehicle body via a hydraulic wheel suspension system which, in at least a paving mode of the paver, allows hydraulic level compensation for each wheel of the set of fore-wheels. The paver further includes a hydraulic motion control assembly adapted to selectively provide hydraulic spring suspension and/or hydraulic dampening to at least one wheel of the set of fore-wheels.
Abstract: An optical fiber tape includes a matrix and at least one optical fiber connected to the matrix in an undulating manner. The undulations of the optical fiber are generally sinusoidal, semicircular, or elliptic, and are of amplitude and wavelength such that the minimum bend radius of each undulation is not less than a minimum bend radius specified by a manufacturer of the optical fiber. A road having an upper surface has a pathway indented into the upper surface to less than full depth of the road and has the optical fiber tape laid in the pathway so that the optical fiber tape does not protrude above the upper surface of the road.
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for compacting soil and granular materials. The soil compaction apparatuses include an arrangement of diametric expansion elements that, in their expanded state, form a larger compaction surface. In another embodiment, a compaction chamber can be provided with diametric restriction elements and a flow-through passage in the upper portion of the chamber exterior of a drive shaft. The diametric expansion or restriction elements can be fabricated from, for example, individual chains, cables, or wire rope, or a lattice of vertically and horizontally connected chains, cables, or wire rope. Embodiments of the soil compaction apparatus include, but are not limited to, closed-ended driving shafts, open-ended driving shafts, flow-through passages, no flow-through passages, removable rings for holding the diametric expansion/restriction elements, and any combinations thereof.

Abstract: A plug device for covering a cavity excavated in the ground. The plug device includes a head defined by a plate having a planar upper surface and a planar lower surface, wherein the plate has a size that corresponds to a size of the excavated cavity. The plug device also includes a plurality of anchor members extending axially away from the planar lower surface, and that are configured to secure the plug device to the cavity.
Abstract: A snow and ice melt system having one or more zones, each including one or more heaters, and having one or more controllers configured to use a power output of each heater and an average temperature of each zone to determine operational control of each heater to achieve a specified result. Hydronic or resistive heaters could be used. The controllers may be configured to use a system temperature response over time to determine if a phase change of the snow or ice is occurring. The phase change might indicate that snow or ice is present on a zone and is melting. Use of a first derivative of the system temperature response over time might determine a percentage of a zone covered by snow or ice. Use of a second derivative of the system temperature response over time might determine whether melting is complete.
Abstract: A road-finishing machine for producing a paving layer from a laying material or a charger vehicle for supplying the road-finishing machine with a laying material. The road-making machine comprises a material bunker, and a pushing means fixed forward of the material bunker at a chassis, such that pushing rollers of the pushing means may dock to rear tires of a truck. The pushing rollers comprise a pair of first pushing rollers mountable in a first position in a seat of a traverse of the pushing means. Either the pushing means is expandable by at least one changeable attachment to which the first pushing rollers may be mounted in a second position further forward with respect to the first position, or the pushing means comprises a pair of second pushing rollers which may be selectively positioned forward of the first pushing rollers.
