  • Patent number: 6081508
Abstract: A user of a remote typically has a choice of multiple access methods and telephone numbers using which the user can connect his remote computer to a local computer or a local area network. The remote user often user faces several problems. These problems include first knowing what numbers and access methods the user has a choice of, and knowing the cost of using those numbers and access methods. This first problem is exasperated by a large number of available access points, changes of access telephone numbers, changes in telephone and network access rates, and changes in quality of service provided by various service providers. Distributing, storing, and searching a comprehensive directory of access numbers and associated costs would, in general, be prohibitive on remote computers with limited storage and computation capacity, such as portable computers typically often used by mobile workers.

  • Patent number: 6072809
Abstract: A method is disclosed for maintaining and updating statistical trends of network delay to provide a predictive approach to synchronization. Necessary information, such as timing and stream ID information, is gathered from streams of data and future network delay values are predicted by constructing a measured packet-delay distribution curve. In a preferred embodiment, the inventive system maintains a delay histogram with a discrete set of quantization bins, each storing the relative frequency with which a particular delay value is expected to occur among the arriving packets. The histogram is then used to approximate the distribution in the form of a curve.

  • Patent number: 6061354
Abstract: A concrete circuit configuration is proposed of a multiplex transmitter for loading a standard ATM cell with multiplexed micro-frames which are each shorter than the standard ATM cell. The input micro-frames are delivered to a distributor 504 in the input order through an interface 503. The distributor 504 distributes the input micro-frames using distributing information input. The distributing information accords with the service condition of each connection or micro-frame. An extracting circuit 506 selects buffers in accordance with predetermined buffer selection logic. A cell cancellation monitor circuit 508 relinquishes micro-frames exceeding cell tolerable time periods T2-1-T2-m. A multiplexing processor 507 transfers the cell or a idle cell to a sender 511 in accordance with the cell transfer timing of the sender 511.

  • Patent number: 6061341
Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating a TCP packet connection between a remote host on a first network and a mobile station on a mobile network is disclosed. The process initially involves performing a three-way handshake routine between the remote host and a gateway packet mobile switching center of the mobile network to establish the validity of a TCP packet connection request. During the handshake routine transmissions from the remote host are buffered by the gateway packet mobile switching center. A second three-way handshake routine is then carried out between the gateway packet mobile switching center and the mobile station using the buffered transmissions to complete a TCP connection between the mobile station and the remote host.

  • Patent number: 6061719
Abstract: Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) or other network information identifiers are transmitted with television signals in order to permit web content to be displayed in synchronization with television programming. In an illustrative embodiment, URLs are embedded in a closed caption portion of a transmitted television signal, and delimited from the closed caption text using predetermined delimiting characters. A decoder extracts the URLs from the television signal, and supplies the URLs to a retrieval device which automatically retrieves corresponding web pages or other similar information over a network. The retrieved web pages are then displayed to a viewer in synchronization with related programming in the television signal. The retrieval device may be a set-top box associated with a television set that displays both a retrieved web page and the corresponding television picture portion of the television signal.

  • Patent number: 6055229
Abstract: A device (124, 122) having application data to transmit collects (502) information concerning data transport capabilities affecting transmission timing of at least one wireless link available for transmitting the application data, and calculates (506), from the information, a maximum amount of data that can be completed through the at least one wireless link by a predetermined time. The device then determines (508), when attainable, from the application data and from a predetermined set of user-presentation formats possible for the application data, a user-presentation format that requires less than the maximum amount of data. The device then formats (514) the application data in accordance with the user-presentation format before transmitting the application data (530).

  • Patent number: 6046980
Abstract: In a packet communication environment, a method is provided for classifying packet network flows for use in determining a policy, or rule of assignment of a service level, and enforcing that policy by direct rate control. The method comprises applying individual instances of traffic objects, i.e., packet network flows to a classification model based on selectable information obtained from a plurality of layers of a multi-layered communication protocol, then mapping the flow to the defined traffic classes, which are arbitrarily assignable by an offline manager which creates the classification. It is useful to note that the classification need not be a complete enumeration of the possible traffic.

  • Patent number: 6044091
Abstract: A method for scheduling a plurality of cells of a call via a connection linking a multiplicity of nodes which include a source node and a destination node is provided. A frame counter which counts down the time slots of each frame to be reset to a frame size is assigned to each node of each connection. All the frame counters at all the nodes are pre-synchronized on a connection basis based on propagation delays and delay bounds so that each upstream count of the frame counter in the upstream node is previously correlated to a downstream count of the frame counter in the downstream node. So the eligible time of a cell at each node can be determined without delivering scheduling information from an upstream node to a downstream node.

  • Patent number: 6041048
Abstract: A multi-service communication system (100) includes a packet switching network (101) and a base site (108). The packet switching network supports multiple communication services, such as voice and data. A communication link (102) having a bandwidth substantially equal to an aggregate bandwidth of radio communication resources (115-116) supported by the base site is provided between the packet switching network and the base site. Attributes of a first communication service are compared and contrasted with attributes or characteristics of a second communication service with respect to the criticality of the attributes and/or characteristics. When one attribute of the first communication service is more critical than an attribute or characteristic of the second communication service, one or more of the attributes and/or characteristics of the second communication service are modified based on the critical attribute of the first communication service.

  • Patent number: 6038223
Abstract: A new access scheme for a digital radio network for providing packet data access to mobile stations operating within said network. A random access channel (ACH) is provided for control signaling and short data messages between the network and the mobile stations. One or more polling data channels (PDCHs) are provided for larger quantities of data to be sent between the mobile stations and the network. A mobile station seeking access to send data packets contacts the network over the ACH channel, registers for packet access and is assigned a unique flag pattern. The network then sequentially provides to various registered mobiles access to a PDCH channel by sending its flag pattern in a message over the downlink PDCH. When each mobile recognizes its own unique flag pattern it knows that it is then allowed to send a discrete number of packet bursts to the network over the uplink PDCH before access to the PDCH is given to another registered mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6034946
Abstract: Methods, systems and computer program products which identify network routing paths having a first performance characteristic less than a first specified limit and a second performance characteristic less than a second specified limit from a plurality of routing paths. These routing paths are identified by combining both the first performance characteristic and the second performance characteristic for one of the plurality of routing paths to provide a third performance characteristic which differs from both the first and the second performance characteristic and which operates as a proxy for the first and second performance characteristic. It is then determined if the third performance characteristic of the routing path is less than a third performance limit associated with the third performance characteristic.

  • Patent number: 6034966
Abstract: An improved transmission control method for use in a network which includes a time division multiplexing channel and a contention control channel. At least one station and a central control unit are connected both to a contention control channel and a time division multiplexing (TDMA) channel. When a station starts a time division multiplexing session, it transmits an access request to the central control unit via the contention control channel. After the central control unit receives the access request, the station which transmitted the access request is included in the order of the time division multiplexing (TDMA). The central control unit repeatedly transmits a transmission permitting token to the station via the TDMA channel in accordance with the order of the time division multiplexing.

  • Patent number: 6034961
Abstract: In an active/standby routing system for establishing an active route and the corresponding standby route in an ATM network, a node transmits, as a connection signaling message, a connection pair identifier which is unique to a combination of the active and the standby routes together with information which is indicative of either of active and standby routes. The active and the standby routes are quickly switched from one to another even when one of the routes is to be recalculated due to a trouble in the other route. The connection signaling message is transmitted to both the active and the standby routes from the first node. A repeating node receives the message, sets the route indicated by the information indicating an active or standby route in the received message and thereafter transmits the message.

  • Patent number: 6021139
Abstract: A signal processing method and apparatus are described for demultiplexing selected components (especially audio signals) from a multiplexed data stream. Each of the desired channel components has a unique identification code detected by a processor parsing the contents of a received data buffer between the disc reader and the demultiplexer. The demultiplexer is set up to output received data channel streams having a specific identification code different from any of those assigned to the channel streams originally. Prior to demultiplexing, the identification code for a desired one of the channel streams is altered by the processor to the specific identification code as it passes through the buffer in order to avoid re-setting the demultiplexer.
