  • Patent number: 11702594
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method for stabilising a volume of soil (e.g. a volume of soil that defines a road base or a road sub-base). The method comprises applying a coating agent comprising one or more salts of fatty acids derived from coconut oil to the soil, whereby soil particles in the soil are coated with the coating agent, and then applying to the soil a setting agent comprising a metallic salt that is capable of reacting with the one or more salts of fatty acids derived from coconut oil, whereupon a set product is formed. The soil is subsequently compacted, whereby the coated soil particles are consolidated.

  • Patent number: 11702801
Abstract: Roadway resurfacing often requires removal of the existing asphalt from the roadway for reuse. One method of resurfacing a roadway is hot-in-place recycling. Hot-in-place recycling employs substantial heat to remove the oxidized or aged asphalt. This heat further oxidizes the asphalt, creating a material that lacks many desirable properties (e.g., flowability) and flexibility. The disclosure provides compositions and methods that enhance oxidized asphalt, making it more viable for use in resurfacing roadways. Accordingly, compositions comprising recycled asphalt pavement and a rejuvenating agent are disclosed. The compositions combine a rejuvenator and fresh asphalt flux to make a modified asphalt rejuvenator. The modified rejuvenator is then mixed with recycled asphalt pavement to form a rejuvenated asphalt composition.

  • Patent number: 11686053
Abstract: A bridge paving machine and method for paving a 3D design without vertical profile rails includes converting a desired design into a 3D surface model to account for certain factors known to cause deviations in the paving processes and paving the 3D surface model in the expectation that factors will cause the 3D surface model to deflect into the desired design. An on-board computer system adjusts the 3D surface model in real-time to correct for on-site variables. The on-board computer system receives data from various external sensors, including deflection sensors fixed to girders in the bride structure, and paving machine-based sensors, and uses various predictive models to predict surface deflection based on the sensor data. The 3D surface model is continuously updated based on the predictive models and actual measured deflections.

  • Patent number: 11643783
Abstract: A cost-effective orthotropic deck bridge panel which is capable of being standardized to facilitate the use of orthotropic decks on short span bridges. Inclusion of a concrete deck in the panel simplifies fabrication details, thereby increasing the economic viability of the disclosed orthotropic deck panel in short span bridge projects. Shortcomings in fabrication of steel support ribs of the panel are overcome by using a cold roll-forming process instead of a press brake to form longitudinal bends in sheet material. The cold roll-forming process further allows camber to be introduced in the support ribs, thereby eliminating an extra manufacturing step.
