  • Patent number: 6363081
Abstract: In a computer network system, data packets are transmitted to a designated network port. A port sharing protocol enables multiple applications to listen to the same port. Each interested application attempts to bind to the port. The first application to successfully bind to the port is deemed the “primary” application, and all remaining applications are deemed “secondary” applications. The secondary applications register themselves with the primary application by submitting their IP addresses and a port number of the port. The primary application adds the secondary applications to a distribution list. The primary application listens for incoming packets delivered over the port. When a packet is received, the primary application sends a copy of the packet to each secondary application on the distribution list. The primary and secondary applications are then free to consume the packets for their own purposes.

  • Patent number: 6356556
Abstract: A software-based automated DS0 channel format analysis routine resident in a U-BRITE interface card's microcontroller solves the problem of potential misconfiguration of ISDN interface circuit cards, as may result from the failure to properly set DS0 time slot option switches to their intended ISDN channel assignments. When exercised, the routine automatically determines not only what DS0 channels are available at the remote ISDN circuit card, but also the order in which those DS0 channels are multiplexed by that remote card's circuitry. As a consequence, once the routine has run to completion, each ISDN interface card will contain the same DS0 time slot multiplexing scheme—corresponding to what has been manually configured at a remote card—even if the remote card's DS0 option switches were originally incorrectly set.

  • Patent number: 6356553
Abstract: A mechanism for performing multicast packet transfer when a certain one of the destination nodes participating in the multicast communication requires resource reservation for a certain packet flow specified among the packet flows to that destination node. A system may transfer multicast packets using a plurality of virtual connections based on which flow the packets to be transferred belong to, so that each node receives the packets without duplication. Alternatively, a system may selectively discard received packets to avoid processing duplicated packets, although duplicated packets are received at each node.

  • Patent number: 6353617
Abstract: A medium access protocol which adjusts number of contention slots in a variable length frame and superimposes a variable window structure over the frame structure. The number of contention slots (24) in a frame (28, 30) is changed on a frame by frame basis by determining if a collision occurred in any contention slot (44). If not the contention slot is removed (48) and if so, the number of slots is increased (52). In high traffic situations, if the average load is greater than a threshold (107, 120) the number of frames in a window is increased (130). If the load drops below the threshold (120), the number of frames per window is decreased (124).

  • Patent number: 6351470
Abstract: The invention relates to an interworking function apparatus (IWF), a method and an arrangement for establishing a mobile-terminating call in a mobile communications network when the call is received from a calling party via a fixed network without any signalling support which provides information on the protocol employed by the calling party. In the invention, a service is assigned only one directory number, which is common to all the protocols employed by the service. The protocol identifier in a service definition linked with this directory number has a neutral (undefined) value or may be interpreted as neutral. The IWF, upon receiving the neutral RA parameter (Step 2), is switched onto the line and monitors a traffic channel received from the fixed network in order to identify the protocol employed by the calling terminal equipment (Steps 54-57). After identifying the protocol, the IWF is configured according to the identified protocol (Steps 58-60 or 61-63), and data transfer may begin (Step 64).
